Explain avocado to me

What is the point of it?

I had avocado on toast for the first time today and was distinctly underwhelmed. So many people rave about it but it tastes of nothing. I know it's considered to be good for us, healthy fats etc, but do people really love eating it or are they just pretending they do? Am I avocadoing wrong?

It takes a few tries. Also put with an egg . Mnmmmmm egg!!!

OttersMayHaveShifted · 28/12/2025 17:16

You're not 'doing it wrong'. t's ok not to like it. As for blandness - there are lots of foods which are popular but not strong-tasting.

landlordhell · 28/12/2025 17:19

I love its green, fresh, creaminess on toasted sourdough. I then like some salt and chilli flakes on top. Yum. It’s a textural thing and its cool creaminess goes well with salt/ lemon/ chilli etc.

You’ve waited to long to try them and the hype from Big Avocado has raised your expectations to an unrealistic level.

If I had never tried avocado, I’d be convinced they were the best food on the planet going by how their fans describe them.

And nothing can live up to that particular fandom. Nothing.

ManyPigeons · 28/12/2025 17:21

It doesn’t taste of nothing to other people I suppose is the answer. To me it tastes nutty and creamy.

Remember that people have different tasting abilities - if you’re older (usually over 65ish), a smoker, an ex smoker, from a culture where spicy food is the norm (making strong flavours preferred), taking medication then you may not taste things like avocado as clearly as others.

It tastes like grass to me. I don’t get the hype either!

What hype? I’ve been eating them since the 80s.

billiongulls · 28/12/2025 17:24

I love it, but not on its own. With cheese preferably, but also egg, salad, chickpeas etc. And chili.

Livpool · 28/12/2025 17:25

I can’t stand it - it tastes of nothing but has a creamy texture 🤮

whatsupwithmyhead · 28/12/2025 17:26

I bloody love avocados but farming them has pretty horrible environmental impacts so if you aren’t keen just avoid them and you can feel morally righteous.

Tell us something that you eat. Do you actually like it or are you just pretending?

I like lots of things. As I was eating it I was thinking I'd rather have marmite on toast. Or peanut butter.

See I love an avocado. Firstly its great with eggs or salmon or just on its own as a pseudo carb for a meal.

Secondly, having battled with ibs for decades, its the one thing that helps my gut. I know if I've skipped a daily avocado.

23Shadows · 28/12/2025 17:33

Or cheese with worcester sauce.

Or even better, a cheese and ham toastie.

landlordhell · 28/12/2025 17:34

Did you season it with freshly cracked black pepper and salt?

Yes, plenty of it.

Did you get the toast and avocado in a cafe. It can vary a lot from soft creamy holding its shape to mushy salty pile of yuck.

Sorry, missed your question earlier. No, not in a café, did it myself at home.

SwanNecked · 28/12/2025 17:37

We had it for breakfast. Smashed up with a little bit of feta, chopped fresh chillies, salt, pepper and a drop of good olive oil, on good sourdough toast. Delicious.

NormasArse · 28/12/2025 17:39

Just about to eat some! 😁

It’s like adding clotted cream to a scone with jam, clotted cream doesn’t taste of much but adds a creaminess and a texture. That’s what avocado does, it’s not a strong taste but it adds something to a dish. That’s said, it’s perfectly okay not to like it just as some people prefer not to add cream to their scones.

exactly. I think Mozzarella is the same.

Yeah I'm not a fan of olives either. Don't see the point of them.

the point of olives is the same as the point of any food 😶

I know, but they're just a bit pointless to me, they don't add anything to a dish and don't taste particularly nice on their own. I don't hate them, just wouldn't go out of my way to eat one.

Yes, this is just my opinion, other opinions are just as valid!

They add a nice pop of sour saltiness, to something sweet or creamy or hot.

cantbearsed247 · 28/12/2025 18:14

I love avocado! Olives on the other hand are absolutely vile.

FancyCatSlave · 28/12/2025 18:21

I have tried to like it but I don’t. I actively dislike the texture.

They’re unethical anyway, apparently peas on toast is the latest thing. I’d probably prefer that.

Joeninety · 28/12/2025 18:25

Apparently it's possibly the main reason that our younger generation can't get on the housing ladder. I find this very hard to believe. What about other fruits and vegetables ?

Yup, that's why I own my house outright, because I've avoided 🥑 thus far.
