Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

It works in the same way as a ring light - illuminating your face, reducing shadows - also when I see myself now in the mini screen when I'm on a zoom call I feel I look nicer and imo that makes me more confident. What's not to like!

Surely this only works on your own device and doesn't make you look any younger at the other end?

I actually do the oposte when I'm on teams. I'm quite pale and realised that a very bright screen shining at my face makes me look like a shiny ghost! A din screen is much more forgiving on my wrinkles!

This sounds like the voice of experience 😀.

Doesn't it just? "Ask me how I know!"

Yesterday, my husband thought he saw a cockroach in the kitchen. He sprayed everything down and cleaned everywhere. Today, I'm putting the cockroach in the bathroom.... (a tip from X)

Love this thread.

i once spilt a glass of red wine over my favourite cream top. Put it in the washing machine with a dishwasher tablet rather than a washing tablet. Came out perfect.

Mistyglade · 12/12/2025 23:33

Amazing thread.

GripGetter · 18/12/2025 22:04

Great thread!
I did something hackworthy just last night. Needed to add eggs to something in a hurry, so I cracked them into the pan and didn't scrape out every drop from the shells with a teaspoon like I usually do. I set the shells aside, went back to them later and scraped them out into a little lidded container. And lo, I now have egg wash handy for my next baking experiment this week!

Beesandhoney123 · 21/12/2025 07:08

I use nivea on all my leather goods. They love it!

Re worrying, yes to making a list and keeping it on the list if you can't do anything about it. Revist the list whenever you like and a solution may have become apparent. Or you may have a bit of a solution. I use a pen and pad because it's more real somehow.

I still love a proper real calendar. The dc think I'm ancient, but we like seeing plans and not having mess about on my phone, check if dh has accepted anything or indeed even checked. Its on rhe calendar.

Makes things easier when booking things, everyone uses the calendar we can all see on the wall. Better for remembering too.

Condition your hair first then shampoo. It gives me an extra 1-2 days between washes.

Have come back to the thread to thank @TangyJellyTot for this: I have been doing it since they suggested it and it has definitely made my life simpler!

Hairspray works just as well. The alcohol lifts the ink. Just be sure to wipe it off quickly though.

Going to search the thread to see if anyone has a remove-toothpaste-stain-from-hoodie tip
(happened on the first day I wore the bloody thing!)

Prior to CH I used my hairdryer on my bed to warm it up before getting in.

Doesn't work half as well as a hot water bottle.

One part white vinegar and two parts water solution is recommended on toothpaste stains. Soak a corner of a clean cloth and dab the stain (don’t rub). Leave for two minutes then dab with a dry cloth.

Thanks so much @Janboree !

GameofPhones · 23/03/2026 10:40

Frustrated by the length of time it takes for hot water to flow through into my bathroom, I hit on the idea of keeping a compact hot water urn in there for handwashing. Filled with two kettlesful of boiling water per day, it works great. Plus they are cheaper to buy than I expected (around £20). I am saving time and lots of wasted water.

Curlygirl06 · 23/03/2026 12:09

This is a long term tip re grandchildren. When I had my grandson first, he used to sit in my space at the table, which then became "his space". I had him a lot when he was little, good times.

My granddaughter was a covid baby so didn't have her so much, but when I had her regularly, she sat in granddad's chair. Her brother was at school by then so I only had the pair of them in the school holidays. NO ARGUMENTS ABOUT WHICH CHAIR IS WHICH. Admittedly this is a long game but blimey, I'm glad I did. One of them sat in the others space the other day, OMG it was like WW3!

5 mins ago on Mumsnet I read that you can microwave a whole swede for about 25 mins, then just scoop out the soft flesh.

🤯

Yum!

PigletJohn · 23/03/2026 22:08

KilliMonjaro · 23/03/2026 22:01

Yum!

I tried that, but the layer under the skin seemed tough and overdone (at first I thought it was undercooked and tough) so a lot of wastage.

I just wash my hands in cold water. Problem solved.

The "hack" is, don't let gcs sit in exactly the same seat even when there's only one of them there, as it prevents arguments when they're both there!
That's how I read it anyway
