I actually stop reading some posts because I can't be arsed to try and work out what is being said. Why do people put DS instead of son? What is STBX?

When you join a new group do you always try to tell the group how to change the way they do things? How has that worked out for you?

What is ODFOD its not on the list?

I got deleted once for saying odfod. It was the only word in my post so i assume it is considered to breach talk guidelines, therefore can't be on the official list of abbreviations?

Same. I was sent to sit on the Dnaughty step too. No idea how long the ban was, I thought it would as permanent tbh.

Emergency:

I've just arrived in Paris and they are ALL SPEAKING FRENCH. How dare they?

I've just started to learn to cook and they keep saying things like blend and fold and sauté and knead. How dare they?

What on earth is unreasonable about me stepping through a new friend's door and criticising the curtains?

How dare a group that's evolved its own culture have its own shorthand!

Honestly.

Why not go through the points and list how what you did is different? No acronyms required

Mine was a genuine light hearted post. What I got was many responses from very angry, unpleasant people.

STSALOPOMAA

Gold star to anyone who can work that out🙄

Well, maybe think about how you come across? Or even doing a search to see how often this comes up to check how funny you’re being?

Didn't really come across as light-hearted at all and people responded in kind for the most part

This isn’t landing the way you think it is.

Don’t you mean:

TILTWYTII

HelpMeGetThrough · 29/12/2025 13:22

And as far as abbreviations go on here, my thoughts are:

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

GKG1 · 29/12/2025 13:24

Welcome to Mn! No one likes when they don’t understand things do they, but you’ll get there if you hang about. I used to read STBXH as ‘stupid bastard ex husband’ and still do as it usually feels quite fitting

Keepingongoing · 29/12/2025 13:39

I’ve always assumed that the D as in DH etc, is often written in a spirit of irony!

Acronyms can add to the meaning OP, and make the post more punchy. For example, my favourite - ‘AIBU or CF?’ That is wonderfully short, and perfectly clear when you know the acronyms!

Frogbear · 29/12/2025 08:46

Are you new here?

Edit - ah I just spotted your username, you are new! You’ll get used to it and start doing it yourself!

Edited

You don't have to use the twattish abbreviations. I say my mum etc. Never used D anything.

SauvignonBlanche · 29/12/2025 13:57

Hi @2026newbie and welcome to MN.

I think you’ll find that TSSDNCOP.

Abbreviations drive me nuts too. I read a thread where someone was saying how hard it was to work during the pandemic lockdowns. She was a SW dealing with CP. I looked up both the abbreviations and came up with Sex Worker and Cerebral Palsy, which just about made sense in the context. It put a whole different light on the post further on when I realised she was actually a Social Worker dealing with Child Protection!

An initialism is not an acronym.

Damnloginpopup · 29/12/2025 14:26

DSD is a palindrome

RaraRachael · 29/12/2025 14:31

I've been here for years and think all the abbreviations are ridiculous. It would take me longer to type DS than it would son.

No one is angry. Very few people were unpleasant. There was nothing in your op to suggest it was light hearted.

ADHDdiagnosis · 29/12/2025 14:39

I totally agree. I’ve used these boards for many years but can never get behind the d everything. I know it’s the language here but I refuse to partake.

I can’t get on board with it at all. Particularly when a d husband is having an affair with d secretary and the d dog suspects etc

JFDIYOLO · 29/12/2025 14:42

@tostaky 😂 It's Just Fuckin' Do It - You Only Live Once!

It's my mantra now - I've been saying yes to new things, to scary things and rewarding things over the last few years since turning 60. And lost 35 pounds this year. Life's too short to think 'if only, I wish I had / hadn't...'
