Surely you don't carry your phone everywhere?

Every time there's a discussion about civil liberties, for instance at the moment with ID cards, people always say, why are you worried they can track you by your phone anyway. But that implies that people are always carrying their phones.

I have a phone, I have to for work, and it's very useful outside work as well. I sometimes use it for navigation, and on certain instances I might take it with me if there's a chance I'll need to liaise with someone while out. Super helpful technology.

But surely people aren't taking it to the shops, or on the school run, or out for a walk in the countryside?

Yep, I use it instead of carrying a bag with credit cards and some of the smart watch stuff annoyingly requires GPS via the phone rather than it being built in as it used to be. Thank you Garmin for charging more and removing useful technology

Are you one of those people who leaves their car running when they go into a shop?

Actually no, that's odd, I would always lock the car (well van)

No I know I'm a bit weird on the keys thing. Just hate having things clunking about in my pocket, especially if I'm going to the gym or something. I kinda figure if someone's gonna break in they will anyway. They're not gonna go and try my back door specifically, they have no idea which idiot has left it open! So if they're already round there, they've already decided to smash a window etc

So obvs no point in insurance!

They very much will check the doors before smashing windows. What sort of fairy tale world are you living in?

Autonomouse · 04/10/2025 17:40

I don't know of anyone who doesn't carry their phone with them OP , every day, all day and night.
It's just part of the wardrobe, just as you wouldn't go around starkers, you wouldn't go out without your phone on.
For most, It's and multi-use tool, not just for making calls.
It's an issue with personal freedom and security though.
It's allowed the military to know where the enemy is, and anywhere you go you can be tracked by those who need or want to track you.

Mydadsbirthday · 04/10/2025 17:41

OP kindly it sounds like you're posting from the 1990s, referring to your chunky phone and it being useful technology!

My phone opens my car and pays for shopping so yes of course I need it with me at all times. I'm at the gym now and I need it to swipe in, and I'm playing a workout on it and I'll be using it to listen to an audiobook while on the treadmill.

DH will call me on it to ask what we should have for dinner shortly and my DD who is on a school trip will be messaging me on it soon I hope.

Really it's just part of how we live now isn't it?

Haribosweets · 04/10/2025 17:41

My phone is with me 24 / 7 regardless. I took it to the tip the other week, although I did leave it in the car when I was emptying the boot. Its my bank card, my diary, my whole life.

Darner · 04/10/2025 17:41

I take my phone everywhere 🤷‍♀️

I very rarely carry a bag, no longer use a wallet and my bank cards live in a drawer in the kitchen, but my phone goes everywhere with me.

You're an excellent wind-up merchant OP, I'll give you that.

That's really odd isn't it? They're after burning loads of fuel.

BeanQuisine · 04/10/2025 17:42

I take my phone with me to the GP and other appointments where I know there'll be waiting involved.

But I leave it at home for most other outings, unless I'm expecting an important call.

TotallyUnapologeticOmnivore · 04/10/2025 17:42

I usually take my phone with me when I go out, but obviously I leave it at home if I'm off to do something the government would not approve of.

That sounds really weird, I hate carrying stuff. Don't usually lock the door so I don't have to take keys

This can't be for real. That would invalidate your insurance for a start.

Of course most people take their phone everywhere/most places. Mine is with me 99% of the time.

What of someone comes in and steals your phone?

Do you atleasthave car insurance?

Yes, of course. At huge cost since I'm a delivery driver

I carry mine with me all the time. I remember one time I was walking and I came across a woman collapsed on the ground last year, no one else around. I was able to phone an ambulance for her. The paramedics looked at her phone to try and identify her.

She doesn't have insurance 😏

Haha I don’t lock my front door incase I lose my keys . I live in a flat now and haven’t locked my front door for years to the point where the landlord has locked me out one time coz he had a work man round and he locked my front door and I didn’t have my keys as they were at home 🤣🤣 so I was locked out all weekend til the office opened on the Monday morning . I had to tell the landlords son not to lock my door if he came and it was already open , he did look at me like 😲 when I explained ha .

and I used to leave my front door of my previous house open and my neighbours used to just throw my parcels into my hallway if I wasn’t home .

I am verrryyyy trusting I think 🤣

RanyaJerodung · 04/10/2025 17:44

Is there any reason that you don't lock your door?

Lollipop2025 · 04/10/2025 17:44

My phone has all my store cards like Tesco ect and has my bank card to pay.
Mu kids are always out and about and need lifts ect so I need to be contactable.
I don't use a handbag now because its all on my phone.
I can't wait for tech to get to a point where I can lock my house door with it and even start my car, that would be even better.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 04/10/2025 17:44

My MIL doesn’t take her phone when she’s walking her dogs or going for a bike ride. She does both of these things, completely alone in a giant forest. Makes my husband worry no end but she won’t take it as she doesn’t want to lose it Confused she’ll take it everywhere else though!

justasoul · 04/10/2025 17:44

Isn’t the back door the preferred method of entry for burglars, being out of sight from the road and all that?

Anyway, I have carried a phone on my most of the time since 1999. I live (semi)rurally near the coast, the coastguard or the air ambulance are around most days, how would call them if you needed help without a phone? Some places along the coast are v quiet and you might not get someone passing by for ages…

Also, quite lucky

MaurineWayBack · 04/10/2025 17:44

I have my phone with me most of the time.
It happened as I started to use it for everything. Music in the car, satnav, CC fur payments. I hardly use it as a phone or even for texts 😂😂

However, having it with me isn’t the same as being glued to it. I have no notifications on for example so can take hours to answer a text/message etc….

Having said that, re the issue of localisation and ID cards, this would be a nudge fir me to keep said phone st home?

Hoodlumboodlum · 04/10/2025 17:45

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:18

Well clearly I'm the weirdo here. When the heck did everything change? I don't think people were doing this 10 years ago?

Phones can do a lot more than they could 10 years ago and people use them a lot more. Things move on.

UpWhereTheyWalk · 04/10/2025 17:45

My grandad only turns his on when he needs to use it. Then turns it off till next time. He's 86

Everyone else I know has their phone always.
