Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

Nipple balm is great for dry lips.

Cornflour applied with a make-up brush = dry shampoo.

Day cream + baking powder = foaming facial scrub.

Does anybody else dislike the word "hack" and yearn, nostalgically, for the word "tip"?

Me!!!!!

Or just bang the edge of the jam jar lid on the side of a table.

Hand sanitiser gets turmeric stains out of a cheapy laminate worktop.

Something I read on Mumsnet a while ago: Always use a jam spoon. Sticking a knife into the jar of jam risks transmitting the breadcrumbs from your toast into the jam and that is why your jam turns mouldy.

To avoid large packets of crisps going stale, eat the whole packet in one sitting.

Hahaha
love the tip about the crisps! Will deffo be trying that …..

I don’t suppose anyone has a tip for cleaning oven racks? I hate scrubbing them.

I use wire wool so it’s not that difficult, but surely there must be a quicker way!

I have someone come out and clean my oven, not cheap but worth it.

If you collect your child from school and they have had an accident. Just put the plastic beg you are handed in the washing machine. The washing will take the clothes out of the bag.

I prep and freeze (and label!) almost everything left over that I could conceivably want for another meal. Three wrinkly garlic cloves, half an onion, bacon drippings poured out of the grill tray, egg whites, tons of reduced ginger root, all the mushrooms DH buys but never eats, a lonely chili left going wrinkly in the fridge. I’ll use them eventually.

I buy a lot of reduced food and prep it when I have the energy. Some days I can face slicing, grilling and freezing a dozen aubergines, and those days seldom match the days I want to eat them.

I also want homemade chicken soup when I'm ill, but I won’t have the energy to make it. So I have tubs of chicken stock, bags of cooked diced chicken, all the flavourings ready to go. Even sliced omelette strips. Then they can be tipped into a pan, chilli flakes according to how little I can taste.

You are an amazing organiser! I mean to do that all the time and end up throwing things away.... I keep and keep and keep them in the fridge, meaning to do what you do, and they end up rotten.... Well done you!

That's a tip from Anthea Turner: Perfect Housewife" that ran on BBC Three from 2006-2007. I remember the episode well.

I still fold my towels how Anthea taught me

And potentially tear/break up and knacker your washing machine! Its your childs piss not nuclear waste, fairly sure its safe to handle!

If you get beetroot juice on your clothes, tablecloth (if anyone still uses these) etc rub salt into the stain and it will wash out. My mum’s tip.

I wish I had known this in the 80s when I ruined my brand new dress…

Might have to buy a copy of Viz to see if they still do their top tips. I remember one

Instead of spending lots of money on a personalised number plate, simply do a deed poll to change your name to match your car's reg.
Mr HT52BPY, Lancs

No idea why that quote is there! Sorry!

Edited

hahaha love the car number plate tip

Three travel tips:

  1. Packing cubes, treat each one like a drawer. I have one for each of socks, underpants, bras, tops, pants, pyjamas.
  2. Don't use ziplock bags to put liquids in, use plastic wrap. Take off the lid, put a little plastic wrap over the top, screw lid back on. The plastic wrap acts like a gasket and prevents leaking when air pressure changes in the hold of an aircraft expand the liquid.
  3. Use differently looking small cosmetic bags etc. to pack all your non clothing stuff. Group stuff logically and a different bag to put it in. Keeps things obvious and organised. But choose little bags that are thin and light to keep weight down.

Today I discovered that a spray for cleaning swimming pool scumlines is great for removing baked-on pigeon shit from your windscreen. Have to rinse well afterwards though as the spray contains caustic soda.

You're welcome 😅

Great tip.

Had a really good belly laugh about this one.

Seriously. I koiw just how difficult baked pigeon poo can be to remove off any kind if glass.

If you have chunky wool knitwear, and you're willing to do some handwashing, give it a final oil rinse after your Woolite or whatever. Lukewarm water, spoonful of olive oil. Swish the water really well, so the oil droplets are tiny, and then drop in the woollens. Swirl them around, drain, dry. NB real wool only - doesn't do anything for acrylic.

Hold a spoon (concave side down) between tap and wire colander when rinsing the latter. Works beautifully

Eh?

Bizarrely, I now react horribly to most lip balms, except for blue Vaseline and Lansinoh nipple balm! And Lansinoh has much better staying power.

5 mins ago on Mumsnet I read that you can microwave a whole swede for about 25 mins, then just scoop out the soft flesh.

🤯

Bl*dy hll, the kitchen must smell lovely after that.

Left over, or past - their - best lemons? Cut into quarters and freeze. Use them frozen in a G and T so they flavour and cool your drink without diluting it.

It helps to make you waterproof.

Marks left by hot drinks being placed directly on wooden surfaces can be got rid of with a dry tea towel and a steam iron on full blast. The tea towel will be trashed but the rings will disappear. I bravely did this with a fancy Laura Ashley coffee table which had several white marks from hot dishes. I’ve also treated the arms of an oak futon sofa bed where DS had been resting his morning cuppa.

Line salad drawers with kitchen roll. Stuff stays fresh and if you have a mouldy cucumber you can just gather up the kitchen roll and bung it in the bin, no mess

I've got visions of the last one removing several layers of skin.

Why would you want a facial scrub to foam?!

JustLikeThat647 · 16/11/2025 23:39

Another jar lid one - boil about a cup’s worth of water in the kettle and, once boiled, pour it into a mug, pop the jar lid-down into the mug and wait for about 5 minutes. Take the jar out and it should unscrew pretty easily.

And one for if you need softened butter, but prefer keeping your butter in the fridge so it’s always rock-hard. Boil the kettle and pour the boiled water into a mug, let it sit for a couple of minutes and pour it all out. Then turn the mug upside down, pop however much butter (still in its wrapping) you need into the mug, and wait for about 5-10 minutes, by which time the heat from the mug will have softened the butter nicely.

Oooh also - if you have any water rings on wooden tables, dab some mayonnaise all around the ring and leave it on for 10-15 minutes, then wipe it off, and the water ring will have dispoeard.
