i know this is tragic but why is this getting so much news.People get murdered by family members on a daily basis. It’s almost like they are the US royal family.

Famous people don't. Also, Rob Reiner made some of the best loved films of the last few decades.

Double murders of a couple by their child?

That would absolutely be news no matter who it was. The fame (and Trump's stupid responses ) have perhaps promoted it up the news.

He’d been homeless and on Sunday night checked into an average hotel, so I doubt he’s currently rich enough to pay this lawyer.

Assuming Rob and Michelle named Nick in their wills, I just read that Nick will find himself ineligible to inherit because of the California law called ‘slayer statue’ so if you murder someone you’re due to inherit from and you’re convicted and sane, you don’t get a penny from the estate. But if he’s found not guilty due to insanity then he could be allowed to inherit, which his lawyer will be well aware of, of course.

Hmm interesting.

He’s famous and made films people have a lot of affection for, so people have wanted to talk about his films. People don’t stab to death both of their parents on the regular. Events have moved quickly so there has been things to report. Trump has waded in

Rob Reiner was the son of a famous actors, an actor and acclaimed director himself and a very high profile democrat.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/12/2025 00:45

I saw the news that Nick Reiner has been diagnosed as having schizophrenia. I figured that would be the case. He's apparently unable to grasp what he's done.

MyOtherProfile · 23/12/2025 04:18

That just adds to the tragedy 😢

AbbaCadaBra · 23/12/2025 08:07

Is the diagnosis new? After all these years?

Yes, those films are kind of important to me. I have watched when H met S so many times and never tire of it. I even visited the famous diner in New York and “had what she was having” in the self same seat. Right now I can’t bring myself to watch it again. I try but I just think about him and his wife. We sort of know these people.

I too have been wondering about that. Like I said before, if he pleads and is found (right word?) not guilty due to insanity he may be due an inheritance. He will also escape the death penalty. There are huge stakes involved here.

yeah and with the best lawyer in the country with access to a team of experts who can provide any and all last minute diagnoses, who knows what’s real anymore?

Me too - I've seen it so so many times. I don't normally watch and rewatch movies but WHMS is my exception, I always watch it over the Christmas holidays and it's going to be emotional this year.

He's in his early 30s isn't he? That's not outside the normal range for a schizophrenia diagnosis.

Honestly I would be much more surprised if this was not the result of some kind of psychotic episode than it being the case.

AttackCat · 23/12/2025 08:57

When I was on jury service I was on a trial for a violent assault where we were directed by the judge to submit a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity because the defendant was schizophrenic and committed the crime while psychotic. It was quite strange as although it was technically a jury trial there was an agreement between the prosecution and defence that yes, he did it, but he wasn't culpable due to his mental health.

Lalgarh · 23/12/2025 09:02

There was mention of the medication he was on making him "act crazy" a few days ago. This could be a psychotic episode but was the violence new?

His parents spent a huge amount of resource on helping him with his problems. That RR comment from the earlier interview mentioned all the dozens of therapists and doctors they had gone to. I'm sure this would have included some sort of psychiatric assessment.

There was also that comment about them all saying he was manipulating them and his parents realising they must be wrong and they should believe their son, hence the Being Charlie film

I'm absolutely no expert but my understanding was that schizophrenia/psychosis can manifest quite suddenly, so I think you could have been assessed in the past and it not been evident at that time.

I don't know if there's a difference legally between a psychotic episode induced by drug use vs. one deemed to be caused by an underlying mental health condition like schizophrenia?

diagnosis is based on diagnostic criteria, collateral history, mental state and clinical presentation. It’s quite subjective and dependant on the psychiatrist/multidisciplinary team you see. There have been many big cases, where psychiatrists have disagreed. For example, Ian Brady was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia but other psychiatrists disagreed and said he had a serious personality disorder, not schizophrenia. In the big bucks stakes of the American court system, I imagine it’s easier to find experts who will provide evidence to make sure the client doesn’t get the death penalty and (if deemed criminally insane) goes to a forensic psychiatric facility instead of prison.

I agree, they spent a huge amount of time and money helping him and presumably had access to the best psychiatrists etc in California. Maybe I’m cynical, but experience has shown me that when it comes to vast sums of money that’s up for grabs, there is nothing some people won’t do to obtain that money. His LIFE is also dependent on the type of conviction he may get.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/01/2026 14:04

@Lalgarh he moved for a public defender to take over. It's likely too costly for Nick to keep him - my guess watching LA news yesterday.
(I'm in Vancouver and get KTLA).

And tragically, of course...he was manipulating them. If only he had been sectioned. I can see why Reiners didn't want to give up on their son, but if only they had...😢

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/01/2026 04:02

Read today that it was Nick's siblings that made the decision with family support to stop paying for the private defence attorney.
I just can't imagine the trauma they're enduring.

berlinbaby2025 · 13/01/2026 07:47

I read that that (taxpayer funded) public defender and that defenders team may not be able to afford to bring in psychologists etc to assess Nick, which may impact should he plead not guilty due to insanity.

OonaStubbs · 23/02/2026 23:39

How can he plead not guilty? He needs to accept that he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
