.

We were chatting with someone who recruits for the construction industry at a social event this week. He said they are losing a lot of eastern Europeans as they are going back home in droves. He also said the age profile of British tradies is scarey and, for example, 1/3 of kitchen fitters will reach retirement age within 10 years. He was moaning about the reluctance of employers in construction to take on apprentices.

I’m a Catholic and I doubt they’d want to attend my church when they saw the range of people attending and skin colour (including me.)

They might feel safer to voice their horrid views in the church where I grew up, a lot whiter and rural. Until they find out the ethnicity of the reader, hear the sermons and find out about the outreach days for refugees from the nearest city and that a lot volunteering there.

I may return to service in our local Catholic church, though I won't believe, just attend.

I remember the missions mass when I was a young girl growing up in Northern Ireland during the troubles. It was a time to meet people from different countries and ethnicity. All of us wanting equity and peace.

Tis no surprise. Trump praised Poland and Hungary on their migration policy.

Which is why you can almost understand why they can be fooled into this mental "Christian Nationalism" thing.

Hopefully we're not quite so gullible over here, but then we did vote for Brexit...

England and Wales voted for Brexit. That's a score draw when it comes to the United Kingdoms.

The lack of interest or desire to train (or retrain) anyone in the perceived traditional trades is so frustrating and self defeating! The U.K. seems hell bent on removing any chance of creating jobs for anyone who doesn't have a degree or any further education experience.

I know. Just awful. Did you see the man in Bondi who single handedly disarmed one the shooters? Absolute hero.

Notonthestairs · 14/12/2025 11:17

The news is very bleak this morning. Such violence. But yes the man tackling the shooter showed immense courage.

placemats · 14/12/2025 11:50

The shootings at a Hanukkah on Bondi beach is shocking and much love to all who have been horribly affected by this. So much hatred and for what end? It serves no purpose.

PandoraSocks · 14/12/2025 11:55

It is just so unspeakably cruel, killing innocent people who were celebrating Hanukkah. 💔

Notonthestairs · 14/12/2025 11:58

Yes, targeting Jewish people peacefully celebrating the start of Hanukkah.
And a bomb in a car.

I am reading the thread on it and there is a poster actually having a go at the government statement that was released before the Aus press conference with more specific details.

Waiting for police to confirm information is pretty standard procedure isn’t it?

Horrific news from Australia. And it had to potential to be so much worse, which makes it all the more shocking.

Enjoyed one of the few remaining brass ensembles in the area playing festive tunes, this morning. Such a lovely sound they made.

The council has been doing a fair bit, over the years, to try to revive these groups and bring in young players. I remember the band in the village I used to live in winding down after they had been to so many of each others funerals that there were only 3 of them left to walk behind the car on the way to the church.

Anyhow, it got me pondering how much support our current council is willing to give this very British tradition. They don't seem to have much time for the arts and culture in general.

I've seen the video. The man is an absolute hero.

Horrific scenes and my thoughts are with the victims.
