A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I go to the City to see our brokers etc a couple of times per month - there is definite unease in certain parts of finance, particularly in PB and wealth, coupled with the march of AI.

Some of the tier one banks usually decimate around this time of year, too.

Otherwise, like the rest of us - many of them are hugely exposed to this government, via increased tax, and falling asset values etc.

DH works in IT in investment banking, fairly senior. Last week he found out that 4 friends in similar positions in various banks have either not had their contracts renewed or made redundant. All jobs offshored to India.

Something needs to be done to stem the flow of jobs offshore. Increasing employers NI is certainly not going to help.

I'm going to be writing to my MP as whilst offshoring has always happened, it's reaching tidal wave proprtions now.

I am not involved in the IT side, but I can well believe what you say, and it’s compounded by people losing their role in a very bad market. I have previously worked at firms where the back office function was moved to global hubs, such as New Delhi, Singapore and Montevideo.

Whilst the ‘arb remains open’, I do not see much changing - this government are economic pygmies, and I don’t believe they give a toss should jobs be lost offshore.

Admirable that you are writing to your MP.

I agree they couldn't care less. My MP is lib dem and useless but I feel I should do something. If DH loses his job he'll just retire and we'll be fine.

I'm much much more worried about the younger generation. They'll have to emigrate.

With regard to off-shoring, IME, it's only Nationwide where I'm pretty sure I'll be speaking to someone who has English as their first language, although I doubt a change of government will improve that situation.

(It's possible I've been living under a rock, but I've just heard for the first time a radio advert for JPM Personal Investment. Have they been reduced to scrabbling for business as a direct result of Labour's destructive meddling?)

EmeraldRoulette · 19/12/2025 17:22

@Prometheus78 thank you. I should've guessed that 😳

@DancingFerret do you mean JP Morgan? Haven't Chase always been involved in consumer banking - so maybe the JP Morgan bit is diversifying as well? Just a thought. I don't actually know about this stuff beyond a little reading. I used to keep on top of it but losing track (and I don't really need to know it for work anymore).

Yes, JP Morgan. As I said, I just can't think I've heard radio advertising from them before now.

@DancingFerret I just looked it up.
I don't do radio but I have seen a lot of Chase adverts online recently

Apparently, Chase have been doing advertising for their consumer side in the UK since early last year.

I noticed it because I find it strangely comforting, because it reminds me of times in the US! But yeah, it looks like they started under the previous government.

Yes! My mum (who is 85 but sharp and savvy) recommended a Chase account to me recently that she has opened…😀

On the subject of elections

There are some people on MN who are absolutely convinced that Trump is going to stop elections

I wonder if they have any comment on this.

I get really confused with some of the things that posted here about America but I suspect I am using totally different sources of news than they are

EmeraldRoulette · 19/12/2025 21:21

Just looked at that newest David Betz interview

When I saw the other one, I did find him very waffly and I thought perhaps as he's had a lot of coverage, he might have changed - plus I was curious to know if his view has evolved over the year.

Unfortunately, I find he is waffling even more so I'm not going to be able to listen to that. I do struggle with podcasts generally though!

Who knows. I read the odd USA newspaper but most are behind a pay wall and far from neutral.

If Starmer stops the 53 local elections that is ten million voters. That's shocking.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 19/12/2025 23:09

Labour’s blown any criticism of despotic regimes. Saudi? Myanmar? Afghanistan? Russia? Etc. They’d all be entitled to laugh at us if we say they’re undemocratic.

Why on earth is he stopping so many elections. Bizarre.

People will just loathe them more. Look at this Cornwall result for Labour. BBC have it like this, can’t see percentage list. Under 1% for them apparently.

Heinz Glanville, Reform UK - 408
John Fitter, Independent - 325
Geoff Brown, Liberal Democrat - 296
Frances Williamson, Green Party - 173
Mark Formosa, Conservative - 73
Stuart Hind, Labour - 9
Nigel May, Independent - 3

TheNuthatch · 20/12/2025 09:21

Good morning 😁

In the last week, 1360 people have crossed the channel in small boats (that we know of).

I haven't been checking the numbers recently as December is supposed to be a quiet month. 🤯

Its so wrong that elections are being cancelled. It shouldn't be allowed. I keep saying this I know, but imagine if this was a Reform government behaving like this? What would the left be saying?

Labour - 9! Blimey.

I do hope the Conservative majority councils go ahead with theirs, as it's the councillors who decide.

I can't find it now (grr) but I read somewhere yesterday that the cons had cancelled some of theirs. It will benefit them, so probably seen as a good opportunity.
I was hoping they would take the high ground and go ahead, but it seems not.

So do I. By banning the elections they've confirmed they're not a democratic political party, but dictators in the true sense of the word.

TheNuthatch · 20/12/2025 09:42

Labour are also ditching the daily press briefing from No.10.
They are above scrutiny.
