Thread 19 - TalkLair: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long"

(Previous thread 18)

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat...

In the TalkLair, the fairy lights are festooned on the mantlepiece, the tree is twinkling with baubles, the mince pies are in the oven, the MN legendary chicken is ready to feed the hordes. The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics. We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

If you live to 110 you’ll probably be using your keys less so I reckon it’ll still see you out.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 17/06/2026 08:14

Can I conduct a short poll please?
When you’re drying yourself after a shower or bath do you do as I do and sit on the loo cover (assuming there’s no stool)? I’ve just stayed with friend and sitting on the loo cover in her smart new shower room, I broke it. I weigh 55 kg, and it was extremely flimsy. She seemed surprised at my sitting down. Am I weird, or is it relatively normal to sit down?
She did say, and I agree, that it is a good time to practice standing on one leg, so I may start doing that, but it’s more relaxing to sit down.

DeanElderberry · 17/06/2026 08:24

I tend to stand for the first scrub, then put on a towelling robe and let it do the job while I brush my teeth (standing). Never sit to dry off, but have a stool in the shower and sit on that while I wash.

Gonners · 17/06/2026 09:46

I usually stand to dry myself - <on edit> and stand on one leg to dry my feet! It's good to practise keeping your balance! But I've just weighed myself (56 kg) and sat on ours, and it's perfectly solid. She needs a better loo-seat. I strongly recommend the GoodHome Pilica soft-close range! We have the blue and white striped anchor one and it's very jolly.

BetjemansBear · 17/06/2026 11:07

I don't think I've ever sat down to dry myself, though it will doubtless happen one day. At the moment I dry myself in exactly the same way after every shower and have done for years.

I don’t sit down to dry myself but I weigh considerably more than 56kg and have often sat on the loo seat cover for other reasons. She needs a better loo seat.

weaselyeyes · 17/06/2026 11:58

That does sound a flimsy seat. Mine is similar, and I wouldn't risk sitting on it, even though I weigh a bit less. I think some are built for sitting, and some just to prevent the supposed unseemliness of having a bowl on display, or for inhibiting splashing reasons.

I dry myself standing in the bath/shower, which the cat treats as a national emergency, running up and down and squeaking pathetically. When I'm ready to get out, I put the towel on the floor and try to step on it whilst he collapses on it with relief that an apocalypse has been averted. I then bend over to dry between my toes with any free corner of the towel I am permitted to use. Standing on one leg would be useless as he won't release enough towel to reach. I do my standing on one leg manoeuvres whilst cleaning my teeth.

Kucinghitam · 17/06/2026 12:15

Haha @weaselyeyes Grin

Mochi is not allowed in the bathroom while we shower because she is an agent of chaos. So she waits at the door, shouting loudly, until the sound of running water stops. You can always tell when somebody in the house is having a shower.

I stand to dry, and the loo isn't in the bathroom. However, it has a good sturdy wooden seat that could be sat on by someone a lot heavier than 56kg if wanted. I intensely dislike those flimsy plastic lids that bend when sat on.

ProfessorBinturong · 17/06/2026 12:27

When staying in places that do have an all-in-one arrangement I'll quite often sit on the lid (cutting nails, putting socks on etc). It's definitely not an odd thing to do.

weaselyeyes · 17/06/2026 12:28

My bathroom door no longer locks properly due to cats repeatedly shouldering it in outrage at being excluded.

I would like to swap to a sturdy wooden seat, but I fear getting one and discovering it doesn't fit properly, which will add to my list of domestic stressors and helpless rage.

artant · 17/06/2026 13:14

I dry myself as much as I can in the bathroom after a shower then wrap myself in a bathrobe and lounge about in my bedroom until I’m properly dry. The bathroom is tiny and the loo is separate so there is no chance of sitting down (except on the edge of the very low sided bath which is hardly a comfy option).

But I do sit on the lid of my downstairs loo when I need to find something in the cupboard under the wash basin. It wouldn’t occur to me that there was a risk of breaking the lid and I weigh a lot more than 55kg.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 17/06/2026 13:42

Thanks all! I’m glad I’m not totally mad. I stood on one leg this morning while I dried myself which was definitely A Good Thing To Do. My left leg is much weaker than my right, so standing on it alone every morning will be a sensible thing to do, to strengthen it.

BetjemansBear · 17/06/2026 17:27

@PoppySeedBagelRedux - I sometimes brush my teeth whilst in 'horse stance' where you stand as though you're sitting on a horse with your feet in the stirrups and that's a good leg strengthener, though it's not pleasant when you first start.

Glad it's not just me. I also shower in exactly the same way every time.

moto748e · 18/06/2026 00:21

I've had a bad day, people. I was very excited to get a ticket to see one of favourite artists in Camden tonight. So I ordered the train tickets, and found myself a room nearby, all good. Got there in plenty of time, strolled over to the door (there was hardly anyone around, it was only 6.50 pm) and asked the guy on the door, when the main man going to be on? He said, about seven, mate. And I thought, not really, that never happens, but they want you to get in there early, buy their beer, etc. So I went back to the pub across the road and had a pint. Around 8.40 I thought, this sounds about right, walked across the road, and he said, it's all over, mate. They had brought it forward so they could screen England v Fucking Croatia at 9 pm! Then I remembered that there was a last train at about ten past nine. I thought, wasn't certain. So I RAN back to the room, grabbed my bag, and RAN back to the Tube. Luckily it's only two stops to Euston. I made the train with seconds to spare. All in all, the day must have cost me the best part of 250 quid. For fuck all.

moto748e · 18/06/2026 00:23

I'd arranged to meet up with my DS tomorrow morning too.

Britinme · 18/06/2026 01:27

Oh what a pain, @moto748e! Sympathies.

SinnerBoy · 18/06/2026 06:45

Oh dear, Moto, my sympathies. Console yourself with the knowledge that England won the ponce's kickyball 4-2.

I get out of the shower onto a spare towel and dry the more inaccessible areas and half dry my hair, then put a dressing gown on and lounge for a bit.

Kucinghitam · 18/06/2026 12:45

Sympathies @moto748e, what a shame!

Cheers, all. So fucking annoying. But you gotta move on, what's done is done.

SqueakyDinosaur · 18/06/2026 18:51

Absolutely. It's why I always just pay parking tickets and other Stupidity Taxes as soon as possible. It stops me getting into negative spiralling.

Gonners · 19/06/2026 22:01

I've had a surprisingly good day, which started when I opened the spare wardrobe in MrG's room looking for shorts (mine is full of his unworn coats, loo roll, beach towels and very few actual clothes) and came across a stash of Brand New Stuff that I had never worn and completely forgotten about. So today I wore a gorgeous dark red fitted t-shirt style dress with narrow white stripes, which I must have bought more than 10 years ago. Googling the label suggests that it came from a tiny backstreet shop in Ramsgate. Three neighbours commented on how nice it looked - well, it was more "Gosh! You do look nice!" which is perhaps a bit ambiguous? But they meant well. 😉

I also found some (more recent) unworn stuff from Seasalt and a pair of circa 2015 unworn M&S cords in a violent shade of pink. So I shall be poncing around, frightening the seagulls.

ProfessorBinturong · 19/06/2026 22:38

I'm all for frightening gulls. Give them a taste of their own medicine.
