Labour isn't working - Thread 21

TheNuthatch · 23/11/2025 09:49

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

We are bracing for the budget 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Thank you for the new thread @TheNuthatch and I hope you and your DH are feeling as well as you can be.

Just been reading the wealth tax thread - I’m impressed with some of your tenacity!

@TheNuthatch thanks for the new thread.

I've decided I'm not going to watch the budget. It's going to be too awful. Bad news can always wait

We keep saying we'll go out for lunch first time post OP for me. There's a lovely pub with real fires. So I'll be ordering the venison pie and a goldfish bowl of sauvignon blanc. Maybe a drive through the countryside on the way back. Then home to our own fire and a snooze.

By the evening all the data will be available so can tick off the ones that are going to affect us

A drive though the countryside to sober up?😀

I think they'll hit dividend tax too. Again, it can be sold as taxing nasty rich people, and little understood.

They may as well kill off start ups if so. Listening to the a welfare guy rn (Milburn) and he talks about demand led change ie employers.

Which is why their NI policy and anything on dividends plus day one stuff is so barking and madly damaging.

I don’t think boohoo has found us yet but I agree re dc - elder one has dual nationality, the actual facts are that they could move to any high tax country now and get much better public services for their tax contributions…

I do feel the tories now they’re finally in opposition need to be hitting that message of ‘the high earners do pay and pay and pay and if we’re talking about ‘fairness’ the only way to go is increase taxes on average earners’. Or reform public services and worklessness…

I’m here! It’s gutting for DH and I that he didn’t apply for Irish citizenship before our DC were born otherwise they would have dual nationality too. DS1 is thinking about what A Levels he wants to take at the moment. He has no idea of what he wants to do but I am trying to encourage him to choose something that will make it easier for him to move abroad for work.

@Didyousaysomethingdarling but it's supposedly unearned income how can they and renters are already at the mercy of rent increases .

ReevesRuinedChristmas · 23/11/2025 11:38

Every single thing mooted hurts us expect getting a grip on the people bleeding us dry !
The people coming in on fake holiday visas ,fake colleges ,people who can't speak a word or English at uni causing problems ,people using a and e when they have not paid in .
Ask for national insurance no ! ..

Cut down on all this wastage and then tax us.

How many billions now spent on asslyum seekers from safe countries who snuck in not on a boat but via a holiday visa?

The easiest thing to start with is Chagos. I mean, that's billions for nothing. Just drop that today.

And yes, the whole dodgy student visa thing. I remember from the Sara Sherif case that her uncle had come here on a student visa, was supposedly towards a degree in Portsmouth, but whose English was so poor he required a translator.

Anyway, I've just put my order in for my Christmas tree. Going to collect it on 6 December. I need something to look forward to and this will hopefully cheer me up 🎄

ReevesRuinedChristmas · 23/11/2025 11:55

@Upstartled and who paid for that translator ? He chose Sarah's mum because she was polish and she was vulnerable.

EmpressoftheMundane · 23/11/2025 11:55

I’m travelling and missed the last third of the last thread- don’t think I can catch up!

I’m feeling very pessimistic. Mostly because I don’t think our fellow citizens are well educated, or capable of controlling their impulses for short term gain/spite over wanting whatever sounds goo to them in the moment.

That's the 1 thing I refuse to give up this year, a real Xmas tree.
We are getting ours next weekend 🎊

The Times is running with the headline that the benefit cap will be scrapped. It won’t be wanted by most. People will be angry.

Me too. Christmas isn't Christmas without a real tree in my opinion. Ours comes from a local community group so not too expensive. I've ordered 175cm for £42.

Just found this thread, missed the previous 20 but very happy to have found this before the budget which feels like a sword hanging over us just waiting to drop...

Welcome, glad you found us.

Yeah, I think only 30% of people are in favour of it, iirc. I think the thing that is missed in polling though, is just how much it pisses people off and offends their sense of fairness.

LeakyRad · 23/11/2025 12:07

Thanks for the new thread @TheNuthatch and I realised I missed what you said on the previous thread - I'm so sorry to hear about your business Flowers Wishing you and yours better things from now on (but not from Rachel, obviously).

I’ve realised Christmas has crept up on me whilst I’ve been paralysed by the budget. So far, i’m
half way through organising the cat’s Christmas present….

I never thought I’d see the day the uk ended up as the worst of both worlds - high tax, poor services and a sneering public discourse. We don’t have politicians or many journalists that attempt to explain anything with any complexity these days.

DancingFerret · 23/11/2025 12:08

I thought Andy Haldane showed great restraint and courtesy on Kuenssberg this morning when he was being constantly interrupted by the seemingly dim and narrow-minded Sharon Graham bleating repeatedly about wealth taxes.

Rivalled · 23/11/2025 12:09

Must take a very calm demeanour to debate some of these people…

Yes she was given an easy ride. Someone should have put her in her place.

Lovely 😊
You're absolutely right, we need to focus on the positives.
I'm still debating whether to sell my overly expensive fake tree that I bought last year. I love a real 🎄.
