or perhaps most people like to get their news from official sources not unknown posters on mn.

But those people wouldn’t come onto the thread and start posting that it could be a murder-suicide, would they? Because they’d be waiting for news from official sources rather than speculating about something they’ve quite literally just made up.

One poster has ignored every comment and the news reports and decided to write that it’s probably murder-suicide, which is a disgusting slur against these two victims of domestic abuse and murder by their own son.

Notonthestairs · 15/12/2025 08:35

Their poor daughter.
I rewatched Sleepless in Seattle recently and enjoyed RR’s onscreen chats with Tom Hanks. The Princess Bride & When Harry Met Sally are just great films.

and well said CautiousLurker.

Kubricklayer · 15/12/2025 08:35

Sad news.

His earlier movies were brilliant. Everything after a few good men was largely forgettable, but his turn as Leo's dad in Wolf of Wall Street was scene stealing!

sittingonabeach · 15/12/2025 08:37

The first news report I read on BBC said there was no person of interest. No mention of the son. So I assumed murder/suicide. Obviously more news has come out now

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/12/2025 08:38

Very sad indeed

Yes that was what I saw and was my first thought. Some people just like to argue for the sake of it.

CraftandGlamour · 15/12/2025 08:50

I'm so shocked to read this. That the creative genius, behind so many funny, emotionally smart, joyful films has, along with his wife, be brutally murdered by their own child is just grotesque.

I was just saying to dh, if you’re wealthy and successful, don’t have children. The percentage of famous people’s dcs who are sadly mad or bad far exceeds the norm.

Or maybe ordinary people tragically killed by their children don’t make the world’s headlines?

Murder suicide is the most likely scenario (alongside carbon monoxide poisoning) when a couple die like this. Just because it doesn’t seem to be the case here, doesn’t mean it’s an unreasonable thing for people to have speculated, particularly when the police/ bbc etc aren’t reporting about the son yet.

Holluschickie · 15/12/2025 04:18

That's just terrible. Hollywood often turns out to be so destructive.

The thing is, that Rob Reiner himself was a "son of Hollywood". His father, Carl, was a very famous and successful comedian, actor, etc.

This is so utterly tragic 😩

The first news reports said two people found dead, both brutally stabbed. A person committing suicide by brutally stabbing themself seems highly unlikely.

It was reported as brutally stabbed/multiple stab wounds/suspected homicide. Nothing about the initial reporting seemed like a murder-suicide. And by the time that poster commented, it was widely reported to be their son. So why would anyone post that? Why speculate something so awful without any sort of indication of it, and when news reports suggest something very much different and a number of sources have reported the name of the killer?

When I first saw the headline on deadline a few hours ago that they were dead - 'Rob Reiner And Wife Found Dead In Los Angeles Home'* *I too thought a suicide pact, as I did when I read that Gene Hackman and his wife died together earlier this year. The son being the alleged perpetrator has not been widely reported.

I don't like it when people like you try to be the thread police. There's moderators here on the website, so report to them if you want.

Happyjoe · 15/12/2025 09:14

Just horrific, what a tragic and horrible ending. If it is their son, jesus christ, what an evil little shit, nobody should die at the hands of a trusted loved one (or be murdered at all, of course by anyone).

nomas · 15/12/2025 09:44

Terrible news, the stuff of nightmares. This is how I always remember Rob Reiner for some reason, love this film.

Surely the Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa deaths should make people hesitate before theorising.

We're all individuals and therefore we all think and feel differently.

"Police also said no-one had been arrested, but that no suspect or person of interest was currently being sought." This is what the BBC report currently says and did leave me wondering how one can stab oneself to death. It is very very sad.

lifeonmars100 · 15/12/2025 09:58

Deeply shocking, my mind keeps imagining the horror of their final moments. Awful and profoundly traumatising for the rest of the family and all who loved them.

Echobelly · 15/12/2025 10:00

This is shocking news. Such a great director and it sounds like he was very well loved by those who worked with him.

Rewis · 15/12/2025 10:17

Apparently Nick went to rehab for the first time when he was 15yo and by the time he was 19, he had been to regan 17 times. No idea if he has been clean or relapset or what the situations is with hia drug use and mental health (or even if he did it, but there has been a few articles abou mentioning it). But very tragic and absolutely terrible for their other children if it was the brother.

MyOtherProfile · 15/12/2025 10:19

This is awful. I hadn't heard it anywhere else. Princess bride is my favourite film ever. What an awful ending for this couple.

Rewis · 15/12/2025 10:22

The investigators should stick to evidence but I feel like the gebral public can theorise and ponderall they want, even lawenforcement will theorise cause otherwise how will they move on with investigations? As long as people know what are the ahrd evidence and what is speculation, this is the place to do it.

I am devastated!

When Harry Met Sally (my all-time favourite film) and The Princess Bride are watched every Christmas in our house.

There is so much of Rob Reiner in When Harry Met Sally - lots of dialogue is based on real conversations between RR and Billy Crystal and Nora Ephron. And Harry and Sally getting together at the end only happened because he met and fell in love with his wife during filming and believed in love again.

An absolute tragedy.

Thank you for sharing that.

its interesting (& lovely) about the ending of Harry Met Sally. I watched it the other week. It's one of those films that's on all the time & I don't watch because 'I've seen this' but realised I couldn't remember the ending. As I was watching it I realised I probably haven't watched it in decades, if at all since it first came out!

Honestly I couldn't have told you who wrote or directed it, but I will look up some of his other films.

it's a terrible tragedy that two people have been killed by their son. They look like people you'd instantly warm to. My heart breaks for their daughter (& other siblings), family & friends.
