Things I don’t do…that apparently everyone else DOES do…

Tonight I put some Nivea on my face but apart from taking my makeup off each day, I don’t have a skin care routine and I don’t use moisturiser that often.

Other things I don’t do…I don’t make the bed every day (might straighten it, but that’s it), I don’t keep takeaway boxes (does anyone?) and I don’t send Christmas cards (never miss a birthday though).

What things do you not do…that most other people seem to do? This is a ‘no judgement’ thread. 😆

Shardlake63 · 23/10/2025 06:53

I don't use TikTok or Instagram or Facebook.
I've never listened to a podcast.
I watch very little TV, in fact I wouldn't miss it if we didn't have one. I'd rather read instead.
I don't keep up with celebrity gossip and have absolutely zero interest in "influencers".
I rarely wear make-up - maybe once a month or so on special nights out.
I do my own manicures (don't wear nail polish) and eyebrow tidying as required. I've never had it done in a salon.
I only send Christmas cards to older relatives, as they still expect and appreciate them. We're down to less than half a dozen now. 😥

I do have a skincare routine of sorts - cleanser and moisturiser only though, as I have dry skin and my face would fall off if I didn't do it.
I do make the bed, but only after I've aired it in the morning after I get up.
I also wash and change the bedding every week, I would feel minging if I didn't.
I do iron, but only necessary items like cotton shirts, blouses etc.
I do keep takeaway containers as they're useful for husband's lunches at work and for the dog's lunches at doggy daycare.

Mumsnet is Social Media.

It's not actual SM though like Facebook and instagram, it's an anonymous forum like Reddit, DS, Pistonheads, etc

The people who don’t wear makeup - do you have a sex life with another person who is in the same room as you?

Do you actually keep it on during sex, doesn't it sort of get sweaty and smudge everywhere including onto the sheets and onto the man?

I don't wear make up either but I assumed one would take it off before going to bed. Never had a problem finding sexual partners, always had one since late teens.

If I ever met a man who expected me to wear make up, I'd ask him why he didn't wear any. But I never have met one who expected it.

Wouldn't it feel a bit slimy and/or chalky if you're kissing someone's face with it on.

Gremlins101 · 23/10/2025 07:06

shellyleppard · 22/10/2025 23:22

I don't wear make up or iron clothes.
Don't use Instagram, Snapchat or tik tok.
Don't worry about the above 😁
I do read a lot of books. Eat too many biscuits lol

Same to all the above. I eat my way through books. I spend my life telling my husband how much better he'd sleep if he was lost in a book instead of playing rocket league every evening. But to each their own.

Pricelessadvice · 23/10/2025 07:10

I don’t have a skincare routine, just use a bit of moisturiser. I look young for my age and my skin is good so can’t be doing too much wrong.

I only wear a bit of eye make up, never foundation or anything on my face.

I believe that TV’s should only be turned on after 7pm. I refuse to watch anything in the day.

CoffeePlse · 23/10/2025 07:11

Don't wear make up (seems common on this thread!)
Don't have a television
Don't go on holiday abroad
Don't buy things on HP
Don't have flushing toilets (compost)
Don't buy dishwasher tablets
Don't iron
Don't eat animal products
Never buy fast food.

This might make me sound like a massive hippy. I'm not, I live in a normal house and have a senior management job. I have my vices 😊

PersephoneParlormaid · 23/10/2025 07:16

I don’t iron.
I don’t make my bed, just pull back the duvet as that’s healthier.
Never listened to a podcast.
Wont pay for music or TV streaming services.
No longer drink alcohol.
Don’t have take aways.
Don't go to the pictures any more. Too expensive and people are annoying with their phones and talking.
No tattoos.
Never had a one night stand, or would want one.
Never had the desire to try drugs, being a nurse I’ve seen the consequences.
No desire to do a long haul flight.
I’d never get married again. I’m dreading having to fake my excitement when my kids announce it to me.
Never been on Instagram or Snap Chat, no desire to.
Never had a credit card. Won’t buy something if I can’t afford it.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 23/10/2025 07:22

I don't like anything perfumed
I don't go on holiday and have never flown
I don't go to coffee shops (with or without my dog 😉)
I don't eat takeaways (and I've never eaten anything from McDonalds in my life)
I don't drink alcohol and never have
I don't have any interest in celebrities
I don't have any tattoos or piercings

I could probably carry on with the I don't theme ad nauseam; no make-up, no cosmetic procedures, no ironing, no tv, no facebook/tiktok, ring doorbell, alexa, etc.

LillyPJ · 23/10/2025 07:22

I don't have takeaways. I don't buy pizza. I don't wear heels. I don't watch morning TV. I don't have my nails done.

Sandyshandy · 23/10/2025 07:30

Don’t do tik tok or insta
Just soap on my face in the bath and plain water and spf in the mornIng
no television in the day (apart from eg Queen funeral)
no tv soaps
do not think about Christmas or eat or do anything Christmasy till december
don’t care about fashion (but do like to look smart / appropriately dressed

I also often do what I call ‘observing’ when out and about and one of the things I observe is how many women wear make up. If you actually look most women don’t wear any or very little. Under 25s are much more likely to have it plastered on, the ‘full face’ look is really quite unusual over 30. This has been consistent in most places I’ve been too, with the exception of Liverpool, where I felt like a hobo.

Cleansing and moisturising is a routine to me. What do you do now?

I’m not convinced I was cleansing particularly effectively before - generally just washing my face with whatever facewash I’d picked up.

I use a hyaluronic acid serum and then a vitamin c one, dab on a bit of eye cream then use a moisturiser and spf in the mornings.

Evenings I use a cleansing balm, wash off with a flannel. I spray with a supposed ‘calming’ spray - not sure it does anything but enjoy the feel of it. Use a prescription retinoid, let it sink in for about 10-15 minutes then a moisturiser/ night cream.

Sometimes use those under eye patches in the morning if I can be bothered and remember.

Birdsongsingingagainandagain · 23/10/2025 07:33

This is a great thread and is encouraging me to do less of some things.

Some people’s don’ts seem quite extreme to me like I don’t really iron but I would if an item needed it. I might not wear it that often though!

I prefer online food shopping but I don’t never go in a shop or have not seen a self-service till.

Wow you’ve gone from near zero to hero! Which things do you use? I am 60 and need to up my game. I use cleanser , a cloth, spf moisturiser and I e recently bought a fancy serum! But it’s a bit spenny!

squashyhat · 23/10/2025 07:36

largepinkcontainer · 22/10/2025 23:30

Yes…I meant the plastic takeaway boxes. As far as I know you can’t freeze stuff in them or put them in the microwave so I don’t see much use in keeping them.

And yes, I really should make the bed properly. I used to do it but then fell out of the habit.

You can do both. I have a good collection of boxes I use for storing and freezing food.

CeeJay81 · 23/10/2025 07:38

No make up or Skincare routine.
No Ironing
No Instagram, Tiktok or Snapchat
No Tattoos
Don't own a Dishwasher
No interest in reality TV(except Traters).

muddyford · 23/10/2025 07:38

I don't wear make-up.
Knickers are practical, white cotton, though bras are sporty and colourful!
Never had nails nor brows done.
Never had a facial nor been to a spa.
I have never worn high heels.
No streaming subscription.
MN is my only social medium.
I don't do foreign holidays.

Waitingfordoggo · 23/10/2025 07:43

I’m so confused about the make-up/sex/same room post. The ‘same room’ is perhaps the most confusing part of it.

I don’t think ironing can be included in this thread- I think probably a majority of people don’t iron these days- I don’t and never have and most people I know don’t iron. That is to say I don’t iron regularly or as at a matter of course. If I need something smart ironed for an event, DH will iron it for me.

BluntAzureDreamer · 23/10/2025 07:46

I don't drink alcohol (quit 3 years ago)
I dont watch any TV
I don't walk past a bookshop without going in and buying at least two books
I don't read or follow the news
I don't have Facebook (quit 6 months ago)
I don't wear any make up (occasionally a bit of mascara at a push)
I don't DO Christmas, I wouldn't have a tree if the kids didn't make me 🤣
I don't like adverts. Like REALLY REALLY hate them. I HATE having 'buy this!!/do that!' shoved down my throat to the point I'll always leave the room or turn the radio off

I now have a mental image of this person and she is nothing like how I am in real life 🤣

CRCGran · 23/10/2025 07:49

I'm actually astounded at the number of people who say they don't make their bed, clean their skirting boards or iron !!! I'm OCD about all of those. Gives me the heeby jeebies just thinking about NOT doing them. But..... I've never ever watched an episode of Big Brother, Love Island, or ANY of those reality shows. And other than mascara I've never worn makeup.

LillyPJ · 23/10/2025 07:51

I use a flannel and warm water. Very occasionally apply a day cream or sun cream. Your routine sounds very good to me!

Skintone · 23/10/2025 07:52

So basically all of you who think that the things you don’t do make you incredibly unusual, are discovering on this thread that not drinking tea or coffee, not wearing make up, not ironing etc is incredibly common?

thisishowloween · 23/10/2025 07:52

I don’t go to the hairdressers
I’ve never in my life been to a salon and had my nails done
I barely ever wear make-up and if I do it’s just a bit of foundation and mascara - never owned or worn lipstick
I’ve never watched Love Island or Traitors
I’ve never “hosted” anyone
I don’t send Christmas cards and don’t really bother with presents either
I don’t iron and never have - wouldn’t even know where to start

Fizbosshoes · 23/10/2025 07:53

I dont drink coffee
I dont have my hair cut or styled regularly
I only wear make up for going out to dinner/parties
I dont watch traitors
Never saw game of thrones

I do however have loads of take away boxes despite only having takeaways about twice a year. We always store leftovers in them. There's usually at least 4 in our fridge at any one time
