Explain avocado to me

What is the point of it?

I had avocado on toast for the first time today and was distinctly underwhelmed. So many people rave about it but it tastes of nothing. I know it's considered to be good for us, healthy fats etc, but do people really love eating it or are they just pretending they do? Am I avocadoing wrong?

I bloody love avocado. On granary bread toast - mash avocado up in a bowl (got to be perfectly ripe) with a squeeze of lemon or lime juice and spread on said toast.
Yum

cupfinalchaos · 29/12/2025 01:19

Depends what you do with it. I make a wicked guacamole with lime, garlic, cumin and salt. Spread it on toast topped with an egg.

comeondover · 29/12/2025 01:36

Can't believe no one's mentioned Hass avocados. They're the ones you want, the tastiest ones. They're the toady-looking knobbly ones. The smooth ones are pointless. However you may have more luck taste-wise in their peak season ie summer

I don't get all the hype either OP. Anything which needs heaps of seasoning to make it taste of something is just a waste of time imo.

I put smaahed avocado on sourdough toast with two poached eggs and some chilli flakes. Delicious!

This is the trendy hype!

Fairyliz · 29/12/2025 07:00

I think it’s ghastly slime and very expensive for something that’s tasteless. If you then have to add protein to it, it becomes an expensive lunch.

ISeeYouHere · 29/12/2025 07:01

I’m with you, it’s just a bit mushy and meh on its own. On sourdough with poached eggs though, it takes on very tasty properties.

All this talk of avocados made me have them for breakfast!

Avocado, like tofu, is one of those things people always big up by mentioning all the things that go so well WITH it to give it taste - salt and pepper, lemon juice etc. Which is just another way of saying that yes, it basically has no taste of its own.

The point may be more to do with texture.

garlictwist · 29/12/2025 08:53

I’m currently on holiday in Chile and the avocados here are so delicious. I rarely eat them at home as they just aren’t the same - always under or over ripe.

That’s true of pretty much all salad and most plant food, isn’t it?

23Shadows · 29/12/2025 11:01

Those poached eggs are impressive @1984Winston but you're getting zero hipster points for that toast 😆

Eh, no. Have you never eaten vegetables or fruit?

True about fruit. But salads and veg take sauce or dressing. I’d say an avocado has more taste than most other salad vegetables (maybe not more than tomatoes) and many other vegetables. And more than rice or pasta.

Is it ripe? It should be soft and buttery. Have you put salt and maybe a bit of lemon on it?
If so maybe you just don’t like it? I love it.

And a bit of Tabasco always goes down a treat.

fluffiphlox · 29/12/2025 11:15

My husband loves them. I dislike them though will have a slice now and again as I know it’s good for me, but I don’t much enjoy the texture. A very divisive little blighter.

muggart · 29/12/2025 11:21

nobody likes avocado they just like salt and dressings like lemon / balsamic etc. avocado is a healthy and plain-ish conduit for salt.

I never use salad dressing, I like the taste of salad veg. If I'm eating out I ask for the dressing to be left off if possible. I get what you mean though.

Slimey green hellfruit.

ColdSpringHarbor · 29/12/2025 11:28

Of course some people like avocado. I often eat it plain, just scooping it out of the skin, but I also like it with olive oil and balsamic, or in guacamole, or in a tricolore salad or with eggs. I think a good avocado is subtle and creamy. My son hates cucumber - says it tastes of 'off water'. I think cucumber is one of the mildest and least offensive tastes around, but that's pretty bland. Lots of foods are bland but enjoyable eg cream cheese, white bread, scrambled eggs....

GKG1 · 29/12/2025 11:31

I’m sure others have said it, but to me, avocado should only be eaten sliced or cubed, never mashed, it’s rank and tasteless like that. Unless guacamole where mashing is acceptable and delicious (homemade not shop which isn’t good).

Heylittlesongbird · 29/12/2025 11:41

I like avocado but I haven’t seen it in quite the same light since I read it tastes like giving a blow job. It’s also difficult not being able to discuss with anyone in my household, none of them have the lived experience to debate whether they see this as the case or not.

I can assure you, as an aficionado of both fellatio and avocado, that there is not the slightest resemblance between them, in taste or texture.

Probably. I am a pescatarian and have a very fatty liver, so have to follow a Mediterranean diet, and avoid UPFs as much as possible. This ticks all the boxes!
