My 15 yr old is sleeping outside....

... in a hammock tonight 😂

He can't decide whether to hang his stocking up next to his hammock or leave it in his room. He'd bloody better choose his room as Father Christmas doesn't fancy trekking down to the end of the garden to deliver gifts.

(He isn't alone, his dad is out there with him in his own hammock, the pair of mad bastards Xmas Grin )

Wonderful. I did a December sleeper sleep out with mine a few years ago. They did it to raise money for shelter.

So glad your ds has had a great time out with his dad.

IsThisTheWaytoSlamMyPillow · 25/12/2025 08:50

Thanks for the update and good on him! Have a lovely Christmas ☺️

MeNotMyselfAndI · 25/12/2025 08:51

What a fabulous Christmas memory for all of you! My teens still love Christmas - not that they’re mad enough to sleep outside 😀🎄. Merry Christmas to you!

Your son sounds a fabulous lad. My 14 year old would love to do this. To be honest so would if I had the proper kit. Rural Scotland here and the dark skies with the stars and the milky way blow me away.

On the family film traditions, he sat on the sofa with me and watched mesmerised by The Snowman as he has done every year.

Merry Christmas. I hope your DH thaws out quickly. What a wonderful memory.

Funnywonder · 25/12/2025 09:06

Aw, just read this now. What a fabulous thread. Cheered me up no end. Your DS is obviously finding new and inventive ways to enjoy Christmas as a teenager instead of being a churlish so and so (like mine🤣) Have a lovely day.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/12/2025 09:18

Lovely lovely thread
I thought from the title it was a 15yo sleeping out in the porch because he'd come home pissed and crashed out .

I bet they chatted till their voices pegged out !

I could understand regular camping because you can add layers of insulation below and above you, but a hammock is just encircled by cold air. Are they adding insulation layers to the hammock?

What are you talking about? Most cold comes from the ground.

Natsku · 25/12/2025 09:26

Ah that's lovely, glad they both slept well out there and sounds like the start of a Christmas tradition!
I like the idea of sleeping in a hammock but when its warm enough to do it where I am it doesn't get dark enough for me to sleep, and when its dark at night I am absolutely sure it would be too cold for me! My kids have done winter camping with Scouts but they sleep in a big tent with a wood burning stove so its very cosy and warm.

katepilar · 25/12/2025 09:27

I think its lovely for the two of them :)

perenniallymessy · 25/12/2025 09:37

That sounds so fun! DS2 is in Scouts and they have built dens and hammocks and slept in them but only as late as September. At their summer camp they ended up just sleeping on a tarp in the middle of the field.

I hope they slept well enough not to be grumpy today. Merry Christmas.

Rosecoffeecup · 25/12/2025 10:03

How lovely. Hope you have a wonderful day

This has made my morning reading this 😂😂

This is definitely the ultimate Christmas thread! How lovely to read xx

ClairDeLaLune · 25/12/2025 10:20

Love this OP! So nice that your DS still likes to do crazy things with his Dad. Very heart-warming, Happy Christmas to you all!

ClaraLane · 25/12/2025 10:29

What a lovely thread OP - properly made me smile this morning!

BiddyPopthe2nd · 25/12/2025 10:33

Last year (last day!) of being a teen DD has just grumbled that Santa didn’t leave her stocking by the fire “as normal” and that it wasn’t there at 6 when she got up momentarily.

But she had only indicated an interest in still having a stocking at midnight last night…and she’s currently sleeping in that room (as she can’t get upstairs, we hope temporarily - a neurological thing). Her actual stocking is in with all the Christmas Dec’s that didn’t come home from storage unit a few miles away).

She was making smart arse comments, but in that “I’m so happy you still do this” way as she opened the bag of small bits that was in the (traditional place of the) sitting room when she woke up 🤶

Glad your DS enjoyed himself too!

Lemonyyy · 25/12/2025 10:37

Guinea bigs! I love you already op!

As far as the hammock goes, absolute nutters, but my dad and husband think it’s a great idea. They might have been inspired for next year 😂🤦‍♀️

SerendipityJane · 25/12/2025 11:29

I saw the thread title, and wondered it if was some form of charity event.

firstofallimadelight · 25/12/2025 11:36

That’s so lovely op Merry Christmas 🎄

grannyjacob · 25/12/2025 12:15

I doubt there will be a better thread than this one today, it’s so heart warming to read, absolutely love it ❤️ Merry Christmas everyone x

No way I would have let my kids sleep outside, especially with it being minus 3C, with a windchill minus 6C like it was last night. I don't care how much they are 'wrapped up..'
They weren't locked out he could have gone inside if it had stopped being fun.

The night sky is beautiful on a winters night in Wales ⭐

To be fair, the night sky is beautiful and clear (and you can see the milky way, as the OP said she could,) pretty much anywhere in the world where there's very little artificial lighting. Including plenty of places in the UK.

We have beautiful skies in the rural area we live in, in England. (20 miles from the closest city, 3 miles from the nearest main A or B road.) And it depends where you are in Wales too. Not all parts would have clear skies as some places have artificial lighting.

He was properly kitted out with the right winter gear and about 90 seconds minutes walk from the house and a warm bed - seemed like a good way of trying something out tbh, he could've changed his mind at any time and come inside! I don't really bother forbidding teenagers from anything that isn't outright life-threatening or antisocial, and this was neither.

Totally with you OP on not banning teenagers from things like this! Sounds like a fantastic way to wake up on Christmas morning

JFDIYOLO · 25/12/2025 13:26

This is lovely. When did his dad come in?

About 7.45, muttering about his hammock being a bit wonky and asking for very strong coffee 😂
