Wasn't sure what council tax category we are in - checked and it's band G (thought it was F) - so my crystal ball predicts a fairly heavy financial hit for us 😭.
I wouldn't mind if there was a bit more (anything!) spent on flood defences in our area though...

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 26/11/2025 08:36

Although I did win £2.60 on the Euromillions last night so every cloud... 🤣🤣🤣

DuncinToffee · 26/11/2025 08:39

I am probably around at budget time, the sun is trying to come out so not all is bad Smile

I'm going away on holiday today. Will be very glad to be out of the country whilst the carnage is taking place. Hopefully the dust will have settled by the time I'm back and the numpties will realise that the world hasn't actually ended.

DuncinToffee · 26/11/2025 08:47

Enjoy your holiday!

I have absolutely nothing to do today so can sit back and watch the MN budget meltdown in real time.

Did better than me £2.40. Although I have had a run of wins and must be nearly up to £20 since the beginning of October. I shan't let it change my life.

We’re F. I’m having trouble working out what’s happening as I keep reading that £2 million properties are the target but ours is “worth” nothing like that. I guess all will become clear this afternoon.

dontcallmelen · 26/11/2025 09:12

Enjoy your holiday Littlebow hopefully the U.K. will not have spontaneously combusted whilst you are away I fear maybe MN may well do.
@cardibach belated congratulations excellent result for you at the weekend.

RR starts budget speech at 12.30

The smoking ruins and tide of froth will be visible from space - travelling or even going away only likely to give partial relief from the ensuing carnage

.

The same - our property value doesn't approach £1m - but I suspect there will be a hit for higher bands anyway.

To cheer people up I enclose a completely voluntary additional cat tax payment (posted on another thread so apologies if you've seen it already).
The best lego cat ever.

Clearly male 😹

I'm between phone appointments and will be cutting out some joggers and sweatshirt in a glorious shade of Bordeaux, today. I shall probably be tempted to rubberneck.

Have a fun holiday, food idea to leave before RR brings forth the apocalypse with the budget!

Talking of juries and bias, I’m off to see To Kill A Mockingbird in Cardiff this afternoon.
Hoping to miss the budget meltdown until later.

You haven't addressed the fact though that many highly liberal countries (for example, in Scandinavia) don't have juries.

Scandinavian countries do not send people to prison at anything like the same numbers as we do. But being judged by ordinary people rather a lawyer is innately more liberal than one or three judges if you risk going to prison which is where this proposal would apply. Despite all the hype about them being soft in the UK they are violent places with little chance of rehabilitation due to cuts. When someone’s liberty for years is at stake, this protection is in my view essential. And most importantly, it works.

I do agree with some of this. We need reform of our justice system and shift the focus to prevention and rehabilitation rather than just treating jail as a first option. It was interesting to hear the suggestion on the Today programme this morning of suspended trials for offences carrying a tariff of less than 12 months.

DuncinToffee · 26/11/2025 10:22

At the moment is nothing more than a proposal and it isn't getting rid of all jury trials. Let's wait and see what exactly is proposed and what the pros and cons are etc.

I actually didn't know that we have the highest incarceration rates in Western Europe but if we currently have the Jury system, does that play a part?

I have to go to work so won’t be here when the country ends at 12.30. It was lovely knowing you all.

3 more years of pain, before Nigel saves our finances.
