I sometimes think about Jade Goody and what a strange phenomenon she was. Hugely famous from Big Brother in 2002, massively public life and then death in 2009. A seven year whirlwind of fame. Here and then gone.

Neither of us were big fans of Jade Goody but her death was so tragic. She was so young and it was played out before us in real time. Every time I complain to DH about my age, grey hair, crows feet or middle aged spread he asks whether Jade Goody would choose to have what I have….

George Michael and I will miss his music and showmanship forever.

George for me too. He was such a lovely man, after his death only stories of his kindness came out.

SailingYachty · 13/11/2025 20:55

Heath Ledger was so upsetting, I loved 10 things I hate about you, he was so talented.
Same for Chadwick Boseman, Brittany Murphy and Amy Winehouse, such talented young people makes it really sad.

GoldenNuggets08 · 13/11/2025 20:56

Avicii. So annoyed I never saw him live.

I also get sad whenever I think of Caroline Flack.

Cheggers

Oh bloody hell. I didn’t realise he’d died. Very sad, he seemed like an absolutely lovely bloke.

CalmShaker · 13/11/2025 20:57

Mike the landlord of the Nags Head in Only Fools & Horses. Not a major character I know but an important one and I don't think it was ever the same after that

Tillow4ever · 13/11/2025 20:57

Not any that I haven’t got over, but the one that shook me and really stayed with me for a good couple of months was Adan Canto. I had just discovered “The Cleaning Lady” and was surprised they killed off a prominent character towards the end of the second season. I was googling why they left the show and was shocked to find articles about Adan (the main male lead) dying. He hadn’t even told the rest of the cast and crew about his cancer because it was one that it was something like 1 in a million die from. So the show runners and he obviously thought he just needed a few months off - so they wrote a storyline around that. And then he died! So, so sad as he was so young too.

I was incredibly sad about Matthew Perry, but not shocked.

I wouldn't say I still grieve them but these are the deaths that had an affect on me and made me sad when I heard they had passed.

George Michael 💔(my first love)
Chester Bennington - so tragic and we had only seen Linkin Park live the November before his sudden tragic death.
Sean Lock - what a comedy legend
Jade Goody - so young and such a sad death. I watched her TV show as she fought the cancer and it was very raw and she was so open about her illness and how she felt leaving her boys. It was a hard watch at times.
Caroline Flack - awful tragic loss that really shocked me. So sad for her that she felt this was the only way out.
Dame Deborah James - what a woman and someone who fought so hard to raise awareness of bowel cancer. So sad when she passed away.
Jonnie Irwin - loved him as a presenter and so sad that he died so young leaving his young family behind. Such a nice guy.
Rob Burrow - watching him deteriorate but take his illness and diagnosis with such grace and still loving his life and his family right to the end.

Terry Pratchett

Are you me? Yes, these gentlemen. And I'll throw in Alan Rickman.

XWKD · 13/11/2025 20:59

Janis Joplin's death always made me very sad, although I didn't really know much about her until a few years after. Jimi Hendrix too. Such a waste.

dontletmedownbruce · 13/11/2025 20:59

Emma Chambers (‘Alice Tinker’) and
Dermot Morgan (‘Father Ted’)

both so young. But also

Keith Flint, and I thought Peaches Geldof’s death was terribly sad. Nikki Graham’s also.

nocoolnamesleft · 13/11/2025 21:00

Terry Pratchett. For such a genius to have died from dementia was cruel beyond telling. And the number of books of which we were robbed by cruel fate is depressing.

Lyra87 · 13/11/2025 21:00

Chester Bennington hit me hard, Linkin Park were a massive part of my teen years so I definitely shed a few tears. His voice was like no other.
Robin Williams also made me incredibly sad.

DurhamDurham · 13/11/2025 21:01

@MadisonAvenue I haven’t heard that track, thanks for the heads up, I’ll give it as listen.
sew Green Day at Isle of Wight festival last year and they were absolutely brilliant. Not as brilliant as Bowie but brilliant.

He distanced himself from fame and celebrity but Mark Hollis from Talk Talk. For me he was a great composer and lyricist. I could cry when I listen to some of his songs especially "I don't believe you" from The Colour of Spring" album.
