Tree on 6th of January. Lights up till Candlemas 2nd February

In Sweden they leave lights up to cheer passers by in the longest coldest month. I like this idea.

I find it a bit sad when people take their decorations down much before 12th night. People argue that it doesn't affect me, but it's a bit like having someone bustling about clearing the table while you're halfway through your meal, or going to an evening party in which half the guests leave after an hour. Perhaps these party guests turned up at 3pm, and drank wine and watched TV whilst the host had a shower and did her hair and make-up? So by 8pm, they're ready to call it a night.

Why does it bother you what someone does with decorations in their own home?

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 26/12/2025 22:19

It's a bit obvious when people take the trees down from inside their living room windows and stick them outside by the bins, and people with outside lights are up ladders in their front gardens taking them all down.

Do people not have anything better to do with their Christmas Day night. If it’s not your thing, why bother in the first place

Mine only went up this morning cause the kids don't like the tree it really upsets my 8 year old with ASD.
So it goes up Xmas morning and comes down in the evening.
We have other decorations that's stay up but the tree has too go.
This year my 3 year old has decided the tree is monster because it upset his brother.

Interesting, I'm an adult with (mild) ASD and I don't like Christmas trees either. I wonder if it's a feature and not just my own personal weirdness.

MeandT · 27/12/2025 01:08

Tesco did. Says a lot about the 'value' of Christmas being all wrapped up in the commercialism of it if you're prepared to take it down on Christmas Day itself (or Eve, as per Tesco!)

Not withstanding those with family members with a low tolerance for them due to medical conditions, tbf.

SuchiRolls · 27/12/2025 01:36

You put up and take down your tree and decs whenever suits you. Or not at all if that suits you too 😂 I don’t get all this, “it’s meant to be up until…” rubbish. Who says? Mine was down today and all the other peripherals. My children are all ND and as far as they’re concerned Christmas is done. Not in a miserable way, they’re happy and playing with their gifts etc, but the extra busy-ness we all find a bit overwhelming. Do whatever suits you I say.

Jumpers4goalposts · 27/12/2025 06:58

I bet you’re loads of fun lol

Sartre · 27/12/2025 08:16

I noticed a few people’s decorations were already down yesterday which made me feel a bit sad. I usually wait until New Year’s Day.

Why does it make your feel sad that another family is taking down their own decorations? No one is forcing them - it’s their choice.

Sczood · 27/12/2025 10:08

Wow never heard of that before on actual
Christmas Day, I’m considering taking ours down today as we’ve got an engineer visit appointment booked in a few days so right where the tree is near but thought is it still to early but reading this post it seems ok (ish) 😊

RampantIvy · 27/12/2025 11:19

Neither have I. I haven't got the energy to start dismantling our tree and decorations after a day of over indulgence. We don't put up our tree too early anyway.

Because it's about celebrating together as a community? It's better than a load of individuals just doing their own thing. To celebrate as a community we need to have some consensus as to when the festivals start and end.

It’s a holiday - everyone has their own traditions and beliefs - there are no rules by which individuals must follow. How would you decide which way was right or wrong?

TeideHeart · 27/12/2025 14:03

I took everything down on Boxing Day, and it was all packed away by bedtime.

I also blitzed the living room, hung some pictures, and did a bit of furniture rearranging.

That's my tradition, and you must all follow it otherwise I'll be sad! 😝

NeedWineNow · 27/12/2025 14:14

Our tree and decorations go up around the first or second weekend in December and we usually leave them up until 12th night. We're going away for a week on 5 January however so ours will come down either New Year's Day (depending on hangovers!) or 2 January. We're visiting my mum next weekend and then we're packing so DH and I agreed that we would take everything down and put away before we started getting the cases out etc. I might leave the lights on the mantlepiece though, as they give a nice glow.

I have to say that I don't know whether it's because we are going away but I'm ready for everything to come down and be out away now, and I'm quite relieved that we're not leaving them up for another week and a bit.

neighboursmustliveon · 27/12/2025 14:48

For us the Christmas season doesn’t end until at least New Year’s Day and been enjoyed and celebrated. Our will come down on the 3rd or 4th. We get back on the 2nd so DH will probably start taking them down when we get home, depending how tired he is. I will procrastinate as long as I am able to 😂

Ours go up mid November so please stop with the idea that people who put them up early take them down early as it really isn’t true!

MoChan · 27/12/2025 17:54

Nah, keeping mine up until candlemas.

Owlmoonstar · 27/12/2025 19:46

Ours are all away. I like my mine down by NYE.

Did it today. Busy tonight. Busy tomorrow. Husband working Monday and Tuesday. So today was the day.

I will say, it felt nice. The sun was shining bright, having a good spring clean, I felt warm inside looking forward to the new year.

Owlmoonstar · 27/12/2025 19:47

Oh I will say, I'm still eating cheese and chocolate like a Xmas pig. And wine. Hiccup.

Sczood · 28/12/2025 20:28

After my post mines STILL up 🤣 I am back to work tomorrow but need to take down soon as possible I may take down after work tomorrow.
