My 15 yr old is sleeping outside....

... in a hammock tonight 😂

He can't decide whether to hang his stocking up next to his hammock or leave it in his room. He'd bloody better choose his room as Father Christmas doesn't fancy trekking down to the end of the garden to deliver gifts.

(He isn't alone, his dad is out there with him in his own hammock, the pair of mad bastards Xmas Grin )

Best of luck to them. I wonder will they manage all night?

Moonlightfrog · 24/12/2025 20:17

This sounds amazing, it will probably be memorable than any expensive Xmas gift, he will forever remember the Xmas Eve he slept outside with his dad. I hope they do t get too chilly………and the stocking should definitely go indoors.

I could understand regular camping because you can add layers of insulation below and above you, but a hammock is just encircled by cold air. Are they adding insulation layers to the hammock?

Good for them, what a great memory/tradition - typed tucked up in bed with a warm duvet!

MannersAreAll · 24/12/2025 20:31

Absolutely fair play to your DH for going along with it.

I camped out, with my grandad, on Boxing Day once as I wanted a special birthday that didn't involve anything Christmassy. It's one of my most treasured memories - your son will never forget this

Beamur · 24/12/2025 20:32

With the right gear Winter camping is great.
Actually think this is super sweet.

BabyHairs · 24/12/2025 20:32

I thought we were mad doing this with 3 and 4 year olds in the summer, even in tents! Massive respect to your husband because mine would have turned into an ice cube, gear or not.

Pedallleur · 24/12/2025 20:36

There was a teenager a couple of years ago who camped out in the garden for a year. Anyway fantastic they are doing it. Hope they have a great time. Next time it will probably be a campsite with a 🔥

They've got underquilts for this exact reason - you attach them underneath the hammock so you aren't compressing the insulation with your weight. They really do have all the right gear, they just haven't actually tested it in December before! DP has been wild camping in October and February but on his own, not with DS.

Thank you for posting this op, I’m feeling so low tonight but this has made me smile. They will make amazing memories ❤️ enjoy your warm bed! X

Oh that's cool. Well, I hope it is a successful test run!

I think this is absolutely bloody brilliant, and I'd have loved this at that age!

Illbethereinaminute · 24/12/2025 20:58

Rather them than me but I hate camping even in summer!

How do you even sleep in a hammock though?! Can you turn over easily? I'm a massive fidget when it comes to falling asleep so I can't imagine a hammock being suitable for my thrashing..

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 24/12/2025 21:02

If they're reasonably warm, I'd enjoy the peace if I were you 🤫🤐🙋‍♀️

Nope, DS just decided when he got the hammock for his birthday (back in June when it was hot) that he wanted to sleep outside in it on Christmas Eve. They're both seasoned campers and have all the right gear for it but I'm still a bit WTF. I'm quite happy inside with my bottle of Dirty Cow and a film...

Leave them to it, I think it funny. They are having a laugh and if I were you I wouldn’t worry at all.

Better than cold ground in many ways. The hammocks have different layers as well for insulation. Plus sleeping bag etc. they’ll be lovely & toast

escrimbo · 24/12/2025 21:05

Fair play to them😁

Ladymuckypuddle · 24/12/2025 21:06

itsgettingweird · 24/12/2025 21:25

Well if it’s windy there as it is here central south cpast England they’ll get rocked to sleep nicely 🤣🎄

GreyCarpet · 24/12/2025 21:28

I love this!

What a great memory for them both ❤️

CapybarasAreJustGuineaBigs · 24/12/2025 21:33

Well they're out, I've had some hammock selfies and been told they're very cosy!

Ladymuckypuddle · 24/12/2025 21:36

You should take them out a tray of hot chocolate and snacks. Do they have a fire going?

Magic moments for them both 💖

MrsofClaus · 24/12/2025 21:41

Sounds fab. I'm in my 50s and have camped in a tent in February. It's good if you have the right gear.
