Thread 19 - TalkLair: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long"

(Previous thread 18)

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat...

In the TalkLair, the fairy lights are festooned on the mantlepiece, the tree is twinkling with baubles, the mince pies are in the oven, the MN legendary chicken is ready to feed the hordes. The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics. We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

You wait and wait for a few dry days, and it's time to get the bike out. Trouble is, it's a bit too hot today for bikes. Especially if your bike has under-seat exhausts, they tend to get quite warm in summer. Still, I managed a run out to around Oldham and back (about 60m round trip). Not the most scenic, but I just wanted to put a few miles on her and see how she's running.

33C here now Confused

artant · 23/06/2026 21:45

Seriously heavy rain and lots of thunder and lightning here in the night then 34°C today. I’m not looking forward to the whole it’ll be hotter tomorrow thing.

I popped out earlier in search of some cooler T shirts for my mum and greatly appreciated having air con in my car.

BetjemansBear · 24/06/2026 07:16

7.15am and it's already 25C. Crap.

BetjemansBear · 24/06/2026 14:13

I'm sitting with my feet in a washing bowl of cold water and it's lovely.

artant · 25/06/2026 00:29

And now it’s gone midnight and still 24°C. This is not good.

moto748e · 26/06/2026 01:25

I'm listening to Bill Withers right now singing Lovely Day

and I'm reminded once again of the wise words of a mate of mine many years ago, who commented on how black music used to be joyful and celebratory; Tamla Motown and the likes of BW. Whereas nowadays, all too much of it is, "I’m going to fuck that ho'". And I say that as a fan of hip-hop, which can be much better than that. I was listening to A Long Hot Summer by Masta Ace earlier, and it is brilliant.

Massive thunderstorm first thing this morning, had to rush around closing all the wide-open windows. But within an hour it was gone and now we're back to blazing sun. I swear my patio is steaming Grin

I looked at a live lightning map earlier this morning and saw all the thunderstorms up north. It made me very envious too!

Gonners · 26/06/2026 11:19

@Kucinghitam The BBC says it's currently a chilly 28C with humidity of 63% where you are, and it "feels like" 36C..

The BBC also says it's 28C with humidity of 56% here, and it "feels like" 34C.
(It actually doesn't feel that hot indoors, probably because I got up at 4 and opened all the windows and doors for a couple of hours. But it's nasty outside.)

So basically everywhere feels like Singapore, but without the ubiquitous aircon!

Kucinghitam · 26/06/2026 11:23

TBH I'm feeling right at home today!

We had to go out in the midst of the storm to collect our weekly veg box as per our early-morning Friday routine, DH was fretting about his shoes getting soaked. I reminded him to think like a Malaysian, so we went out in our rubber flip-flops Grin

I swear my patio is steaming

An abiding memory is walking back to school for the afternoon after heavy rain and the steam rolling down the road.

Britinme · 26/06/2026 12:29

Temps in the 80s here in NJ. Heading back to Maine today, in time for it to cool down there and warm up here - result!

DeanElderberry · 26/06/2026 14:27

From another thread:

@PoppySeedBagelRedux · Today 13:36
I see that a post on MN by a certain Sinner Boy has been mentioned today in the employment tribunal where a trans ID man with a GRC is objecting to DEFRA allowing a sex realist network (SEEN).

SqueakyDinosaur · 26/06/2026 14:42

The one that's mentioned in para 38 of the witness statement is probably the best fit - that's when Mumsnet crops up:

“’Unsafe’ at work. Riiiight. I pity their managers trying to restrain a massive eye
roll.”

Full witness statement here - another poster described reading it as a chore, and it is, but it's also absolutely jawdropping in its entitlement and solipsism.

Thanks, Squeaky.

SqueakyDinosaur · 26/06/2026 14:46

Although I can't find that specific comment under SB's name on here.

SinnerBoy · 26/06/2026 17:21

The thunder has just started again here. We had about an hour from 7:30 this morning, with some brief, heavy showers and some light ones later.

It's almost like night, I've had to put the lights on! Our Ukrainian lady was nervous again, I had to reassure her that it was just thunder.

Kucinghitam · 27/06/2026 10:11

And it wouldn't be a MN thread without a subset of disproportionately angry people grasping at the wrong end of the wrong stick Grin

OP posts:
BetjemansBear · 27/06/2026 10:19

Yeah, just come across those comments. FFS, just stick to the grumpy models so we can laugh at them!

moto748e · 28/06/2026 11:47

Got up this morning to find some scrotes have stolen my bike from out of my back-yard! 😡Just been through the tiresome online reporting to insurance and police. Seems like this is the end of my motorcycling career.

BetjemansBear · 28/06/2026 12:16

Sorry to hear that, @moto748e what a shitty thing to happen. Do you think there's any chance of ever getting it back?

BetjemansBear · 28/06/2026 12:18

In better news, the temperature has gone down massively here, nearly 10C, and I'm so relieved. Every window is open and there is a cool breeze blowing in, it's wonderful.
