Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

To find a whole new wardrobe of clothes turn the ironing pile over.

Tie microfibre cloths over your shoes and dance in the kitchen to clean the floor.

Lhasaapso · 16/11/2025 18:29

If you get beetroot juice on your clothes, tablecloth (if anyone still uses these) etc rub salt into the stain and it will wash out. My mum’s tip.

Someone on another forum shared this - open painkiller boxes the end that doesnt have the date in- should avoid getting the end that has the leaflet wrapped around it

And for all those teachers out there, hand sanitizer does a great job on the whiteboard.

A friend told me she uses hand sanitiser to cure athlete’s foot. Luckily not had to try it myself.

MummyMags3 · 16/11/2025 18:38

@OvenChick I have been told that if you microwave a butternut squash for a few minutes it makes it very easy to peel. I have not tried this myself.

VikingLady · 16/11/2025 18:38

I keep hair bobbles and sellotape in the kitchen to reveal packets and hold them closed. Especially pasta.

"balance over bowel" best typo ever.

In my defense I had re-typed that bit so many times trying to describe what I meant, but it is rather a good one isn't it😂

For jars you can't open - turn jar upside down and put a screwdriver or knife in a gap inside the rim (next to the bit where the lid and jar meet) & twist the knife/screwdriver. It breaks the air lock. Turn jar the right way and open. Works every time.

Yes or you can use a teaspoon to do the same thing.

Baby oil easily removes chewing gum from hair

Works on old fashioned nightlatches, but not on British Standard nightlatches or on deadlocks.

Good thing, too.

Edited

Thanks P John.

I took my oven door off once to clean in between the two glass panels, but OMG 😳 I couldn’t get it back on! I was almost crying! Took me ages, but eventually managed in the end. Never again! 🤣

Oh no! That must have been very panic inducing.

That's got to be one of life's great mysteries?
Why is is easy to take something apart
But not to put back together.

My laundry basket for carrying wet washing into the garden lives in the kitchen, so I use clothes pegs for the same thing - and they're right there!

If you have a fruit fly infestation (due to leaving a bag of carrots in a bag and forgetting them for a month at the height of summer 😱) half an inch of red wine in the bottom of a bottle will attract and drown them.

Bonus if you are arguing with your husband about which wine tastes better - keep half an inch in a sealed bottle until both are available and count how many flies are in each bottle in the morning by pouring out through a tea strainer.

We finish our bottles of wine, so I put 1tbsp apple cider vinegar, 2tbsp water and a drop of washing up liquid in a jamjar next to the fruit bowl and that does the same job.

Cut an orange in half and pop each half inside out to release the segments. Easy peasy, no peel under the fingernails and it takes all the pith off too.

I learned this last year and I love it more than is reasonable.

Should probably add this is best on satsumas and Clementines. Proper big oranges it probably would be less effective

Which way? Against the segs or with them?

Which way? Against the segs or with them?

Against them. So around the equator, rather than north to south.

This has the added benefit of pre-cutting them in half too. It's so beautiful I can't believe I didn't know about it for 4 decades

gingerninja · 16/11/2025 19:33

make a paste of bicarbonate of soda and washing up liquid and paint thickly onto grease marks on clothes, leave for a bit then run through the machine on a normal wash. Works an absolute treat.

I don’t have a working hob at the moment, plus I always found it hit and miss getting the eggs just right in boiling water.

To stop eggshell from cracking make a pinprick hole in one end using....a pin!
Then put the egg(s) in cold water in a pan and bring it up to the boil. Then put a lid on the pan and switch off the heat. Leave for ten minutes before rinsing in cold water: perfect hard boiled eggs.

It also works brilliantly on random stains on upholstery and carpets (test somewhere inconspicuous first) but it’s gotten weird marks out of our playroom carpet that couldn’t be shifted with carpet shampoo

And also works to remove odours from stinky trainers/shoes/boots. Spray liberally inside and leave to dry fully The alcohol kills any bacteria/fungi and the effects last ages. Use at least 70% isopropyl alcohol.

When living in a foreign country and attempting to host a lovely dinner party for your new foreign friends but you can't get the right ingredients, or proper equipment to make your native cuisine quite right, a useful phrase is:

"Well, it varies from region to region."

If they are still suspicious:

"This is how we really cook at home."

They don't care and they will be off to the all night pizza and burger van anyway as soon as the torture is over. They love you for your little heart that shines.

Tell them it's called "Toad in the Hole" and let them use Google translate....

That's my tried and tested method also. Except I don't pinprick the eggs and leave for 9 minutes after turning the heat off. Never fails.

I suspect it depends slightly on the size of your eggs.

wantom · 16/11/2025 19:47

I make a quick version of egg mayo by cracking the eggs in a non stick pan, mixing them with a spatula similar to scrambling, leave them on the heat a tad longer than I would for soft scrambled. Put on cold plate, cool down completely. Tip into bowl and add mayo, spring onions etc. mix with fork. Done in under ten minutes and no boiling, cooling down under running cold water, shell removal, mashing etc.

I prefer it that way myself as I'm not a lover of hard cooked egg white. This way it's all mixed up and end up mostly yolky! Just my method..
