A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I’m aghast that a 10% hike in the higher rate of tax could ever be considered “fair”. What do others think? Also, what about the implications to the additional rate (would it proportionately rise from 45 to 55%)?? Mind is currently boggling..

Yes that’s nuts.

Upstartled · 05/11/2025 10:10

Thanks for the new thread @TheNuthatch

I think it's absolutely insane, and tips over from taxation to state-sponsered theft.

There are these absolutely mad posts out there, short version is that when someone is on benefits then they contribute more to society and economy than the taxpayers because someone on benefits spends their money more efficiently, and is, in fact doing the taxpayers a favour.

Hold me back, please, because I'll get myself banned.

Ha, I'm avoiding them too. I read one saying that SMEs hadn't really been impacted by the NICs rise 😳. I just cant.

Speaking of ocean going nutters, Lammy is doing PMQs today.
Starmer is abroad again. Haven't seen him for a week now.

Starmer’s trying to see off the Greens, isn’t he? Plonker.

Edited

Yes, he suddenly changed his mind about going to COP when the Greens started catching him in the polls. Also convenient after the chancellor's speech.

Oh is that where. Probably wants an out from the political heat too.

Absolutely. He wants it all pinning on Reeves, as he did at the last budget. Slimy toad.

My partner is a paramedic who is just over by a couple of grand or so (because of unsociable hours payments for nights and weekends)

We have just been discussing this and have agreed he will cut his hours to bring him under the threshold. Working nights and weekend to have so much taken in tax, NI and pensions just isn't worth the impact on his health.

He really is. You just know he’d throw her under the bus for political gain if the markets would let him.

Don’t blame him, whatsoever.

(Separately, if he doesn’t meet Rachel’s definition of a “working person” then I don’t know who does...)

Exactly. There is something very wrong if paramedics are cutting their hours.

Its ludicrous.

Luckily we can absorb the reduction in pay. But id prefer to do that as a result of cutting his hours, rather than being taxed to death while working nights!

100% - he really is a snivelling little shit.

And I like how Reeves tried to play the markets card yesterday - ‘remove me and watch the markets react adversely’

Happy to spin the wheel on that one.

🤣 God. Yes, please take my more of my salary in tax. You'll spend it so much better than I would. I was going to blow it on frivolities like looking after my children.

Tang ping.

If Reeves had a productivity ‘puzzle’ before, she ain’t see nothing.

I’d be happy to spin the wheel so hard she gets bounced into orbit…

More in Common putting Labour in third. Kemi was great the other day. Hope it keeps going up.

Labour have lost 7% vote share since September with More in Common polling. I don't see it improving any time soon.
