Labour isn't working - Thread 10

TheNuthatch · 24/09/2025 11:33

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I wish the tories would get their act together too - I feel there are easy wins on reforms to actually help growth and business, there are policies on school diversity and incentivising people to invest in their children and not punish them for it that are there for the taking.

Rivalled · 24/09/2025 17:58

Although, I admit, we’re so far
away from another election it is a difficult gig opposing.

They can't. Not yet.
There is too much baggage there. It's too early for them to try and rehabilitate.

You must be right - it’s why some of the less discredited ones are keeping a lowish profile.

CaveMum · 24/09/2025 18:34

Welcome to the new posters! I’m relatively new myself so nice to see more fresh blood.

@MeanMrMustardSeed - Personally I like to listen to a cross section of podcasts across the political spectrum as I think it’s important not to end up in an echo chamber if you can help it. On my subscribe list are:

TRIP
TRIP US
Political Currency
Pod Save America
Pod Save the World

The latter two are very left leaning (US Democrats) but I actually find them informative, plus I can’t stand Trump so they add some context to what’s going on in the US.

I tried Pod Save the UK but oh my god it’s so left-wing - Jeremy Corbyn is the Messiah in their eyes!

I dip in and out of Newscast.

The Rest is Money is good for politics purely from an economic point of view.

Rivalled · 24/09/2025 18:57

He’s not the messiah he’s a very naughty boy!

it’s the same as my list @CaveMum I like pod save America too.

CaveMum · 24/09/2025 18:58

I have plenty of non-political podcast recommendations too!

Rivalled · 24/09/2025 19:00

I’m here for them - although I’m devoted to in our time, the life scientific and TRIH…

TheNuthatch · 24/09/2025 19:21

Not heard of in our time. What is it?

I am so behind with podcasts at the moment. Not enough hours in the day rn.

I’m hovering over the join button for Reform. Never thought I’d do it, but I do think something big needs to shift, and the Tories (I used to be a member) don’t have it in them. I’ve been keeping a watch over the last week or so and Reform’s membership numbers are increasing every day. They have a message up in red, saying at 309,000 they’ll beat Labour membership figures (that they got off the back of £3 membership fee!).

What radio / podcasts are you all listening to? I’ve gone over to Times radio in the last few weeks and I’m loving it. I couldn’t hack TRIP, as I was constantly flipping between hating the arrogance of Campbell or Stewart more. Such a tough contest. I’m also enjoying the Newscast podcast a lot.

Oh I love a podcast..my favourites are:
Triggernometry
Daily T
Not another one
Planet normal
Heretics
Brendan O'Neil
Peter McCormack
Spiked
Best of the spectator
What most people think

I have trouble sleeping!

I do like Ben Wallace

What do people think about Andy Burnham, will he go for the leadership bid?

Yeh I think he will spend conference shoring up support. I don't think he will make a direct challenge but will loiter ready to pounce when the time is right

Yep, agree with all of that. I would imagine Burnham will speak at some fringe events at conference to test the water.

I listen to the Spectators “Coffee House Shots” podcast daily. Short and sweet and not annoying!

I used to listen to this religiously every night as I went to bed. Think Douglas Murray got to me in the end. Might give it another go! Thanks

EmpressoftheMundane · 24/09/2025 20:35

Some other podcasts I like that might be new to you/ of interest:

Conversations with Coleman
Double Jeopardy
Good Fellows
The Peter Zeihan Podcast
IEA podcast

Reading a couple of articles it seems he’s being hoisted up the media flag pole. It looks like he’s a ‘I’ll do it if people want me’.

Then another article saying Reeves should just break the manifesto pledge on taxes from the IoD.

Politically damaging but they advise it. Perhaps Reeves and Starmer can just go, Burnham and other (not Rayner! Maybe Darren Jones) take over.

Possible?

I think Burnham’s policies sound even more nuts but I’d love to see Starmer / Reeves out.

Ha ha yeh like "I don't really want to but if everyone insists" like we are all idiots and he hasn't spent last 3 weeks orchestrating it?

TheNuthatch · 24/09/2025 21:30

Andy Burnham, Prime Minister - shudder.
I think people have forgotten how crap he was as a minister.

Where is Wes Streeting in all this? Surely he fancies the top job too. I bet Starmer is dreading conference this year 😂

Probably purging his old emails and tweets before he makes his move.
