Explain avocado to me

What is the point of it?

I had avocado on toast for the first time today and was distinctly underwhelmed. So many people rave about it but it tastes of nothing. I know it's considered to be good for us, healthy fats etc, but do people really love eating it or are they just pretending they do? Am I avocadoing wrong?

I love avocado and eat it multiple times a week usually, but I agree with you that I don't get the love for it on toast. I prefer it in a salad or in a sandwich where it is accompanying other foods, not the star of the show. In the 80s we used to have it with prawns and Rose Marie sauce - that was delicious. It goes well with smoked salmon, chicken or some cheeses, eg Brie imo.

It's ok not to like it. I didn't used to, but now I do. On the other hand I try lentils once in awhile and still hate them. I dont think disliking a food is a moral failing.

Its worse than that. You have to like and dislike the right foods to be morally superior and 'on the right side of history'

If you like white bread, biege food, fried food, heavy carby stodgy food, instant coffee, mild cheddar. You're just a plain wrongun

If you dont like avocado, sourdough, olives, naice ham, 'good' coffee, spicy foods, crunchy cheddar and barrel aged feta, home made foods. You're also a plain wrongun.

I like all of the above. Split personality unfortunately.

Delicious with seafood, like prawns, salmon, tuna and lemony dressing or mayonnaise with some lemon.

I like all of those. And posh food. And junk food.

But then I’m a fat glutton.

soupyspoon · 28/12/2025 15:13

Yes I like posh food and junk food on the same plate!!!

chisping · 28/12/2025 15:16

I had an avocado salad on holiday and it was delicious. However my digestive system disagreed.

I like it all too, basically, I like food.

MildlyAnnoyed · 28/12/2025 15:18

It tastes like grass to me. I don’t get the hype either!

GameOfJones · 28/12/2025 15:33

I absolutely love it but it doesn't have much of a taste on its own. I just like the creamy blandness of it as a vehicle for chilli flakes/salt/lime juice/coriander etc. It's a bit like cottage cheese or cream cheese for me. It doesn't taste of much on its own but there's something comforting about it and you can customise it with lots of different toppings.

I don't like sweet food for breakfast and I try to limit my meat consumption so avocado toast is a go-to meal for me.

figud · 28/12/2025 16:17

Lovely on toasted bagel with a little honey and chilli flakes.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 28/12/2025 16:21

It’s also nice blended with yoghurt, honey and cinnamon.

intrepidpanda · 28/12/2025 16:26

Did you get the toast and avocado in a cafe. It can vary a lot from soft creamy holding its shape to mushy salty pile of yuck.

Skeletor1980 · 28/12/2025 16:30

M&S large Atlantic (not tiger) prawns, smoked salmon, cress, poached egg and an avocado. Delicious breakfast.

stealthninjamum · 28/12/2025 16:31

I love avocado on bread with salt and pepper or chilli or lemon or lime or in a salad . One thing I have noticed is lots of shops selling hass avocados which don’t seem as nice as normal avocados but I’m not sure when it became possible to buy hass avocados.

gogomomo2 · 28/12/2025 16:32

It’s very tasty, but I add salt, lime and chilli too. Needs to be ripe

MilkyNoway · 28/12/2025 16:34

I absolutely love avacado and Im a povvo on PIP so definitely not pretending to look fancy🤣
I just mush it up with corse pink salt, black pepper and chilli flakes and have it on seeded toast.

Yeah I'm not a fan of olives either. Don't see the point of them.

Fun Love GIF by Andrew torralvo

Ok OP @23Shadows this is MM where will part virtual was. I like olives and I love avocados. On toast, in salads, in tacos, with nachos, as a dip in summer with a BBQ.

They make a fantastic deep conditioner base for my afro hair.

Rubbing the avocado skin on my face (fruit side down) is very moisturising.

I love avocados.

TheFormidableMrsC · 28/12/2025 16:58

I buy Aldi’s spicy smashed avocado in a pot. It’s delicious.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 28/12/2025 17:05

I love avocado on its own with nothing added to it as it tastes creamy, nutty & just yummy!

ocolo · 28/12/2025 17:08

Any type will do me as i hardly taste it. I put it in my fruit blend and put the mix on my porridge!

butterdish93 · 28/12/2025 17:09

Salt, pepper, lemon juice. Maybe some king prawns and a bit of humous! Delish

Didntask · 28/12/2025 17:10

I love them. Plenty of salt and chilli flakes, or Everything but the Bagel seasoning on some oat crackers or a rice cake is one of my favourite snacks.

tobee · 28/12/2025 17:10

Tell us something that you eat. Do you actually like it or are you just pretending?

Tiredofwhataboutery · 28/12/2025 17:13

I like avocados but would agree it’s an ingredient rather than the star. Thick slice of toast, salted butter, avocado, salt , pepper, chilli. It reminds me a bit of a mozzarella ball, bland on its own but on a bit of nice crusty bread with pesto, fresh tomatoes, salt and pepper and it’s lovely.

Sunshineandoranges · 28/12/2025 17:14

Is there any particularly nice variety? I used to like them but lately they have been tasteless. Perhaps they are seasonal or better from some countries?
