Of course the Truth That Dare Not Speak Its Name around COVID is that the top tier of government talent was specifically chosen for their talent to pretend Brexit was the best thing since Sliced Bread. Talent was very much a "nice to have".

Yes, and Johnson had booted out experienced, decent politicians.

That thread is fucking batshit, pardon my language.

It's a thinly veiled anti immigration thread as I said on there.

It's what incompetent self centred people do.

Churchill made a point of keeping in people who he wasn't necessarily keen on. Lord Halifax springs to mind. But then he wanted to win a war, not ponce about on the after-dinner circuit to feed an battalion of bastards.

DuncinToffee · 22/11/2025 10:32

Remember that picture of Davis showing up at the negotiation table without any paperwork.

The current holdings. Too much Bordeaux, not enough Pol Roger. An agreeable amount of English sparkling wine, and a really world leading amount of port!

Could do better on the Burgundy

Poor 1985 Croft Port. It’s been labelled as ‘not a keeper’.

Would love to know about the ‘unnamed’ occasions’ Harvey’s fine champagne cognac is only to be used for.

There is something deeply pleasing about excoriating Boris Johnson by specific comparisons to the person he unashamedly thought he could ape and finding him wanting in every single instance.

Of course the best course of action (suggested many times by people whp inhabit this corner of MN) would have been (as Churchill did) look to a national government. That would have taken the party politics out of a crisis and most certainly saved lives.

So - if we just run that last point through the reality filter. By pursuing what was best for the Conservative Party, people died.

I'm not a massive one for spectacle (I lie) but if a relative were to launch a case against the Conservative and Unionist party of Great Britain and Northern Ireland for the cost of their loved ones funeral, I might put £1 in a crowdfunder.

ilovesooty · 22/11/2025 10:48

The trouble is it wasn't even best for the Conservative Party. Johnson only cared about what was best for Johnson. He didn't even care about his own party

I believe Covid families for justice are exploring their options on that.

This is about the only time you will hear me give Thatcher any sort of positive recognition, but she’s have been a damn sight better than Johnson at leading this country through the pandemic. At least she’d have understood the science and maths. And I don’t see her missing 5 COBR meetings.

Shame they haven't got any Croft '45 on the list. Cheapskates 🤣.

This will be good for the Telegraph. I never thought it was right wing enough in the past 🤣.

It has become the Daily Mail with slightly longer words, so quite apt!

BIossomtoes · 22/11/2025 11:08

Oh fuck, someone in this house is going to be very, very grumpy about this. I feel a cancelled subscription coming on.

It’s been the daily mail for about a decade anyway.

I am a natural lefty, and marched more times that I can remember against things in the 80s at the head of a evil-incarnate Maggie Thatcher brigade.

However, credit where it is due, she put her feelz behind her science. Which is why the UK led the world in AIDS treatment in the 80s. She also kept Britain in the EEC even though she despised it.

She also was not afraid to stand up to Ronald Reagan when it was needed.

I can guarantee that Boris will secretly harbour fantasies - quite wrongly - that in 30 years time we will be erecting statues of him outside parliament. When the real truth is his name is already a byword for staggering incompetence on a monumental scale.

Absolutely agree. Agree with your comment above too.

The Tory party had plenty of talented one nation Tory’s who would have done a better job.

Boris wasn’t even a Brexiteer. He switched alliance for his moment in the sun. And the. Royally fucked us all over.

SerendipityJane · 22/11/2025 11:20

Boris wasn’t even a Brexiteer

That is probably what will finally damn him in history. If he had genuinely believed in it, and convinced others he did, then some would have forgiven him.

But trading baby lives to pursue a path he knew was doomed to failure ? That is hell and damnation. Fire and brimstone.

Who knows, in Novembers to come "Penny for the Boris" might mark a revival of the long practised English custom of burning absolute cunts in effigy,.

ilovesooty · 22/11/2025 11:59

He wrote two articles - one arguing the case for Brexit and one against and decided which one to submit when he saw which way the wind was blowing. Johnson doesn't believe in anything. He's fundamentally self serving and that's why he should never have been PM.

He wrote two articles

And they were both shit.

Just listened to the News Agents interview with Kenneth Clark, it’s a very sobering reality check illustrating how decent politicians used to be. Worth a listen if anyone fancies it.

There was a burning effigy of him, urinating on a pile of newspapers at Lewes Bonfire night in 2019.

I am currently reading Pale Rider by Laura Spinney, it looks at the Spanish Flu Pandemic at the end of WW1. Reading about the scientific work since then is very apt at this time.

Looking at the Government’s handling of key decisions in the light of it, it is very clear that they were not “following the science” unless it agreed with what they wanted to do anyway.

They took the decision to reduce our pandemic preparedness during the years of Tory austerity as well as making poor decisions and shovelling billions of pounds into their mates’ pockets. I hope there will be justice one day.

A good interview. I imagine Kruger is a pleasant enough sort. Unfortunately he confirms my worst suspicions re his stance on feminism, family values, birth rates and meddling with abortion legislation (and no doubt buffer zones).

I also disagree with the premise that he was a Tory heavyweight. On that note I’ll listen to the Ken Clarke interview at some point this weekend. Don’t share his politics but he’s always interesting & thoughtful.
