The racism comes in assuming that just because it’s a terror attack, it must be a Muslim that’s done it - especially when most Muslims denounce the ideologies of those carrying out the attacks.

I haven’t read much about the incident yet and am not agreeing with reckless assumptions motivated by blatant racism - but objectively, in high stakes situations where there are multiple victims, and potentially more while it is a ‘live’ incident, police have to make split-second assessments based on what’s in front of them. If the 35 year old was indeed the only other POC besides the attacker in the vicinity(?) they are going to be looking at worse case scenarios based off possible likelihoods.

A likely and serious scenario for an indiscriminate knife attack in a public setting is terrorism. Most widely-publicised terror attacks (there are increasing right-wing attacks now, I know, but do not necessarily take up as much headline space) are committed by self-identifying muslims. Most muslims are non-white. Most of the widely-publicised terror attacks are committed by more than one assailant. I have no idea how the 35 year old was behaving which led to his arrest (likely terrified or stunned would be my guess) or how close he was to the attacker.

It clearly isn’t ideal or acceptable that an innocent man was grabbed based purely on several assumptions, the chief one presumably being his race, but I can see how it happened in a high-pressure situation where the main objective was to target any possible would-be assailant based off a specific checklist, and prevent any more potential blood shed to members of the public. To clarify, saying I can see how it happened isn't me saying I readily agree that it should have happened.

I’m sick of ‘mental health’ being the catch-all when it’s been determined it isn’t a terrorist attack. Weird that women don’t go on a murdering spree when they are mentally unwell? I see it as another disgusting, violent man who will no doubt get a weak sentence or no sentence.
