Confirmed by police about half an hour ago that the 35 year old arrested has been released without charge.

There are rather a lot of people on here criticising others for jumping to conclusions only to do exactly that themselves. We don’t know for sure that he’s a mentally ill man who has been let down by the system. We don’t know for definite that he isn’t a terrorist. We don’t know that he is. It could be a little of both. He could be mentally ill and still capable of knowing what he was doing. There could be other possible reasons too e.g a brawl that started and spread. Who knows? We’ll just have to wait and see but people are more interested in scolding and feeling superior to each other than the victims. Regardless of the reason they’ve all suffered a truly horrendous ordeal even if they weren’t wounded. The focus should really be on them for now. It’s too early to know much more for definite.

This rather misses the point, which was there was an overwhelming consensus on here that the event must have been terror-related, with extensive rehearsal of the usual semi-coherent 'stop the boats' rhetoric. pages and pages of it.

You're right to say he may still have been a terrorist. It may be mental health, it could be a myriad of other things. the point is, no-one knew. but the conversation was only going one way. that's unfortunately the effect that the reactionary hard right is having in the UK.

It seems more likely that the second guy was swept up in the arrest as the other black man at the scene. This is what we have come to.

Horrendous if the case. All the hateful bile spewed daily in the media is leading to this.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 02/11/2025 18:37

Not true. I feel dreadful for the victims and have nothing but sympathy for them. But do I feel superior to some of the racist poster I've seen spewing hate on here today? Damn right I do.

HRTQueen · 02/11/2025 18:38

LaserPumpkin · 02/11/2025 18:34

Why? They arrested someone that was reported, apparently in good faith, as being involved with the attack. They’ve now discovered he had nothing to do with it and have let him go and publicly cleared him.

I’d argue that’s exactly what the police are supposed to do.

And only he was the other person arrested

you really think that isn’t going to be looked into ?

LakieLady · 02/11/2025 18:38

AStonedRose · 02/11/2025 18:33

Leaving aside the horror of the attack, the reaction on here was so fucking depressing (and indicative of how right wing the place has unfortunately become). 1500+ posts in the blink of an eye, many of them talking about things like using the navy in the channel to send the boats back, Pakistani rape gangs etc

Pages and pages of Reform UK-type arseholery, based on basically nothing, as it increasingly looks like this incident was nothing to do with islam or terror whatsoever

My thoughts exactly.

I bet none of them will admit they were jumping to the wrong conclusion though.

Ponoka7 · 02/11/2025 18:38

I think that this is showing us that we need security guards and metal detectors, in lots of places.
We also need to understand when we need to intervene. If it is mental health issues. Some people only hurt themselves, others seem to want to kill people around them, or target complete strangers, like the poor man in the bank, or others in the park.

Ian Huntley and a host of other mass killers UK born too, whats the point you re trying to make here?

Is it skin colour by any chance?

BAME communities have a much lower take up of MH services, for reasons which seem to be complex - its not just access or internalized racism, for example, but there are cultural considerations in addition and yes, help seeking behaviour is significantly different in BAME communities. As for MH services being shit, they are on their knees - there are not enough staff, they have been starved of funds and staff are overworked to the point of burn out. As funding has been cut, the 'recovery model' has been pushed, which means more people being refused services who in the past would have had lifelong support.

However, it also irks me somewhat that people immediately jump to it being MH issues that cause this. People with MH issues are much more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators. Sometimes people are just bad.

Insightful post 👍

The press conference this morning stated that 2 people were arrested with no mention of one of them being released.

That’s interesting. I felt they were putting lots of features on one of these men and not the other, it felt so off! It wasn’t adding up this morning and I said it then. Watch this space…

Why would it be “looked into”? There’s nothing to investigate.

Very well said. 👏🏻

Some people simply can’t see it.

Are you as critical of the posters who filled up at least two threads with vile speculation?

Eta: and are now doing it on this very thread.

HPFA · 02/11/2025 18:40

The racists on X were demanding the names be released earlier.

So an innocent man would have been exposed to the mob.

That's why the law and due process matter.

Passthebiscuit12 · 02/11/2025 18:40

WeCouldBeNiceToEachOther · 02/11/2025 18:09

They did. They’ve now confirmed one man wasn’t involved, despite it being “reliably” reported to them at the scene that he was.

I said this hours ago to my sister though - in all the eye witnesses on the news they all said similar things they were shouting “ he has a knife “ “ we saw the knife man “ I told her it was strange that everyone is referring to one person.

Seriously? I would’ve thought it was obviously terrorist attackers.

Welikebeingcosy · 02/11/2025 18:41

I did think that the number of injuries seemed low for a two man attack that would be harder for people to fight off. Not that more would have been a welcoming sight.

DuesToTheDirt · 02/11/2025 18:42

Insanityisnotastrategy · 02/11/2025 18:11

That makes more 'sense' in a way than two men - in their thirties no less - seemingly doing this together without any ideological/terrorism motivation. No less appalling though.

Yes, I was thinking the same, while it was still the "2 men" scenario - it didn't make sense for 2 men to carry out such an attack together without it being terrorism.

I'd rather stay away from conspiracy theories

I'm not sure about this. I hate the fact that our police are basically corrupt and institutionally racist (and having seen them in action personally and professionally, I've no doubt this is the case). But if there was even a 0.5% chance that they thought that the other guy was involved, it would have been irresponsible beyond belief not to detain him. And in fairness they released him within 24 hours.

I hope they treating him with respect while he was in custody. I wonder if he will come forward.

No chance. We'll all be told to "wait and see" or #BeKind. Neither of which they were prepared to do this morning when they couldn't wait to spread their own brand of Farage-ness.

Assuming this was because of his skin colour... saying 2 British suspects would have been fine but no, being divisive and saying caribbean, and hes actually a victim. Smh

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 02/11/2025 18:44

Oh shut up. There have been plenty of territorist incidents and culture incidents such as sexual abuse too. But let's just forget about those shall we.
