Explain avocado to me

What is the point of it?

I had avocado on toast for the first time today and was distinctly underwhelmed. So many people rave about it but it tastes of nothing. I know it's considered to be good for us, healthy fats etc, but do people really love eating it or are they just pretending they do? Am I avocadoing wrong?

Well any of those are great choices @23Shadows. I love avocado but it's fine to live an avocado free life! 😀

Yup, that's why I own my house outright, because I've avoided 🥑 thus far.

Did other fruits and vegetables get in your way ?

Well I am partial to a bit of asparagus but it doesn't seem to have held me back.

Mash it with a squeeze of lime and a twist of black pepper, add cherry tomatoes and a good drizzle of balsamic glaze. Food of the gods.
A poached egg (runny yolk) on top only adds to the joy

mutedtoo · 28/12/2025 18:34

the only way to eat avocado on toast is to first cover the bread in cream cheese, then slice so avocado and place on the bread with a helpful amount of salt and cracked black pepper. Unreal!!

I’ve had just smashed avocado on toast before, agree with OP totally underwhelming!!!

Pleased for you. You were so lucky, unlike countless other poor souls that probably got addicted at a young age.

You could be on to something there. I’ve bagged 2 houses by avoiding avocados…..we won’t dwell on my horse habit. If ever there was a waste of 💰 its that but it never seems to get a mention in the Daily Mail.

Are we talking actual 🐴 🐎 here? Just clarifying in case you're using the well known slang term for a more concerning habit.

Have you gone full hipster? Smashed on sourdough with lime juice, chilli flakes and a poached egg is pretty darn good. I still managed a mortgaged property despite eating avocado, but olives can do one.

23Shadows · 28/12/2025 19:49

@HarryVanderspeigle not full on hipster, I didn't have sourdough so had it on seeded wholemeal. The toast was the best bit. Can't see how adding an egg would help it, all too mushy for my liking. I've now accepted avocado is not for me. I'll just have to remain deeply unhip.

I like avocado. I find that the seasoning, flavours need to be mixed in and not just sprinkled on top. For some reason though I am.not mad about it on toast. Also similar to say apples it depends on the variety/type.

😂🤣its not for everyone
Whilst personally I like avocado I can see why some people dont
I also wouldnt add an egg to i cant see how that would enhance it..

Yes actual equines, although a drug habit would be cheaper. Fortunately horses are not avo fans and most equestrian venues specialise in cheesy chips rather than hipster toast.

mondaytosunday · 29/12/2025 00:15

Well I wouldn’t have just avocado on toast! Even with pepper and chilli. I have mine with an egg and bacon on a protein bagel, with tomatoes on the side.

toomuchcrapeverywhere · 29/12/2025 00:19

It’s like cold potato with butter stirred into it.

Sweetiedarling7 · 29/12/2025 00:22

I think it is like greasy cucumber. Bland.

Appalonia · 29/12/2025 00:25

They are good in chocolate brownies, makes them very moist!

Agree with you about olives tho. Yuk.

boothandbones · 29/12/2025 00:27

I like it on toast with halloumi and crispy chilli oil

Eggybreadwithnuts · 29/12/2025 00:28

I only like it in a salad with salt and lemon juice....lush with prawns. On toast...nahhhh trendy rubbish

ZenLikeAlways · 29/12/2025 00:44

Is it ripe? Did you put salt on it?

BooneyBeautiful · 29/12/2025 00:50

1984Winston · 28/12/2025 14:48

I put pepper and lemon on it, on toast with poached eggs 😁

I put smaahed avocado on sourdough toast with two poached eggs and some chilli flakes. Delicious!

BunfightBetty · 29/12/2025 01:02

Its flavour is subtle and nuanced, rather than bland, I find. But it depends quite a lot on the variety. Bobbly varieties tend to have more flavour than the smooth varieties.

It sings in a very simple, pared-back guac, whizzed up with lots of lime juice, a little very finely chopped spring onion and a generous salting.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 29/12/2025 01:04

Mix with cacao powder & dares and refrigerate -healthy chocolate pud.

Waitingfordoggo · 29/12/2025 01:07

Quincette · 28/12/2025 14:45

I love it, but it needs seasoning/adornments.

Yes, this. It has a great texture but needs other flavours with it IMO.

A not-overly ripe one sliced with tomatoes, basil, and a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic is a classic.

I also love it mashed on buttered granary toast, with some crumbled feta, coriander and sweet chilli sauce- maybe a sprinkling of mixed seeds on top- that’s one of my favourite breakfasts.

It’s like adding clotted cream to a scone with jam, clotted cream doesn’t taste of much but adds a creaminess and a texture. That’s what avocado does, it’s not a strong taste but it adds something to a dish. That’s said, it’s perfectly okay not to like it just as some people prefer not to add cream to their scones.

That's exactly it. It's kind of a vehicle for other things. The creamy texture adds to other ingredients. Sourdough toast with avocado and smoked salmon, for instance. The salmon needs something that sets it off and which provides a creamy base.
Sourdough toast with avocado with some harissa dribbled over, works well.

I agree with the pp that guacamole is generally just slimy mush, though. I don't completely mash avocado, ever. I either use it sliced, or just gently crush it while leaving lots of chunky bits. Otherwise it just turns into slime.
