I felt particularly sad about Jeremy Hardy who I loved and also Terry Hall.

Oh Terry Hall too- I met him once and he was fabulous- such a loss

I think I took “never got over” to mean someone you still think about and think about their death, rather than literally unable to function as a result of their death.

Yes like when you hear their song on the radio it makes you think it was sad they died earlier than they should have rather then not being able to function since…

Peaches Geldof, Kurt Cobain - any sudden death where they have left a baby behind really affects me.

I don’t grieve the deaths of people I never met. To do so seems at best to be disrespectful to their actual loved ones. And at worst to be cynical attention-seeking or empty insincere virtue-signalling.

That said, it’s always saddening to see people whose talents or work you admire taken before their time. Ayrton Senna & George Michael being obvious examples.

How is it virtue signalling to think it's sad that someone died? I think it's virtue signalling to say virtue signalling to everything. It's just such a meaningless phrase.

Holluschickie · 13/11/2025 20:35

I really don't spend my life weeping over Naya Rivera or Robin Williams. I just think they died very tragically and pointlessly.

The Specials were my boyhood heroes, never got to see them live as they broke up a month before they were due to play at my home city.

For me its Sinèad O'Connor. Can't explain why but felt suprisingly bereft at her sudden passing.

Michael Mosley. It was just so unthinkable. And being missing for a period of time was just heartbreaking for his family. Same goes for Julian Sands.

He was the first that came to mind for me too.
so brilliant in Friday Night Dinner.

SoftBalletShoes · 13/11/2025 20:40

Princess Diana. It was SO sudden, and she was so young, and it was all for the lack of a seatbelt. I've always thought it was a short enough distance that she just didn't bother, although her sister said she was usually a stickler for seatbelts. But they are fiddly and annoying in the dark. I expect she thought it would be OK. Just a seatbelt click between life and death. So tragic. (Crash experts said she'd have survived if wearing a seatbelt, since her side of the car was not crumpled and her chest injury was because she hit the seat in front.) She used to be everywhere, in the papers the whole time, for years, and sometimes I still can't believe it happened.
