Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

If you cut a v in the top of any frozen food bags you can tie it and stop spilling things in the freezer, works wonders with peas!

will try this. Thank you

If you have a blocked toilet, tie a plastic carrier bag around a plunger and plunge the toilet and it will unblock (you then just discard the carrier bag by pulling it inside out) I'd advise using rubber gloves to do that part just incase it's a bit trickier to remove the bag!

And if you don't own a plunger, a carrier bag over a mop head works just as well!

My favourite Viz tip was that a few angry wasps in an old cigar tube make an inexpensive vibrator

I will try this.

If you do not have a glacé cherry then just paint a grape with red nail varnish.

Make Parmesan last longer by mixing it with dandruff.

You could add some ear wax to the Parmesan as well😂

I prep and freeze (and label!) almost everything left over that I could conceivably want for another meal. Three wrinkly garlic cloves, half an onion, bacon drippings poured out of the grill tray, egg whites, tons of reduced ginger root, all the mushrooms DH buys but never eats, a lonely chili left going wrinkly in the fridge. I’ll use them eventually.

I buy a lot of reduced food and prep it when I have the energy. Some days I can face slicing, grilling and freezing a dozen aubergines, and those days seldom match the days I want to eat them.

I also want homemade chicken soup when I'm ill, but I won’t have the energy to make it. So I have tubs of chicken stock, bags of cooked diced chicken, all the flavourings ready to go. Even sliced omelette strips. Then they can be tipped into a pan, chilli flakes according to how little I can taste.

Against them. So around the equator, rather than north to south.

This has the added benefit of pre-cutting them in half too. It's so beautiful I can't believe I didn't know about it for 4 decades

Edited

I love this, trying it tomorrow. With added benefit of spotting hidden pips!

Oh no! That must have been very panic inducing.

I did this once, moved the glass slightly wrongly and smashed the thing to 100 million pieces. On the 22nd dec

Baby grow vests pull down. Especially handy when pooey. Read that on here. Good tip. Another jar lid one. Hold the jar in the steam from a kettle. The steam heats up the metal lid which expands and then it will unscrew easily.

I love the baby gro one - it was the only piece of unsolicited advice I found useful 😁

Yes! AND it makes it so easy to take in a packed lunch - just slice it in half, put the halves together for transport to keep juicy, then flip when you're ready to eat. Delish! Can't wait for you to try it.

CJsGoldfish · 16/11/2025 20:37

For opening jars, I have an OXO good grips jar opener. Life changing.
Have had it for years and years and it has never let me down, opens any sucker with ease.
I can see they've updated the design so assume it works just as well

DRIVERS: Avoid getting prosecuted for using your phone while driving. Simply pop your mobile inside a large shell and the police will think you are listening to the sea.

Expired credit cards are perfect for plastering in small holes in walls and achieving an almost flat finish which requires less sanding.
They’re also very good at chipping off burnt on food in saucepans and oven trays.

I have an expired one that lives with my dishwashing liquid 😆
Fabulous for getting off anything stuck to dishes, benches, jars. Not much it can't get off, but fabulous for labels. A much better use than the usual one. For me anyway 😂

Alwaytired44 · 16/11/2025 20:47

if you accidentally write on a white board with permanent marker, go over it with a dry wipe marker and the permanent marker will simply rub off!

“To avoid large packets of crisps going stale, eat the whole packet in one sitting.”

Best tip so far.

100%.

Re the microwaved suede/turnip - do I need to cut the ‘lid’ off first?

Doesn’t the house stink of turnip afterwards?

I love turnip so am very tempted to try this.

You have to pierce it all over with a sharp knife.

I watched a video of someone baking crumble the other day. Instead of spending ages rubbing in the butter to make the crumble, they just quickly stirred melted butter into their ready measured flour and sugar! It made a nice knobbly looking crumble.
This is a totally amazing revelation to me that I’m excited to try.

Absolutely love this tip! For some reason I cannot make crumble - it just doesn’t happen

That would be alcohol in the perfume, presumably?

By the same principle, hand sanitiser can remove pen stains from fabrics.

If you peel the negative space off a sticker sheet first, little ones can get the stickers off on their own.

I bet you do, you just dont know that other people dont know them!

Loads of things I have learned over the years that the people I learned them from simply assumed that everyone already knew!

Like using a potato peeler to slice cheese. So much easier!

Ex teacher here and I can confirm that this works.
