Surely you don't carry your phone everywhere?

Every time there's a discussion about civil liberties, for instance at the moment with ID cards, people always say, why are you worried they can track you by your phone anyway. But that implies that people are always carrying their phones.

I have a phone, I have to for work, and it's very useful outside work as well. I sometimes use it for navigation, and on certain instances I might take it with me if there's a chance I'll need to liaise with someone while out. Super helpful technology.

But surely people aren't taking it to the shops, or on the school run, or out for a walk in the countryside?

Not locking your door when you leave the house is risky and very silly.

Of course I take my phone everywhere with me. It's a "mobile" phone so that's the purpose of it. It isn't just for phone calls either. It's for maps, GPS, emails, train tickets, aeroplane boarding passes, banking, news and more. What use is it if left behind? It is also often useful to pay for stuff in shops, even though I do have bank cards too (I use both methods).

You're the outlier here, and possibly need to become a little less naïve (not locking the house).

Are you typing your answers to comments on here on a laptop / tablet or on your phone?

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:27

Computer on desk

I don’t have a landline and haven’t used a credit card since Apple Pay was invented. My phone is very much like an extra limb.
I do have the smallest iPhone available and it fits in the back pocket of my jeans. I won’t replace it till they do another small one.

The point is that you CAN take it anywhere. Super useful for certain situations, but just can't imagine needing it in most situations

The point isn’t needing it… it’s wanting it. I want to respond to my family, friends or partner if they need something or want to chat. I want to read Mumsnet or listen to a podcast or check my emails when waiting for or on public transport. I want to check that my payment has gone through when paying for things or that it’s the correct amount.

It’s entertainment, wallet, tracker, contact with others etc all at once.

No I don't

Well I hope that level of stupidity doesn’t come back to bite you on the arse one day.

user1476613140 · 04/10/2025 17:28

I don't feel happy about it, but yes, I take it everywhere with me especially if out and about and schools need to contact me.

LoveMySushi · 04/10/2025 17:28

I use my phone to open my front door/garage door, to drive, to pay, literally everything. I go nowhere without my phone 😃 but i never carry a purse or keys.

SpackelFrog · 04/10/2025 17:28

I always take mine, school run is a 20 mile round trip and if I have my phone, I have up to date navigation, ability to pay in shops, can phone school if I’m stuck in traffic and most importantly I can listen to a podcast before I pick up kids!

I also take it for walking the dog.

I also lock my front door, even though I live in a remote area, why wouldn’t you?

Computer on desk

See I haven’t owned a desktop computer since 2012.

SupremeArbiter · 04/10/2025 17:28

I lock all my doors all the time.

I would leave the house without anything BUT my phone! It's my keys, wallet, watch, camera, calendar, maps, shopping list, plus all kinds of other apps... To be honest why are we still calling them 'phones' as tho that's their main purpose 😂

Ringing people is one of the least likely ways I use my phone 😂

gracewitt · 04/10/2025 17:29

I'm with you OP. Take my phone when I'm in the car (in case of needing to call breakdown services) but otherwise don't carry it routinely. I don't have any close family and am retired so there is less need to be contactable.

DramaLlamacchiato · 04/10/2025 17:29

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:09

That sounds really weird, I hate carrying stuff. Don't usually lock the door so I don't have to take keys

That sounds weirder unless someone is always in. Maybe you’re the weird one in fact?

JustMyView13 · 04/10/2025 17:29

Yes. Everywhere.
But the fact you go out and leave your door unlocked is as wild to me, as people taking their phones everywhere is to you. 🙂

So you don’t carry your phone or lock your door? Both things highly unusual. One is dangerous.

gamerchick · 04/10/2025 17:29

Knock it off with the wide eyed thing OP. Don't lock your door indeed. So edgy

mydogisthebest · 04/10/2025 17:30

I don't take my phone when I walk my dog and often go to the shops or out for the day with DH and leave my phone at home.

I don't use it to pay (and never would as I have a bank card). I don't see the need to always have my phone with me. Don't take it upstairs when I go to bed either

Digdongdoo · 04/10/2025 17:30

Mine is not glued to me at all times, I do sometimes pop out without it. But yeah, it's usually with me.
I can't believe you don't lock your doors!

Pikachu678 · 04/10/2025 17:30

LittleGreenDuck · 04/10/2025 17:16

Let's hope no one breaks in and steals the phone you left behind!

They don't need to break in, she leaves the door unlocked

TheGreatWesternShrew · 04/10/2025 17:30

Troublein · 04/10/2025 17:25

My phone lives in an RFID box in the hall and hardly ever comes out.

If I'm going out somewhere I might bring it with me, but 90% of the time I don't.

Anyone who actually knows me can contact me without a phone.
Anyone who doesn't know how to get in touch with me any other way, is someone I don't need to hear from.

Why even have one then

TheOnlyWayisGerard · 04/10/2025 17:30

Apple Pay is now 10 years old, so yes, people carried their phones with them 10 years ago. Even my mother (early 60s) who is a self confessed Luddite when it comes to any tech carries hers most places with her. Lots of towns/cities have got rid of phone boxes, so if you were to come across an accident alone, you couldn’t contact emergency services quickly.

Ginmonkeyagain · 04/10/2025 17:23

LOL at not locking your door when you go out. I live in London, I lock my door when I go out to the bins.

When in Birmingham, my NDN puts on her burglar alarm to go to the post box. It's over the road and about 15m along the pavement!

NautilusLionfish · 04/10/2025 17:31

I take it to the toilet. And sometimes in the shower. It's by me when I cook. And by me when I poop. I am a phone addict. And Nautilus is my name

mummydoris2006 · 04/10/2025 17:31

Mine is literally with me 24 hours a day 365 days a year as it's connected to my continued blood glucose monitor. An alarm sounds if I go out of range of it.
It would be nice sometimes not to always have to have it, on holiday etc!
