Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

Top tip for knitters/crocheters/seemstresses - you can still indulge in your favourite snacks and keep your hands clean by using chopsticks 😳.

Take a babybel and eat the cheese.

Place the two halves of the red wax coating over your ears. Your ears will be protected from the rain and any solar activity, whilst your bones will be strengthened.

TheMainlySilentFrog · 23/11/2025 23:33

I think some of these tips have come straight fromViz! 🤣🤣

Maggiebell · 24/11/2025 05:31

I know same if these tips come from Viz and are giving me a good laugh, I've even got the Viz top of the tips book because of this thread. Good fun and also some of the legit tips on here are very helpful.👍

If you want your housework basically done. Pretend you have visitors coming in an hour or two. You'll be surprised at how much you get done. It makes you way more efficient. Then relax with a cuppa ☕🫖😊

Save money on binoculars by standing closer to the viewpoint.

Save money on a doorbell by sitting in your doorway 24hours a day, 365 days a year.

Why is babybel associated with Christmas?

Because of the baby cheeses.

(Sorry, not a tip).

Viz tips:

DON'T waste money on expensive iPods. Simply think of your favourite tune and hum it. If you want to "switch tracks", simply think of another song you like and hum that instead.

PREVENT burglars stealing everything in the house by moving everything into your bedroom when you go to bed. In the morning, move it all back again.

😂😂😂

That's true, it probably is like the old way! Ya, I suppose u could do it the old way too. I could try look for a heavier top blanket. Im quite short and I hate changing duvet covers, especially the king size bed!! Feels like a workout!

This is why I asked "what's wrong with sheets?" but apparently they're more work than laying two empty duvet covers 🤨

OP already has duvet covers but might not have flat sheets. Obviously sheets would be just as good, if not better because they are bigger, but if you only have a duvet cover, that would be fine.

Scissors to cut pizza

PyongyangKipperbang · 25/11/2025 17:09

I agree it is a great tip. But only if your teenager

a) uses the right scissors, the ones from the kitchen not a pair they took from the "bits and bobs" drawer
b) washes the fucking things afterwards
c) doesnt just put them back as they are

because otherwise you end up with what I got....pizza covered wrapping paper. 😡

5 mins ago on Mumsnet I read that you can microwave a whole swede for about 25 mins, then just scoop out the soft flesh.

🤯

Do you have to prick it or anything? I’d be scared of it exploding.

SingtotheCat · 25/11/2025 22:51

An empty cigar tube filled with angry bees makes and excellent emergency vibrator when caught short.

aWeeCornishPastie · 26/11/2025 07:05

@Daisypopp88i can confirm your carrier bag idea to unblock the toilet does indeed work. I done it last year and just binned the bag and of course wore gloves

NebulousProfessorSupportPostcard · 22/11/2025 22:11

@DeanStockwell@Autumngirl5@Nicii I have both those boxes. The cracker box is from Betterware and has a blue insert for (Jacobs square cream-) crackers, but is currently in the fridge with cucumber in it 😂

The long bacon box is either Lakeland or Betterware, and is on my worktable holding long clock hands until I fix my clock.

Haven't eaten crackers in years, and eat bacon so quickly it doesn't need a special box to keep it fresh!

You are all far to organised and I am jealous 😃

You will also look like Rudolfs half brother/ sister.

WHOEVER POSTED ABOUT MAKING SURE THE LABEL IS IN THE CORNER WHEN CHANGING THE DUVET... THANKYOU, IT WAS A BELTER TIP AND SAVED ME FROM FIGHTING WITH THE DUVET FOR HALF AN HOUR.
YOU ARE A LEGEND!!! 👏 🌟 🙌

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 26/11/2025 21:07

Ya, all I have is fitted sheets these days. I found them easier than the flat ones

hollyblueivy · 27/11/2025 07:33

If anyone has any amazing life hacks for being less of a worry wart - please do share!

Maggiebell · 27/11/2025 07:41

Does anyone know how to soften my DM boots. I've had them about 20 years and only worn them a few times because they are so uncomfortable.

You can treat them with a light oil. I don't think it is often done these days, you can get tack oil from places that supply equestrians, old fashioned cobblers will sell one, possibly neats foot oil. I use Hydrophane tack oil. It is unusual in not darkening the weather, even if it is light tan. Most oils darken it to the tobacco or chocolate colour. You can probably buy small quantities of leather oil online.

I have never tried it, but I expect even cooking oil would work. People have been oiling leather to soften it for thousands of years. Some oils oxidise and turn to gum then varnish, linseed oil does that, which is fine on wood but not what you want on boots.

Wipe off excess oil that has not soaked in after a few hours. Any patches that still seem dry you can treat again,
