Surely you don't carry your phone everywhere?

Every time there's a discussion about civil liberties, for instance at the moment with ID cards, people always say, why are you worried they can track you by your phone anyway. But that implies that people are always carrying their phones.

I have a phone, I have to for work, and it's very useful outside work as well. I sometimes use it for navigation, and on certain instances I might take it with me if there's a chance I'll need to liaise with someone while out. Super helpful technology.

But surely people aren't taking it to the shops, or on the school run, or out for a walk in the countryside?

You are the outlier OP. It’s usual to carry a mobile phone if you have one and leaving your door unlocked because you can’t be arsed carrying keys is weird

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:14

obviously I take it if there's a chance I'll need it, but outside of work that doesn't seem to be often

I’m on the toilet typing this response: yes, I do carry it everywhere.

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 04/10/2025 17:14

We need context. How old are you? Do you live rurally, semi-rural, urban, city?

I'd never leave my house unlocked and I always take my phone put with me everywhere because I live alone and in a big city. Payphones are few abd far between these days, so what if you needed to ring 999?

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:14

I'm 49

I live fairly centrally in a medium size town

That sounds really weird, I hate carrying stuff. Don't usually lock the door so I don't have to take keys

Let's hope no one breaks in and steals the phone you left behind!

I’d say that’s very unusual but it’s up to you. You’re definitely not the norm in this particular thing though.

That is a fair question, and yeah I'd be more prepared for an emergency with a phone. But I guess I'd be more prepared if I carried a first aid kit too!!

I think you’re unusual in this respect OP, I am slightly envious, I wish I was less attached to mine!

currently on it in the bath and I do indeed take it everywhere especially as it counts my steps

Bluevelvetsofa · 04/10/2025 17:17

If I’m at home, I don’t carry it into each room I’m in, but I know where it is. If I’m out, it’s in my bag, because it’s my method of payment.

SeaAndStars · 04/10/2025 17:17

I'm in my sixties and go for days without looking at my phone. Days really without turning it on. I probably only use it about once a week.
I know this is peculiar these days.

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:18

Well clearly I'm the weirdo here. When the heck did everything change? I don't think people were doing this 10 years ago?

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 04/10/2025 17:18

You are very unusual.

I use the trains in South London with mine. I use CityMapper to get around. I use the Nectar card app to collect points. I carry long distance train tickets on it. I order food on it. So many ways I use it.

riverofjordan · 04/10/2025 17:18

I would leave the house without anything BUT my phone! It's my keys, wallet, watch, camera, calendar, maps, shopping list, plus all kinds of other apps... To be honest why are we still calling them 'phones' as tho that's their main purpose 😂

And you don’t lock your door?!

Mangetouts · 04/10/2025 17:19

My phone is usually with me if I leave the house, for security. On the occasion I forget I can manage without it. I keep a separate card and can do everything else manually if I need to.

If the government starts to track us all people will find an alternative, you can bet on it!

TheNightingalesStarling · 04/10/2025 17:19

Shops... yes its useful
School run... I didn't when it was just across the road and I'm gone 5 mins, but did when it was a 20min drive
Walk in countryside... well since its on the advised "kit list" these days from Mountain rescue etc then yes

TheGreatWesternShrew · 04/10/2025 17:19

Yes obviously we take it everywhere with us… that way if someone calls we can answer. Otherwise humans would’ve stopped at landlines.

Silverstar2 · 04/10/2025 17:19

Well I'm diabetic so my blood sugar is on the Libre app on my phone so yes, it's with me all day - and night.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 04/10/2025 17:19

I pretty much do carry my smartphone everywhere yes. (I'm nearly 60.)

Most people I know do - well, my age and younger. Some people I know 65+ do too, but some of them don't even have a mobile phone. Let alone a smart phone.

I feel sorry for some of them, as they're being left behind, as so many things require you to have one now. You need an app for so many things. Even our GP Practice has an appointment booking system now where you can only book via the app. Ditto prescriptions.

They assume that anyone who doesn't have a smartphone has someone who can do it for them. A relative or friend or carer. Incorrect. Some people have no-one, and they have to go into the surgery and get one of the receptionists to do it for them. You can't even do it over the phone.

Bloody ludicrous. Hmm

Only the back

I was carrying my phone everywhere even when I had a 3310.

lock your door though, for insurance if nothing else.

I have a first aid kit in my car, and also in my bag so yes, I always have access to one of those too......
