Weird intimidating stares - what is it with clothes models about to duff you up behind the bike sheds (or worse)?

Collective marketing depts must have decided 'DIRTY LOOKS SELL CLOTHES'.

It's just so odd. Hush models are frankly terrifying. M&S has a hefty sprinkle of 'ard. Many of the Seasalt models look like you just pissed on their chips. Mint Velvet, cross. H&M, thoroughly pissed off. Even the White Stuff models look rather disappointed in you.

AIBU?

Definitely not BU, I noticed it the other day. Not just dirty looks but utterly bizarre poses that seem to hide how the actual clothes look.

CryptoFascist · 26/06/2026 11:16

How about that squatting-for-an-outdoor-piss-pose that they all do now? Totally hides the clothes, weird!

Canoodler · 26/06/2026 11:24

Went on Seasalt to see what you were talking about and saw one friendly face. Then I realised it was not a professional model so he has not seen the act all hard memo.

It’s because smiley models are associated with catalogue clothes and other unfashionable brands.

The grump is there to tell you it’s ART, ok??

PintofFizz · 26/06/2026 11:46

This is so true. The Seasalt models are always in beautiful places, sitting on a deckchair and yet looking for all the world like they've just put their life savings on the wrong horse.

The women in their shops are always so smiley and friendly, you wonder why it doesn't translate to the models.

Floisme · 26/06/2026 11:52

One advantage of approaching 70 is that I'm no longer instructed to 'Smile love - it might never happen' by random men in the street, so you'll have to forgive me if I'm unimpressed to see this spreading to Style and Beauty.

In many cases, I suspect it's to hide the fact that a lot of clothes these days are made on the cheap and not cut properly (boxy shapes that hang awkwardly and look a mess). No problem! Just put the model into a ridiculous, scrunched up pose so that you can't see that the arms are too short or your midriff is exposed...

I thought this the other day. Why are model so angry now? Plus the weird poses?

AsteriaBuffy · 26/06/2026 12:04

Even the smiling ones have smiles that are... a bit sinister.

I bet the squatting thing is also to demonstrate that they (unlike me) have properly been doing their yoga/martial arts and could definitely take you out behind the bike sheds with no effort at all.

I’m quite fond of the model in the M&S ad wearing the Missoni-esque bikini, she does this little face / eye-roll thing.

The models on H&M website are always bent into strange poses, almost like Vicky B when she sees a red carpet.

M&S has been channeling a bit of that in a bid to be more edgy. Scowling cos they were put in a “midaxi”

This one is doing the passive-aggressive "are you OK, Hun?" complete with the head-tilt. Riverboat Cardigan - Seasalt Cornwall

This is absolutely not the same thing.

Moonlightdust · 26/06/2026 12:33

Ha the head tilt one is funny! I think everyone should definitely copy & paste some more examples in here for a laugh!

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 26/06/2026 12:37

The Me+Em ones look like we've gatecrashed a funeral or something.

Moonlightdust · 26/06/2026 12:43

Starting off with a quick browse in Next - these say ‘utterly bored with my life’, ‘you’re a worthless piece of s**t’ and general condescending and smugness vibes..

I think I’d pull that face if I was made to wear that outfit!!

Petrine · 26/06/2026 12:45

I was going to write exactly the same thing. I find it really off-putting to be scowled at aggressively by the models. Why do companies think this will prompt sales of their clothes?

I also don't get the M&S poses in the lingerie section. Legs wide apart, or sitting with trousers unzipped and open whilst reclining, again with legs akimbo, when modelling bras. It looks suggestive to say the least and I find it distasteful.

Also on the bra subject - why put a jacket on the model who's showing a bra to the extent that you can't see the item other than a glimpse of it at the front?

Lastly...

Models who stand absolutely straight, arms by the side, staring blankly - Toast often do this as does Ghost. You might as well take photos of the garments on hangers.

Zara models are like “Ugh you. You clicked this website did you? You, the xxl. I’m
not even going to look at you, you disgust me…”

True - and in fact in the latter two photos she seems to be desperately trying to hide her identity.
