Is that about the whitewashing of Mr Al Ahmed's name?

7News Australia reports that the hero who jumped and disarmed one of the terrorist shooters

His name is Ahmed el-Ahmed

A 43 year old married father of two

He owns a fruit shop in Sutherland

No experience with guns

He was walking past

He has two bullets in his arm

My heart goes out to him. He saved so many.

itsgettingweird · 14/12/2025 20:17

Amazing how many cannot accept a hero is a hero because of his religion and ethnicity.

Well done Ahmed. A true hero who others owe their life too.

Ive seen a picture of him disarming one gin man and its lathe rifle type gun - the level of bravery to do that is astonishing.

More than 150 anonymous channels using cheap AI tools to spread false stories about Keir Starmer, study finds

We have put up our Christmas tree today and took photos. My daughter and I do it. And it's a time to chat. Our discussion did focus on AI and how to discern between reality and the 'other'. We agreed it was tricky, but we always check, double check and triple check before liking and reposting.

Can't stand B B

Met him a long time ago and it was not pleasant - professional meet.

Evenstar · 14/12/2025 22:18

I have never met him @placemats, but seen him live a few times and loved his music as a student.

Im finding it quite surprising that Tom Dolphin the head of the BMA is saying the impact of flu is being exaggerated.

Normally you'd expect some common consensus on the impact of minimising illness with medical profession and lawmakers. What happens if theres a new virus or mutations and this apparent schism still exists

Streeting warns doctors’ strikes could collapse NHS amid flu surge

Tom Dolphin says ‘the same model that has worked for all the previous strikes to keep patients safe will apply’ during next week’s planned walkout, which comes amid surging flu cases

Well I agree that there is a year round crisis for some areas of the NHS but that doesn’t make the week before Christmas any less difficult.
They have to put the Governments offer to the vote don’t they? I wonder how long that takes to complete.

I think the result of the vote is due today. I gather support is much lower than it was last year.

I had to take a friend to an appointment Friday. The hospital was deserted (all those telephone consults have to be factored in).

It was a weird flashback as all the staff wearing masks. I felt a tad underdressed.

LlttledrummergirI · 15/12/2025 11:07

I've had many hospital appointments over the last 3 months in a couple of different departments.

I've found the admin side has been bloody awful- 2ww referrals not being flagged as urgent, but the care and speed once in the system fantastic. The hospitals that I've been seen in have been operating as usual.

SerendipityJane · 15/12/2025 11:45

True that. Really in the absence of addressing clinical need, they need 10x more people doing admin, and a load of really expensive computer systems.

I would settle for fully staffed admin and actual functional information systems.

My trust is going down there must save money so we will not recruit replacement staff when administered leave'. It's fully bananas.

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/12/2025 12:06

Snap @pointed no replacements for Jon clinical staff who leave. No cover for mat leave for those staff either. Also no overtime. Well not paid anyway. I’ve decided that my stress levels and kidney function is much better when I’m not trying to fit the work of 2FTE into 0.7.

I believe they would like to make redundancies but they can’t afford the redundancy payment. Unsurprisingly the mutually agreed resignation thing had a much lower uptake than they were expecting.

Evenstar · 15/12/2025 12:11

@SerendipityJane I do, that was one of the times I saw him live!

Not the last visit, but this year I was in a department with four administrators and one clinician.

I have a very low regards for admin staff every since their batshit system cost me 8 months delay in being seen, and then have them lie about it then (2002) and (when I had to go back to this trust after 22 years) were not only using the same system, but still lying about it.

As a public service, if you have recently moved and are wondering why any hospital appointments you were expecting haven't come through then access your physical records (because the system will be up to date every time you check). Go to the back of the folder, and remove the sheet of labels with your previous address on them that are being used to send out letters. Ignore all and every person who tells you (a) that this isn't how they do appointments and/or (b) they update the sheet every time you notify them of a change of address.

I try not to carry the "What if ... ?" burden to remain the cheery uncynical optimist you read before you. But it can slip some days.

I’m seeing Billy Bragg next year as support act for Squeeze. Quite looking forward to it. We played one of his songs at DFs funeral. I don’t know much about him as a person.

I believe they've opted to strike. Disappointed to say the least knowing how it will impact the wards. For our patients on crit care they'll just get reviewed by the consultants so in a way the care will be better.
Listening to LBC last week I learnt that the BMA is lead by Corbyn supporters and are far more militant. I know of several docs who've left the union, both senior and junior.

Evenstar · 15/12/2025 13:13

It’s very disappointing, DH has his first oncology appointment tomorrow already delayed by a week due to staff sickness, just hoping the strike won’t cause any further delay. I think in the middle of a flu crisis it is very selfish.

Especially when deliberately starving the NHS to the bone[1] so there is a permacrisis to allow the government to try and hold some sort of public moral ground is very much #ToryTactics 101.

[1]Well not the private companies that have to make a profit from it.

Still wrong whatever your feelings about the government. Leaves nurses and patients in the proverbial.
The BMA I believe doesn't provide strike pay and yet docs can literally afford to lose weeks of earnings whilst on industrial action. Otoh nurses are very much constrained from striking because of the huge financial loss and if anything have far worse training and work conditions than any doctor.
