Surely you don't carry your phone everywhere?

Every time there's a discussion about civil liberties, for instance at the moment with ID cards, people always say, why are you worried they can track you by your phone anyway. But that implies that people are always carrying their phones.

I have a phone, I have to for work, and it's very useful outside work as well. I sometimes use it for navigation, and on certain instances I might take it with me if there's a chance I'll need to liaise with someone while out. Super helpful technology.

But surely people aren't taking it to the shops, or on the school run, or out for a walk in the countryside?

Only the back

I assume you don’t bother with insurance then?

Well clearly I'm the weirdo here. When the heck did everything change? I don't think people were doing this 10 years ago?

We were doing this 10 years ago. I know because that’s when I started university and we all took our phones everywhere already. And had done for the 5 or so years before that even as teens.

Er, no. Not so much. But that was 10 years ago. You didn't need an app for almost everything then!

A lot changes in 10 years. Especially when it comes to modern technology!

Yes we did.

I have a first aid kit in my car, and also in my bag so yes, I always have access to one of those too......

I was going to say this too…first aid kit in the car always!!

Silverstar2 · 04/10/2025 17:19

Well I'm diabetic so my blood sugar is on the Libre app on my phone so yes, it's with me all day - and night.

I totally get why people like yourself would want to utilise such fantastic tech. I just don't understand how come most people seem to need it a lot, and I don't.

Obviously if you've got travel passes etc, you'll need it a lot, but not everywhere??

I've always taken my phone everywhere with me ever since I got my first mobile in 1999. I mean that is kind of the point of a mobile phone no?

Batshit right?! I never get people who don't lock their doors.

Insurance will NOT pay out if you're robbed!

Sheknowsaboutme · 04/10/2025 17:22

I always take it. I live rurally. If i hurt myself or trip whatever my other half knows where i am. Im out 2-3 times a day checking livestock so need my phone. And i walk a lot of mountains and any one who goes up a mountain without one is plain stupid.

I’m in my 70s - never go
anywhere without my phone.

Same here. I use it to pay for everything.

I pretty much take my phone everywhere on walks, to the shops etc but that is because I use it to listen to books and podcasts on walks and have some of my payments cards on Google wallet in the phone. I have a phone cover which also holds a bit of cash and cards, so it acts as a replacement for my wallet

I don't always have it in the same room as me at home but 99% of thr time if I am out of the house I have my phone.

I am in my 60s and didn't used to be like this but in my 50s I started using it to read books on my kindle app and listen on audible so instead of a book and wallet, I bring my phone in a wallet type cover and I always have something to read or a way to pay for things

My son (21). is almost surgically attached attached to his and is never more than 1 metre away from it at all times. I think he sees it as another limb and would be as upset to be without it

I think anyone under 30 would never go anywhere ever without their phone

That sounds really weird, I hate carrying stuff. Don't usually lock the door so I don't have to take keys

I mean I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing this for safety, and equally would not go out without my phone so that I have it for an emergency if needed but also to pay for things, take pictures, use maps, listen to podcast/music etc. But each to their own I guess 🤷‍♀️ However, if you injured yourself whilst out on a walk in the countryside (or indeed came across someone else) or a relative/friend needed to contact you in a genuine emergency what would you do?

Ginmonkeyagain · 04/10/2025 17:23

LOL at not locking your door when you go out. I live in London, I lock my door when I go out to the bins.

Lanva · 04/10/2025 17:24

I take my phone with me when I'm travelling outside of where I live, on the train etc.

I don't have it on me all the time. I don't use it in the house unless Im made to by 2FA. I don't take it out for walks. I don't want to be contactable all the time. I like a bit of time off the leash.

The point is that you CAN take it anywhere. Super useful for certain situations, but just can't imagine needing it in most situations

My phone is my point of contact/ camera/video/radio/stereo/tv/debit card/points card/ mine of information/ book/ children’s homework/ email/ calendar/ organiser/ appointment booker/ social media / map/ gym membership/ games/ alarm/ reminders
and probably loads more! It goes every where!!

SupremeArbiter · 04/10/2025 17:24

I take my phone for emergency calls if I need to make one.

Also so if I’m on my own walking the dog someone (usually DP or the sprogs) knows where I am if im
not back when they’d expect me to be.

I also always carry deep heat spray. In case my back gets sore.

I am a rape survivor. I didn’t used to but now I’m too scared not to. And I hate that.

I didn’t have my phone on me and I couldn’t call 999 until after. It was too late then. Not that I’d perhaps be able to call it at all but I like the reassurance. It’s always in my hand or right by me. And it’s always charged.

Troublein · 04/10/2025 17:25

My phone lives in an RFID box in the hall and hardly ever comes out.

If I'm going out somewhere I might bring it with me, but 90% of the time I don't.

Anyone who actually knows me can contact me without a phone.
Anyone who doesn't know how to get in touch with me any other way, is someone I don't need to hear from.

🙄 Do what you like but you do have to accept that you’re wrong and most people do take their phone everywhere.

Phone comes everywhere with me……including to the bathroom.
