Or is it too soon?

and I don’t mean modern (Dec 1st to 31st) vs traditional (Christmas Eve to 12th night) - I mean if you want to spend Christmas Day taking down the tree and decorations then you can’t like it much!

blueumbrella2016 · 25/12/2025 17:16

I have a Xmas tree phobia so don't have one so not an issue for me.

But if I did have one I would keep it til Twelfth Night as that's traditional.

Newbutoldfather · 25/12/2025 17:18

Real tree.

Goes up mid December, comes down first Saturday after New Year (roughly 12 day).

With water in the stand, it lasts about three weeks without shedding much.

Why would anyone take the tree down ahead of New Year?!

Why the hell would you do that? So miserable. I don't have a tree because I have nowhere to put one at the moment.but I do have strings of lights and lanterns.⁹

BiffandChip2 · 25/12/2025 17:19

I always do Boxing Day or the 27th! Nice to reset!

couldthisbe2501 · 25/12/2025 17:21

Well, no, because I didn’t put them up in November rendering me bored with them, it’s still Christmas and why on earth would I spend my Christmas Day evening taking decorations down when I could be spending time with my family?!

We haven’t put one up this year, but it’s supposed to come down by the 5th January (Twelfth night). Seems pointless to put one up for it to come down on the 1st Day of Christmas.

There isn’t a rule and different people follow different traditions within their own family. There isn’t a right or wrong.

This is interesting.

I much, much prefer the idea of the 12 days of Christmas and Christmas Day being the start of the festivities. Im not religious though so have never really been around people who view it this way, does it tend to be quite devout Christians who do it this way?

I have young kids so unfortunately we get dragged into a lot of festivities all through December, putting us more in the second camp.

But either way, taking the tree down on Christmas Day is absurd and very much indicates that you put it up far too soon.

We put ours up on Saturday and that felt early - house full of atheists - usually take it down on 6th January but sometimes earlier. I worked until 6pm on 23rd and was bone tired when I got home, I couldn't muster much interest in Christmas until we cracked open the Bailey's and wrapped the presents after dinner on that day.

My parents are religious and put theirs up earlier than us, and trees in their church.

Christmas trees aren't a Christian tradition though any more than fairy lights are! I don't think religiosity and how early/ late a person decorates are directly connected.

ShitShowCoordinator · 25/12/2025 17:24

Mine comes down tomorrow. I take it down without fail, every boxing day. I don't like the mess.

Poodlelove · 25/12/2025 17:28

Tomorrow i am , this evening I am putting room decorations away and clutter .

RosesAndHellebores · 25/12/2025 17:29

Absolutely not. It went up last weekend and will come down on 2nd January to be taken back to JL on 3rd Jan. Beautiful tree - the integrated bastard lights didn't work. Had to rummage in the gge to find the old lights.

CoastalGrey · 25/12/2025 17:29

I usually take mine down before New Year but if I was spending Xmas Day doing it I’d be having a pretty rubbish day, there are so many nicer things to do!

Iloveyoubut · 25/12/2025 17:30

I didn’t put one up this year, but if I had I woulsnt take it down on the actual day it was put up for 😂 I am a bit ‘right, that’s that then’ though, so I’d be side-eyeing it on Boxing Day and it’d be down on the 27th.

Bookaholic73 · 25/12/2025 17:30

Mine comes down on the 26th normally. But the new tree I bought this year looks so nice that I might leave it up a little longer.

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 25/12/2025 17:30

Doing mine Saturday morning. I have been tempted to do it today but resisting.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 25/12/2025 17:32

My DM has always been very strict on the tree coming down on 6th January, not before or after (unless she was going to be away). I stick with that, especially because that is also Nollaig na mBan (women's Christmas) so all the work falls to DH. Grin

Growlybear83 · 25/12/2025 17:41

I put my tree up a couple of days ago and will be taking it down on twelfth night.

Lastfroginthebox · 25/12/2025 17:42

I only put it up two days ago, so yes - it's too soon for me. However, I'll probably be bored of it after a week.

ReignOfError · 25/12/2025 17:51

Put mine up last weekend, and will take it down on Sunday 4th. I’m away for a few days before New Year, but it’s nice to come back to the tree.

NoraLuka · 25/12/2025 17:56

Ours only went up yesterday! It’s staying put until the New Year at least.

Hairymaryfairy · 25/12/2025 17:59

Mine only went up this morning cause the kids don't like the tree it really upsets my 8 year old with ASD.
So it goes up Xmas morning and comes down in the evening.
We have other decorations that's stay up but the tree has too go.
This year my 3 year old has decided the tree is monster because it upset his brother.

frozendaisy · 25/12/2025 17:59

oh my lord no
it’s so pretty this year branches have fluffed out (it’s a real tree)
keeping until 5th

it’s only been fully decorated 3 days

This is just rage bait.

This. Controverialist bullshit.

Anyway Happy Christmas.

Zanatdy · 25/12/2025 18:02

Never on Christmas day. I wait until new years day usually.

JetSkiRental · 25/12/2025 18:02

Absolutely not. I will be resting into and enjoying the whole 12 days of Christmas thanks. Post Christmas blues are not December business.
