Explain avocado to me

What is the point of it?

I had avocado on toast for the first time today and was distinctly underwhelmed. So many people rave about it but it tastes of nothing. I know it's considered to be good for us, healthy fats etc, but do people really love eating it or are they just pretending they do? Am I avocadoing wrong?

My father makes a pasta with a chicken, onion and avocado sauce all loosened up with cream and lots of black pepper. It's pretty amazing IMO. I know people say avocado goes bitter if cooked, but if it basically just warmed through it seems to be okay. It's very much an art to get that timing right though!!

FWIW I hated avocado until I suddenly had a taste-bud change in my mid-twenties. At the same time I found a love for pumpkin and cold gefilte fish in aspic, which is definitely an acquired taste.

I do really like avocado but it needs to be eaten with things IMO - it's too bland on its own.

A poached/fried egg and some bacon usually livens it up or have it in chilli or something like that.

Sourdough toast, I personally butter it slightly, add mashed avocado, salt, ground black pepper, squeeze of fresh lemon juice and olive oil drizzled over. If its lunch, a sprinkle of crushed dried chillis! Much nicer than plain!

That's pretty much what I did yesterday minus the olive oil. Tasteless.

I like it the old fashioned way, halved, with vinaigrette dressing.

The only trouble with avocados is, that once they’re properly ripe you do need to eat them asap.
As some birthday card I once sent said, ‘One day older only matters if you’re an avocado.’

blackheartsgirl · 29/12/2025 16:24

I hate it smashed, the texture is bleurgh and it tastes different. I do like it sliced though and slightly unripe, also nice with lemon and garlic and black pepper

A delicate balance between the living warmth of the spirit... and... the bitter virtues... of fruits ripened under the tropical sun, voilà, that is Avocado ."

Seasalt, chilli flakes, drizzle of olive oil, nice bread.

Sometimes you just get a disappointing avocado tho!

ZenLikeAlways · 29/12/2025 22:15

Toast with butter, marmite and avocado on top is my absolute favourite!

ZenLikeAlways · 29/12/2025 22:16

It’s also delicious with mexican food and fish and chips and feta cheese… bloody love it I do!!!

I have tried to like it but I don’t. I actively dislike the texture.

They’re unethical anyway, apparently peas on toast is the latest thing. I’d probably prefer that.

What kind of peas?

Probably a pea purée. I make my own mushy peas which would have a similar spreading consistency. I use frozen petit pois . I defrost and whizz up with some yoghurt, olive oil, garlic clove and salt and pepper. I sometimes add
mint- fresh or a tsp of mint sauce. Delicious. You can add edamame ( I get frozen) for extra protein.

OP if you don’t like it, don’t eat it 🤷🏻‍♀️
Lots of people love oysters. To me they taste like salty snot with whatever flavourings or engancements you add. Not eating them really doesn’t bother me.

It needs to be ripe and seasoned. As is the case with other fruit, you get good ones and bad ones. I find I need to put a fair bit of salt on it. Chilli flakes are nice too.
