Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

@DeanStockwell I suggested this earlier and was shot down at such a stupid suggestion as to put them outside 🤣

Mind you, they’d be frozen solid in my neck of the woods tonight.

My hiccup remedy never fails and it’s so simple. You ask everyone to wait for the next hiccup. It never comes. It feels a bit silly with everyone staring at you in silence but the trick is it gets the sufferer breathing very gently and that allows their diaphragm which is in spasm to fall back in sync.

No no, the remedy for hiccups is to drink a large glass of water while someone firmly presses/covers your ears with their hands. Something about the pressure.

Nah we are right , definitely.
Some pp have said they will get darked on and spider willies but I am a rebel I leave washing out overnight regularly.
Mind you you are right anything left outside tonight will frezze

Or.....just make the bed the old way, with bottom sheet, top sheet, blanket(s). Eiderdown in winter (aka - coverless duvet).

I don't understand the function of an empty duvet cover here, let alone two.

Thank you, I was struggling to make sense of the empty duvet cover and like you thinking just go back to pre duvet arrangements. Sheets, blankets and a bedspread. Bit of candlewick if you are feeling very nostalgic.

Tell him to be very careful. I know someone wearing slippers using that stuff (with gauntlet style gloves on to be safe!) and didn't notice some dripped onto their foot when doing it until much later. They thought they just had an itchy foot until they took off their socks. Very very long story short they ended up with toes being amputated.

If that stuff drips on hands, arms, jeans, soaks through footwear etc it can cause very nasty chemical burns if not immediately washed off. I wouldn't have it in my house.

Crikey that's not good. Mr TF wears marigolds and trainers but, as I said, he treats it like a biological hazard zone. He does like a clean oven though. He also likes defrosting the freezer, it's a compulsion!

We could go my mums way I suppose - her oven is like new as in the 4 years she has been in the house she has never used it. There's a top tip!

Not so long ago I was told that the wire cage that goes over sparking wine/ Prosecco/Cava/ Champagne etc is to help remove the cork(not just to keep the cork from popping off). You loosen then grip the cage (best with a tea towel) and turn it and the cork comes out easily. Tried it and it works! Am I the only one that did not realise this and spent years trying to wedge off Prosecco corks (not an euphemism) ?

The crisps hack is the best one I've read so far...🤣

Nothing. I was just trying to point out that if you didn't want to bother putting the duvet in its cover, you could just use the duvet and cover separately and there was no need to buy a separate 'washable blanket' as one poster suggested.

Coverless duvets are great.

My fave top tip is one i found recently. After years of cucumbers going mushy before they get used...get a plastic food box, wash new cucumber, line box with a couple squares of kitchen roll, cucumber in box and lid on. Lasts for days and days. Its changed my life...lol

I like the idea of this but where do you find a food box that long enough for a cucumber? And doesn't it take up a lot of fridge space ?

We need Lakeland or betterware (sp?) To come up with a oblong box that will fit a cucumber in , with it split in two across the middle with one side been a few millimetres bigger than the other so as we use the cucumber the box can be slid into itself getting smaller as we use more cucumber.

If anyone makes this now , I want the royalties.

I have an old ‘Tupperware’ box for crackers that is long enough!

😂😂😂😂

But how did you get covered in juice? If you cut across the equator and invert it they just pop out.

Didn’t work for me either. It did seem to be a ridiculously hard orange though (or possibly I’m just a weakling) 🤔

Same here I’m afraid. I extracted a lot of juice but the halves didn’t invert cleanly nor did the segments separate. I’m thinking this works for clementines maybe but not for oranges, at least not for me.

My method for peeling oranges is four cuts north, south, east and west from top to bottom, then peel those sections off. If there’s an easier way, I’m all ears.

@Redheadedstepchild

“To avoid large packets of crisps going stale, eat the whole packet in one sitting.”

Best tip so far.

This has always worked well for me.

Mine was an old long plastic box...i think it was originally sold to keep bacon in. There must be some still sold. High Q is the make.

I’ve just realised I have a box like this! I use it to sort random bits because I had no idea what to use it for. Thank you!

That's true, it probably is like the old way! Ya, I suppose u could do it the old way too. I could try look for a heavier top blanket. Im quite short and I hate changing duvet covers, especially the king size bed!! Feels like a workout!

is there any reason why you can't cut the cucumber in halves?

Franpie · 22/11/2025 21:09

GripGetter · 18/11/2025 11:25

No way! I have to try this.

An old lady did a similar trick to my DD on the tube. She said to her “I’ll give you £5 the next time you hiccup”. Everyone was waiting for to hiccup again and it never came.

& @Nicii it sounds like you both have a good solution, I am jealous now.

NebulousProfessorSupportPostcard · 22/11/2025 22:11

@DeanStockwell@Autumngirl5@Nicii I have both those boxes. The cracker box is from Betterware and has a blue insert for (Jacobs square cream-) crackers, but is currently in the fridge with cucumber in it 😂

The long bacon box is either Lakeland or Betterware, and is on my worktable holding long clock hands until I fix my clock.

Haven't eaten crackers in years, and eat bacon so quickly it doesn't need a special box to keep it fresh!

Maxiebaby0 · 22/11/2025 22:19

For tubes of moisturiser, face wash or anything else… when you can’t squeeze out any more cut the tube across about half way down. There will be loads of product left, and you can trim down the top of the tube to fit back on and close it. Hope that makes sense!

Netcurtainnelly · 23/11/2025 13:01

No ice packs to hand or want extra. Free a bottle of water, it will act as an extra ice pack and then a drink.
