Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

Ordinary hair spray gets biro marks out of fabric.

Those giant plastic clothes pegs people use on the beach to stop their towels blowing away are brilliant if you need to change larger duvet covers single handed. Feed one bottom corner of duvet into cover corner, secure with a peg, repeat other side, then with tops, give a really good shake, button up.
Mine cost about £3.99 from Amazon.

The "hack" is, don't let gcs sit in exactly the same seat even when there's only one of them there, as it prevents arguments when they're both there!
That's how I read it anyway

Ah I see!

I just wash my hands in cold water. Problem solved.

Cold water doesn't get your hands fully clean, and certainly not your nails when you brush them. I noticed the nails difference with hot water straight away.

Nothing ignites fury in a toddler than when their sibling is sitting in "their" chair! Unless you've given them the wrong cup/ plate/ cutlery, whole other issue there.

Something I inadvertently discovered was that having something to fidget in one hand while on a stressful/boring phone call (difficult relative) can help you to keep patience.

Allthesnowallthetime · 30/03/2026 18:43

@GameofPhones that's a great idea!

This one's a bit gruesome, but having struggled to find a decent in-shower body exfoliator THAT ACTUALLY DOES ANYTHING, I have discovered that Aldi silicone scouring sponges (designed to clean kitchen/bathroom surfaces) is the absolutely ideal combination of softness and abrasion. The soft sponge side, not the harder textured side.

I actually saw these and thought about using them in the shower! Might try and get some next time I go :)

They are brilliant!! They are flexible, and the silicone sponge sticks to your skin without ripping it off completely 🫣 It's a very satisfying sensation, sort of rough and soft all at once!

Ohhh!!! I just thought of another thing I discovered last night. I made a crumble with apple and rhubarb, and wanted to take the tartness out of the rhubarb without adding sugar. I stirred a small sachet of strawberry sugar-free jelly powder into the fruit mix while it was still on the hob. Apart from making the fruit taste delicious, this helps it all to set nicely before you add the crumble topping 🤓

ChocolateCinderToffee · 30/03/2026 21:29

I can't imagine dumping a load of nasty UPFs into a crumble. If you don't want to use so much sugar, replace half the rhubarb with eating apples.

I don't care. It was delicious. The only really dangerous thing I suppose was the plutonium I used to bring the pan to the boil quickly. I'm rather an impatient cook.

Or use honey!

DH has diabetes, so we are keeping sugars down.

We were pleased with the results and we are both still breathing, so win-win!

One random travel hack I learnt from renting cars: watch the fuel policy (full-to-full is safest), and take a quick video of the car when you pick it up to avoid any “mystery damage” charges later. Saved me a lot of hassle!
