I had some genever once (which very much not like London Dry Gin).

So strong. Like antifreeze for the brain. Couldn’t feel my legs for a while.

Have you ever tried 'kruidenbitter'? Spiced genever (or brandy) that comes in a stone bottle, great for cold days

I have not! I like sloe gin in a hip flask but perhaps this is a worthy alternative

I am very angry at the government for the Covid failings. Around my birthday mid February I was thinking about not taking a train yet the government had its fingers in its ears. I had a “good” lockdown experience and did not lose anyone. But it set me back in some ways as well.

He has got his sister on LBC defending him

"He's getting all the blame and none of the credit" and "he did his best."

As I haven’t paid tax, here’s a pic of a jenever tasting from last year. Delicious. DH stuck to Scotch.

Sorry I haven’t been active on the thread lately—I’ve had an incredibly busy time and even tried to take a bit of a “news-free” week for my own sanity. I’m just catching up now.

I’m so sorry to hear about what everyone went through during COVID. It was such a difficult time, and honestly, I think I’ve pushed a lot of it out of my mind—it feels like a different world now. I think we suffer from collective amnesia, similar to after the Spanish Flu. I do remember being in a meeting back in February 2020, before everything changed—thinking it wouldn’t be so bad, but hearing one of the doctors on the board say, “It’s coming, and it’s going to be bad.” It gave me chills.

I had a cancer scare at the beginning of the pandemic and remember going to London Bridge when it was completely empty—it was so surreal. My sister was a key worker and had to live separately from our elderly parents, which was really tough for her and them. My aunt also sadly passed away from COVID later on in the pandemic.

Johnson should be held accountable, his Prime Ministerial privileges removed and he should be charged with gross misconduct. But he wont be of course.

On a different note - Just catching up on the latest “shock news” that Farage is a racist. Who knew? Honestly, I’d heard all this before (I'd read Michael Crick’s book). I don’t think the article will have much impact—racists gonna racist. Hopefully, he’ll get some kickback from the Gill verdict. (I don’t know him guv!) What a traitorous piece of shit that guy is.

Here's some belated tax, Power to the Hamsters. ✊

Sorry to hear about your cancer scare, I had similar and It is horrible waiting and not knowing.

My great Aunt died of COVID, she was in a care home and sadly the other person I knew who died fish and chips shop owner, only in his late 40s. I got COVID in the first few months couldn't walk upstairs etc. which was surreal as I was only 40 and had never experienced anything like that and was pretty fit.

This with bells on
plus all the over under investment to numerous to bloody list, utterly shameful if they’d have told the ERG nutters to fuck off & didn’t put party before country just maybe the country wouldn’t have suffered so much.

Spot on analysis

Seem to remember that consumption fell dramatically. But its stored in Lancaster House - I doubt its all that accessible without good reason (eg hosting dignitaries). Strongly suspect the local Tescos saw a roaring trade though.

I seem to remember the reason they knew about the drinking was that it was being wheeled in in a suitcase?!

I can’t imagine I’ve imagined that 🤔🫣

I think they were wheeling suitcases to the local Tesco to stock up?

You didn’t imagine it.

DuncinToffee · 21/11/2025 21:05

Telegraph had a headline “A booze run to fill a suitcase with wine,”

Port is something my nan drank Grin

As well as gin, or in Dutch 'jeneverbesje'

I drink, port (both red and white, neither with soda), gin and (when I can get it) jenever. I’m also partial to a good dry sherry (and one or two sweet ones). Makes me sound a bit of a lush.
Edit: I also like whisky. Currently partial to a Godfather cocktail - whisky and amaretto in a 2:1(ish) ratio.

I see Farage went out for an upmarket lunch instead of attending the parliamentary debate on immigration earlier this week.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/nigel-farage-skips-commons-debate-36288142

when I lived in the midlands there was a curry house that did lobster curries for a lot less than £68 (even adjusted for inflation). I wasn’t missing work to go either.

LlttledrummergirI · 21/11/2025 23:54

Sad to say, I think most things alcoholic are good. Except guiness- that stuff is vile. My doctor prescribed it for low iron many years ago, thank goodness for tablets!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 22/11/2025 01:44

I'm a bit of a port snob I'm afraid. I tried white port once - not impressed. The only use I found for it was to refresh the decanter prior to decanting vintage port.
I worked for Guinness in Park Royal in the dim and distant past though so I won't hear a word against that 🤣

Of course the Truth That Dare Not Speak Its Name around COVID is that the top tier of government talent was specifically chosen for their talent to pretend Brexit was the best thing since Sliced Bread. Talent was very much a "nice to have".

DuncinToffee · 22/11/2025 10:07

Money and staff diverted to Brexit preparations which they stuffed up in the same way.

Agreed. Johnson ruthlessly culled people who stood in the way of his Brexit project. The Conservative Party is now paying the price.

The handling of Covid isn't a party political issue for me. I can think of plenty of senior Conservative figures of the past who I think would have approached their responsibilities honestly and diligently. Johnson wouldn't recognise honesty or diligence if it bit him on the arse.

Of course my sentiments will disappoint those who've been gunning for Labour since before the election and who consistentently talk of people who support Labour no matter what.
