@bombastix that must have been terrifying.

Evenstar · 02/11/2025 11:25

How awful @bombastix events like last night must bring it all back.

bombastix · 02/11/2025 11:34

It is extremely frightening. I hope the police work very fast to clear this up and the court case is done swiftly. People need to be reassured.

You could change knife carry laws which are pretty anaemic. We have similar laws for guns, which have been effective. Somebody who is carrying a knife beyond 2.5 inches in public short of a reasonable excuse can be given prison. It is the use of reasonable excuse which needs examination. Unless you are a chef or gardener, the chances are your large knife is being carried for offensive purposes

countrygirl99 · 02/11/2025 11:37

I've never witnessed an actual stabbing but thought I was going to in April 1986, Elephant and Castle tube station. Got into the up lift with 2 other people, a black guy and a skinhead. As the door closed the skinhead got out a flick knife and pointed it at the black guys stomach and held it there until the doors opened at the top. It must have been less than a minute but it felt like ages and I'm not sure the black guy or I breathed the whole way. Trouble was I couldn't give a description of the skinhead, all I could look at was his knife. I can still picture that knife nearly 40 years later and it still makes my blood run cold so god knows what it will do mentally to those poor people on the train. I hope they get the appropriate support.

We need more prison places.
I know three more prisons are planned to be opened in the next 5 years.
But really these were needed a decade ago.

placemats · 02/11/2025 11:45

We need better mental health services. For too long this vital area of health care has been (in my view deliberately) neglected.

placemats · 02/11/2025 11:47

I can't begin to understand the horror of those who suffered and witnessed the attacks. Much love and support.

We also need more investment in the prison service and probation. The state of prisons is appalling. And investment in mental health.

Elected Reform Durham county councillor Darren Grimes posted this political attack on the assumption it was an Islamist attack

Ugh, that awful image sticks in my craw and tells us all we need to know about Grimes.

Notonthestairs · 02/11/2025 12:20

I think we knew that about Grimes already.
Desperate to make political capital.
Vibes not facts.

It’s quiet, you could say subdued, here this morning. Two Sky News helicopters are still circling overhead and you can hear them very clearly because there’s virtually no traffic. Our (Tory) MP has acquitted himself exceptionally well, he’s behaved exactly as you’d hope a community leader would.

Matt Goodwin, guest on BBC QT last Thursday, tweeted similar, blaming 'mass uncontrolled immigration'

QT called him an academic

(edited as I got his quote slightly wrong)

Yes it's evil. Same happened in Denmark Place, SOHO London in 1980.

And to review sentencing. Too many in prison would do better with some other sort of sentence (where ‘better’ means chances of recidivism and life chances afterwards). My dad used to teach maths in a Borstal in the 60s and 70s. At an event with the governor of Stafford prison the question came up about what he’d do if he heard 75% of the prisoners had escaped. His answer? Ask which 75%, because 75% of the prison population wouldn’t cause much of a problem if they did get out. I don’t believe that situation has changed. We need to reorganise criminal justice from the ground up.

Agree about your MP. He seems a decent chap who knows exactly how to behave in a crisis.

PandoraSocks · 02/11/2025 12:47

The racism is off the scale on MN. Plenty of shit stirring going on.

There are horrible tweets on X from the likes of Braverman's husband and Ben Habib.

If you click on the now updated Sunder Katwala (sundersays) link I posted earlier you can see the posts.
