Explain avocado to me

What is the point of it?

I had avocado on toast for the first time today and was distinctly underwhelmed. So many people rave about it but it tastes of nothing. I know it's considered to be good for us, healthy fats etc, but do people really love eating it or are they just pretending they do? Am I avocadoing wrong?

Is it ripe? It should be soft and buttery. Have you put salt and maybe a bit of lemon on it?
If so maybe you just don’t like it? I love it.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 28/12/2025 14:42

It's ok not to like it. I didn't used to, but now I do. On the other hand I try lentils once in awhile and still hate them. I dont think disliking a food is a moral failing.

It has a lovely flavour if you get a good ripe one! I love the gem avocados.

I have on toast occasionally, on fajitas and tacos often and as an ingredient in wraps and sandwiches too. Fab as guac!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 28/12/2025 14:44

Add black pepper and squeeze of lemon juice and it’s nicer.

Buffypaws · 28/12/2025 14:45

I have sriracha on it

Quincette · 28/12/2025 14:45

I love it, but it needs seasoning/adornments.

Don’t mention that word as there are some delicious crisps with that in.

BillieWiper · 28/12/2025 14:48

To me it's almost like butter but with a vegetable taste. It's so creamy and bland. I do find it a bit ick sometimes. It goes brown so easily. And that stuff you get from the supermarket calling itself guacamole should be ashamed of itself. Just tasteless green slime.

It needs something crunchy and salty with it. Crispy bacon, crispy roast meat or potatoes, chilli flakes, lots of salt. Something to contrast that smooth nothingyness about it.

I also hate it with eggs as it's too mushy and wet tasting.

1984Winston · 28/12/2025 14:48

I put pepper and lemon on it, on toast with poached eggs 😁

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 28/12/2025 14:49

Try on toast and stick an egg on top (fried, poached or boiled). Sprinkle sea salt, garlic granules or black pepper on it and have marmalade/relish on the side

Same. I think naked avocado wouldn’t taste as nice.

eurotravel · 28/12/2025 14:51

Only tasty when soft & ripe

23Shadows · 28/12/2025 14:51

Yes it was ripe. I gave it plenty salt & pepper, squeeze of lemon juice and a sprinkling of chilli flakes but it's just so bland. I guess it's better when mixed with other things then.

I like avocados. They’re very nice when properly ripe and dressed with oil and vinegar.

But what I like even more is that a first reply on an MN thread about avocados can get deleted for ‘breaking talk guidelines’! How fighty do you have to be to get deleted in a discussion about avocados!

Good old MN posters, never short of a reason to let fly.

PersephonePomegranate · 28/12/2025 14:52

I love it! Some black pepper or chilli flakes pep it up a bit if you find it too plain.

Clockyclockz · 28/12/2025 14:52

Needs to be on crusty toast with butter. Add lemon juice & chilli powder to a ripe avocado. Delicious & filing but people like different things.

DeanElderberry · 28/12/2025 14:53

One of the may ways it is delicious is spread on toast with a LOT of marmite (and a poached egg).

MolkosTeenageAngst · 28/12/2025 14:56

It’s like adding clotted cream to a scone with jam, clotted cream doesn’t taste of much but adds a creaminess and a texture. That’s what avocado does, it’s not a strong taste but it adds something to a dish. That’s said, it’s perfectly okay not to like it just as some people prefer not to add cream to their scones.

I was wondering that as well. It was deleted so quickly it must have been pretty bad! Someone took offence to my lack of appreciation for 🥑 😆

I love avocado, mashed with lime and some chilli and salt and spread on a bagel.
Or sliced in a salad.
Or guacamole (not shop bought).
It does need to be ripe though, and I don’t like them when they get bruised and squishy.

Yeah I'm not a fan of olives either. Don't see the point of them.
