They had a nice little political party - the oldest in modern history (quite happy to debate the classicists on the Roman classes). It had survived the fracture in the monarchy, the succession crises of the 17th and 18th century, seen off changes that ended in revolution all over Europe, infiltrated every corner of the globe by the British Empire. And yet it folded quicker than a cheap tent the second the avarice and greed of the monied classes got their sticky fingers on the levers of power.
No one forced them to pick up the poisoned chalice - many warned against (and Google remembers the MNetters who did, most under other names 😀). But no, they thought that rather than slay the dragon, they could use it's supernatural power to destroy their perceived enemies.
