Surely you don't carry your phone everywhere?

Every time there's a discussion about civil liberties, for instance at the moment with ID cards, people always say, why are you worried they can track you by your phone anyway. But that implies that people are always carrying their phones.

I have a phone, I have to for work, and it's very useful outside work as well. I sometimes use it for navigation, and on certain instances I might take it with me if there's a chance I'll need to liaise with someone while out. Super helpful technology.

But surely people aren't taking it to the shops, or on the school run, or out for a walk in the countryside?

Yeah I go no where without my phone…

DarlingHoldMyHand · 04/10/2025 17:07

Umm yes? I do have mine with me pretty much 24/7.

Skybluepinky · 04/10/2025 17:07

Of course, they are exactly the times you need a phone.

Sirzy · 04/10/2025 17:08

In work and at home it’s not always on my person but when out and about it is, for a start it’s my bank card most of the time!

itsgettingweird · 04/10/2025 17:08

Errrmmm yes. My “mobile” phone does come everywhere.

onlyoneoftheregimentinstep · 04/10/2025 17:08

I’m in my 70s - never go
anywhere without my phone.

PixieandMe · 04/10/2025 17:09

Of course they are!

SparklyCardigan · 04/10/2025 17:09

Surely no-one is that faux naive. It's 2025. Of course you need your phone at the shops.

DarlingHoldMyHand · 04/10/2025 17:09

I wouldn't go to the shops without my phone because amongst other things I use it to pay now. I don't take a wallet and use my phone to pay.

And I wouldn't go for a walk in the countryside without it - it's got maps on it and it would be much harder without it.

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:09

That sounds really weird, I hate carrying stuff. Don't usually lock the door so I don't have to take keys

EmpressaurusKitty · 04/10/2025 17:10

Why wouldn’t you?

If I’m out for a walk my phone might well be on airplane mode most of the time, but it’s a clock, a map & a camera.

Edited to add that what’s unimaginable to me is going out without locking your door. You must live somewhere incredibly crime-free.

CantSleepEver · 04/10/2025 17:10

I take my phone everywhere, as does everyone I know.

You leave the house and leave the door open? Why?

Branster · 04/10/2025 17:10

Absolutely everywhere with me when I leave the house. I don't know anyone not taking their phone with them.

KnickerlessParsons · 04/10/2025 17:11

My shopping list is on my phone.

If I don’t want to carry stuff in my hands, I use a cross body bag, a flip belt etc but always have my phone on me.

Mokeytree · 04/10/2025 17:12

I think you are the odd one out here

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:12

Tbf my phone is really chunky due to having to have a rugged one for work, but I'd hate to feel tied to it anyway

I hate carrying stuff too. I leave my clothes at home because I don't want to be carrying them.

My shopping list is on my phone.

That too, & also my store card apps for getting points.

I think leaving your house unlocked is the weird bit!

Slcalohaj · 04/10/2025 17:12

My phone is always with me 24/7 it’s my bank card, I use it as my car key as well as the obvious stuff like telephone.

Sarah2891 · 04/10/2025 17:12

I'd think most people with a phone don't go anywhere without it.

nannyl · 04/10/2025 17:13

Yes I do.

I use it to pay for anything / everything with google pay, and my AA app is on there so if I break down I need my phone.

I don't always take it into the garden, but always take it if I drive anywhere (and living in the middle of nowhere I drive everywhere)

I think you’re unusual. Most people lock their doors, and most people take their phones everywhere. They’re ‘mobile’ phones.

It might be generational, though. The only people I know who don’t have their phone on them all the time are over 60 (although, I couldn’t say this was usual even for that demographic). Can I ask how old you are OP?
