Surely you don't carry your phone everywhere?

Every time there's a discussion about civil liberties, for instance at the moment with ID cards, people always say, why are you worried they can track you by your phone anyway. But that implies that people are always carrying their phones.

I have a phone, I have to for work, and it's very useful outside work as well. I sometimes use it for navigation, and on certain instances I might take it with me if there's a chance I'll need to liaise with someone while out. Super helpful technology.

But surely people aren't taking it to the shops, or on the school run, or out for a walk in the countryside?

I don't use my phone anywhere near as much as some of my friends who seem to be welded to theirs but I do have it on me pretty much all the time. I check road information if I'm going anywhere but rarely use it for calls or texts. I do that mainly when I get home.

I would never go out without locking my door.

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:22

No I don't

So, you don’t lock your doors, don’t take your phone with you and don’t have insurance. Those are obviously all choices to which you’re entitled, but you can’t genuinely have thought those were things most people did? Are your friends and family similarly averse to keys and phones?

Negroany · 04/10/2025 17:32

Yep, take it everywhere, even to the loo.

shuggles · 04/10/2025 17:32

I'm someone who looks down on smartphones as I really just see them as shit "poor man" versions of a standard desktop computer. If the world reverted to using dumphones, I wouldn't be bothered.

... but even I don't go anywhere without my phone. I could be in a car accident, or there may be an emergency.

Granted, we were all able to get around fine before we had mobile phones. But it was more difficult back then.

Well clearly I'm the weirdo here. When the heck did everything change? I don't think people were doing this 10 years ago?

I’m 47 I got my first phone around 2000 I think? Those early Nokias I wouldn’t take every where but I would say the last 15 years I’ve had a phone with me everywhere and if I forget it, it’s like I’ve lost a limb.

Fishingboatbobbingnight · 04/10/2025 17:32

I’m 61 live rurally. Haven’t been without my phone 24/7 for at least 15 years.

Well I hope that level of stupidity doesn’t come back to bite you on the arse one day.

This made me laugh rather more than it should have. 😆

Growlybear83 · 04/10/2025 17:34

I usually have my phone on me but rarely have a need to use it when I’m out. Very few people have my mobile number and I generally ask anyone who calls me when I’m out to ring back when I get home. I will never, ever be one of those people who are talking on their phones when they’re being served in a shop or cafe and rudely ignore the shop assistants. My husband rarely takes his phone out if we’re together because I’ve usually got mine in my bag. He’s only had a mobile phone for two or three years anyway and only got one when his mother was seriously ill and he needed to be accessible in emergencies.

shuggles · 04/10/2025 17:34

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:09

That sounds really weird, I hate carrying stuff. Don't usually lock the door so I don't have to take keys

Are you one of those people who leaves their car running when they go into a shop?

CantSleepEver · 04/10/2025 17:34

gamerchick · 04/10/2025 17:29

Knock it off with the wide eyed thing OP. Don't lock your door indeed. So edgy

She’s just making herself look ridiculous though.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 04/10/2025 17:34

Where I go it goes too.

JaneEyre40 · 04/10/2025 17:34

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:26

Clearly I am wrong, just curious why I'm different to the vast majority

You are not WRONG as people point out. You are an anomaly.

popcornandpotatoes · 04/10/2025 17:34

Yes of course they do. Many people use it for paying for stuff in shops. Most people take keys out too if no one else is at home. That's what bags and pockets exist for.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 04/10/2025 17:35

Love going out and leaving it behind - gives you a sense of freedom, no one can get at you for anything. Having said that I probably wouldn’t go out all day without it in case of an emergency

SupremeArbiter · 04/10/2025 17:35

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:22

I totally get why people like yourself would want to utilise such fantastic tech. I just don't understand how come most people seem to need it a lot, and I don't.

Obviously if you've got travel passes etc, you'll need it a lot, but not everywhere??

Did you read my post at all?

Figsaregood · 04/10/2025 17:36

No I don't take my phone everywhere. In fact I only take it out if it is needed for that particular trip. It is not needed on a walk for example. Like you I don't want to be tied to it or have the encumbrance of having to carry it around and look after it. I do wonder what some of these posters who are so tied to their phone would do if it broke down, was lost or stolen. Would they even know how to function?
I think it is a good discipline from time to time to rely on oneself. We used to do it all the time before the bloody things were invented.

user1476613140 · 04/10/2025 17:36

I also lock the door when in the house, that includes when I need to do a 💩.

Negroany · 04/10/2025 17:36

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:18

Ten years ago they weren't as useful. But I think I did carry it all the time then.

You keep going on about people "needing" it, but I don't need it, I just want it. Hoping I don't need it, but great if I do suddenly need it. Like if I get lost, breakdown in the car, feel ill, need to call 999, or decide to stop and buy something, or want to listen to some music, or someone contacts me etc. And obviously taking photos.

ThreePears · 04/10/2025 17:36

Taking it when you go for a walk in the countryside is very sensible if you ask me. You never know what might happen. I've known people who have had an accident while out and needed to call for emergency help. My neighbour tripped and fell down into a ditch, for instance, and broke her ankle.

My phone lives in my handbag, and my handbag goes where I go. Why would I go to the trouble of taking it out of my bag and leaving it at home when I go out?
Confused

Loveduppenguin · 04/10/2025 17:07

Yeah I go no where without my phone…

Me neither. Have teens (with autism) and aging relatives plus, having been in a car accident last year, would not have had a hope of getting help without out.

So, yeah, don’t go anywhere - other than the loo/shower - without it.

warmapplepies · 04/10/2025 17:37

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:22

Are you living in the 1950's?

No I know I'm a bit weird on the keys thing. Just hate having things clunking about in my pocket, especially if I'm going to the gym or something. I kinda figure if someone's gonna break in they will anyway. They're not gonna go and try my back door specifically, they have no idea which idiot has left it open! So if they're already round there, they've already decided to smash a window etc

So obvs no point in insurance!

When I didn’t have my phone right beside me I got raped and couldn’t call 999. HTH.

TheNightingalesStarling · 04/10/2025 17:38

Do you atleasthave car insurance?

Topseyt123 · 04/10/2025 17:38

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:27

Computer on desk

Desktop computers went out with the Ark, or was it the dinosaurs? 🤣

I have a laptop (Chromebook) because occasionally some things work on that better than on my phone, but it isn't used that often.

I'm 59, by the way. I was using a mobile phone for many things 10 years ago too.
