Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

Ooo might just try that!

Keepingthingsinteresting · 15/11/2025 20:51

What kind of spray @Janboree ? Do you mean an aerosol like impulse?

Mulledjuice · 15/11/2025 20:58

Hold a spoon (concave side down) between tap and wire colander when rinsing the latter. Works beautifully

YelramBob · 15/11/2025 21:01

Today I discovered that a spray for cleaning swimming pool scumlines is great for removing baked-on pigeon shit from your windscreen. Have to rinse well afterwards though as the spray contains caustic soda.

You're welcome 😅

It’s a bottle of clear liquid with a pump spray ‘Laura Ashley Body Mist Heritage Bloom’ @Keeping things It’s an old one I was trying to use up. Probably is discontinued as Laura Ashley is no more sadly.
I should say I tried it out on some cheap glasses first to make sure it was ok. I don’t know about using it if you have some expensive glasses with anti smear/ glare stuff on the lenses. However, opticians spray is mainly alcohol as is body mist so I would think it would be ok.

5 mins ago on Mumsnet I read that you can microwave a whole swede for about 25 mins, then just scoop out the soft flesh.

🤯

GooseyGandalf · 15/11/2025 21:04

@OvenChick Is that a mind blown emoji or a turnip head?

OvenChick · 15/11/2025 21:06

@GooseyGandalf Swede head blown apart in microwave.

GellerYeller · 15/11/2025 21:06

If you are struggling to open a new jar, tap the edges of the lid-once and fairly hard- on opposite sides, with a wooden spoon, and it will unscrew easily. I’m sure I saw this on Instagram, someone unlikely like Jo Whiley. It works for me though!

Ukholidaysaregreat · 15/11/2025 21:10

Baby grow vests pull down. Especially handy when pooey. Read that on here. Good tip. Another jar lid one. Hold the jar in the steam from a kettle. The steam heats up the metal lid which expands and then it will unscrew easily.

Jk987 · 15/11/2025 21:10

If your child had stuck stickers all over the window and you can’t pick them off, put a hairdryer to them to warm the adhesive and they’ll cone off easily.

Janboree · 15/11/2025 21:12

New life hack just discovered here that you can use 🤯 emoji to denote an exploding swede head. 🫢

Yet another jar lid hack - use a can opener to lift the lid until the seal is broken. Then the lid will be easy to open. I've been doing it for years and it's never failed me yet. Don't wrench the lid off with the can opener, it's just to break the seal.

Which body mist and what do you do, use a wipe, or a tissue as well?

Janboree · 15/11/2025 21:20

Brilliant @GellerYelleralthough DH will be gutted as it makes him feel really manly when I have to ask him to open a jar. Ah well, power to the wooden spoon! 🤭

Another jar hack. Wrap an elastic band around the lid. It will unscrew much easier.

dry shampoo works much better if applied the night before.

stretch shoes by putting plastic bags in them (check for holes!) filling with water then freezing. At the water expands into ice it lightly stretches the shoe. Works wonders with docs. Don’t do this with suede though!

It's ok, i saw your post after, saying what it was.

Janboree · 15/11/2025 21:25

Scroll back to my post at 21.01 @Netcurtainnelly I just used the body mist spray with a piece of kitchen paper towel to wipe clean.

@OvenChickit will be the most delicious swede you've ever tasted. You won't even need butter!

Vaguelyclassical · 15/11/2025 21:25

Does anybody else dislike the word "hack" and yearn, nostalgically, for the word "tip"?

shellyleppard · 15/11/2025 21:26

A wooden spoon across a saucepan stops it boiling over

Or just hold the colander sideways and rinse from the top edge down.

Blueberryme · 15/11/2025 21:38

Realised this when I lived in another country that had no CH so the winter mornings could be really cold - after a shower and washing my hair I would put my dressing gown on, and then I’d dry my hair with the bedroom door closed so that the hairdryer really took the chill off the room. So much more comfortable to get dressed, do makeup in etc.

This has never worked for me 😭
