A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I can't answer than without getting banned from MN.
I know which side I'm on.

Ditto. I've been sitting here with itchy fingers. I think I need to bugger off for a while and go do something else.

Reeves is catching a break this morning, alas.

There is a flight into havens including sov debt, given the regional US banks credit fears.

A short reprieve for her. Not that she deserves one.

The ban is currently being discussed on the news channel. People are quite rightly outraged. I confess to also being frightened; are we revisiting 1939?

For all the outrage and noise over Trump the US is doing what he wanted, getting various companies to shift there instead.

Scarily deluded. Or just a liar. Or both. Not sure.

Rivalled · 17/10/2025 09:47

I must’ve missed all the gushing foreign press about our economy - has she descended into fantasy as a strategy to cope with her bad and worsening choices?

Surely no-one is buying this??? Outside of Labour that is? I can't believe that anyone is looking at UK and envying us at this moment?

Daily Mail headlines this morning. Apologies if someone already posted.

I think it’s best to ignore all Reeves nonsense words.

Look at the tax and spend policies. The first lie was the manifesto one as @Nolletimiereput

“Our manifesto is fully costed and fully funded and requires no further tax increases.”

The second major lie is that the last budget was a one off tax hike.

Yes it's just word salad. She just spouts shit every time she opens her mouth. Best to ignore, you're right

Envy the high high scandi/french taxes on those broadest shoulders since 2010, whilst you also enjoy paying privately for health and education due to the low low level of public services…

Yes, exactly. We have the worst of both worlds in the UK. High taxes and shit public services.

Some 56pc of employers said they would cut jobs or freeze hiring if the Chancellor raised taxes on businesses again, according to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). The trade body warned that corporate tax rises would put Britain’s “growth mission” in jeopardy.

Alan Vallance, the ICAEW chief executive, will say in a speech on Friday: “The reality is that Britain faces a damaging cliff edge if the Chancellor decides to raid businesses again at next month’s Budget.”

Mr Vallance sounded the warning as the Chancellor scrambles to find ways to raise money without breaching her manifesto pledges to leave income tax rates, employee National Insurance and VAT untouched. Economists estimate Ms Reeves must find around £30bn in tax rises and spending cuts to repair her fiscal plans.

The UK’s unemployment rate has already risen to a four-year high of 4.8pc in the wake of the Chancellor’s increase in employers’ National Insurance contributions, which came in to effect in April.

Nearly half of businesses surveyed said they had already cut jobs or frozen hiring to cope. Vacancies have fallen almost uninterruptedly for three years.

China has warned that Britain will face “consequences” after Sir Keir Starmer delayed a planning decision on its new super-embassy in London.

In comments suggesting Beijing believed the Government had promised the embassy would go ahead, China accused the UK of showing “disregard for contractual spirit”.

The Government has put off a decision on whether to approve the super-embassy until December 10, three months after the original target date of September 9.

Lin Jian, a foreign ministry spokesman, said China had “grave concern and strong dissatisfaction”.

He called on the Government to “immediately fulfil its obligations and honour its commitments, otherwise the British side shall bear all consequences”.

He said the UK had shown “disregard for contractual spirit, acting in bad faith and without integrity”.

Starmer under pressure, again - watch him fold.

A VERY interesting development in my facebook page.

I have two friends on facebook (married to each other) who are hard left Labour supporters. Hard hard left. Post things all the time in support of Labour. Kill the rich etc. Anti private school. Labour, Labour Labour.

They have both just posted an anti-Kier Starmer meme. I can't cut and paste as my computer is being difficult but it's the one where Kier Starmer says 'Hands up who likes me?' and then a picture from the Young Ones of them holding their hands to the floor.

I think that means something significant tbh.

Now China is openly threatening us secure in the knowledge our weak and hopeless so-called government will acquiesce without protest. I'd like to say it's unbelievable, but sadly it's no more than I expect from KS & Co.

Perhaps it's dawned on them this is a Labour government in name only.

I think in the 14 year wilderness people assumed that the Labour government they were getting was just picking up the baton from the Blair years.

marshmallowmix · 17/10/2025 11:39

Somebody needs to stop the madness!

Glad to see the Head of MI5 spoke yesterday and said that China is a threat...KS is a liar and I truly hope he is finished. That was good timing for once.

As for Rachel Reeves words fail me, she is chilling and she is destroying the economy and so many people's lives....am scared stiff at what she will introduce we are battling as it is...hit form all sides and some.

Surely they can't remove CGT exemption for your own home, blood sweat and tears went into that for most and it could be destroyed...we went without for years to buy a home that should be untouchable it is your home that you live in ffs!

She shows no remorse so cold and unfeeling delivers destruction...she said she will tax the rich those with broad shoulders....there definition of rich is anyone who works in the private sector has worked and saved and aspired to get their own home. She takes aim and will destroy same with pensions/ISA's .

She is not for the working person anything but...I utterly despise them all. It is the politics of envy.

Tories need to go for them now big time...before more devastation is dropped on us.

I guess there have been some generous backhanders from the CCP and they will want what has been promised in exchange. Interesting times ahead here.

I would hope so, but I think many in government and other Labour supporters feel some sort of tribal bond with left wing regimes,no matter how authoritarian. It was the same when the Soviet Union existed - “Stalin’s regime ay not have been perfect but on balance the good outweighed the bad” and so on.

Lutonsgirl · 17/10/2025 11:47

@marshmallowmix how would cgt on homes even work? Is the maintenance, any extension or home improvement taken into account? Apologies i dont understand how it would work?

marshmallowmix · 17/10/2025 11:48

Yep and before she was sacked Angela Rayner who would have made the decision if still in post was all for giving it the go ahead....hmmm is that how she has accumulated so much wealth...back handers.

Anyone with any common sense would refuse it is mad but it has not been shut down just delayed again...
