Christmas decor you just don't like?

It's obviously all down to* *personal taste but..... which items of Christmas decor leave you feeling colder than the weather outside?
For me it's the Disney baubles/figurine things that hang on the tree! Putting a little red hat on Bambi doesn't make him festive, even worse when it's the whole collection and it looks like something that belongs in a nursery!
Thinking about it most Disney films seem to be set in the summer so maybe that's why they seem so wrong on a Christmas tree🤔
I did go through a phase of everything being silver/black and white (should give the Disney lovers something to cringe at on my behalf! ) but over the last few years I have added a bit more colour, obviously in a very tasteful almost still neutral way...
This thread is hopefully lighthearted, I am taking the piss out of myself and do not feel I need hate mail from the 'Disney Christmas Decoration Foundation'🤣

I’m also a hater of blue/cold white lights, but also find even nice colours are often too bright these days especially when flashing, they trigger migraines for me so it’s annoying as spend the whole of december wincing!

elliesmummy19 · 23/09/2025 21:15

The matchy matchy, all coordinated decorations.

I like all the tacky stuff and for my house to look like an explosion at the tacky Christmas decoration factory. Our tree is a mishmash of decorations we’ve collected over the years, from various places we’ve been, events in our life, and it looks tacky as fuck and I love it.

I'm not really a fan of those big bow things people sometimes put on their doors.

Reminds me of the coffins in Squid Games now.

Anything blue and cool white lights. Not remotely festive.

Yep me too. Especially blue tinsel.

DappledThings · 23/09/2025 21:16

Coordinated trees. Trees should have loads of random stuff accumulated over the years that doesn't match at all.

Trees without tinsel. Those are sad and naked trees.

Candy canes.

Decorations coming down before Twelfth Night.

I’ll agree with decorations coming down before twelfth night. Can’t understand why people are taking them down on Boxing Day - frankly if you’re not eating, drinking and being merry on Boxing Day then something’s gone wrong. It’s the day of eating Christmas chocolate and doing sod all else, not tidying the house.

Nutcrackers. It is the teeth. Just, why?

To crack nuts?!

Calliopespa · 23/09/2025 21:24

Focusispower · 23/09/2025 20:49

Yep. I knew there would be one person already who feels the same way as I do about tinsel. I do love some nostalgic naff 80s Christmas tat, but not tinsel!

Yes I'm anti-tinsel too.

I know I should find it fun, but it just always looks a bit tacky.

Middlemarch123 · 23/09/2025 21:24

Tinsel. Horrible stuff.

I like natural stuff, holly branches, luckily I have several holly trees in my garden. Seasonal flowers, a proper tree with hand crafted ornaments. Candles. That sort of thing.

What the actual F is a gonk? How is it Christmast? I feel like it's just appeared over the last few years.

Fuck yes. Couldn't agree more.

Calliopespa · 23/09/2025 21:27

incognitomouse · 23/09/2025 20:51

Oh man. I love it all. All of it, Tinsel, flashy coloured lights, gonks, candy canes. If my house doesn't look like Christmas exploded something is wrong. I've even gone back to my 80s roots with foil garlands.

But.

The baubles at M&S and John Lewis. Why do I want to hang an avocado or a sausage on my Christmas tree? What is festive about a custard cream?

Yeah the food theme is weird, unless it's gingerbread men or candy canes, possibly a Christmas pudding.

There is nothing festive about things like tins of baked beans or croissants.

I think most of those are Tomtens, which is a nordic Christmas elf, rather than gonks.

EchoedSilence · 23/09/2025 21:31

Wanky wooden scandi style decorations. Christmas is all about the sparkle and tinsel.

BeMellowAquaSquid · 23/09/2025 21:32

Those poxy giant door bows

Oh I like them! Clearly I'm wanky!

I think the sparkle is more form America and travelled across. Scandi countries have a more sedate colour scheme, and personally I like it. It suits the woodland feel of a Christmas tree.

Whereismyjoiedevivre · 23/09/2025 21:34

Most of it is really grim and tacky. Those overloaded ribboned Xmas trees and the front door bows 🤮

Hottchoc · 23/09/2025 21:35

Oh you'd hate my tree! Almost every decoration is Disney! With lots of big tacky Costco Disney items too!

I don't like nutcrackers or non green trees!

Walker1178 · 23/09/2025 21:36

How are there already 55 posts and no one has said lametta?!? It’s the absolute worst Christmas decoration ever

miserableandworried · 23/09/2025 21:36

CremeEggsForBreakfast · 23/09/2025 20:58

Oh! Wait! This. This I hate. And people keep sending photos of it to me because I normally love dinosaurs

wtf 😂😂

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/09/2025 21:36

Cold white lights
Blue lights
All flashing lights
Coloured tinsel
Artificial 🎄trees
Artificial front door wreaths
Any decorations put up too early, i.e. before 1st December, or the beginning of Advent , if that’s a bit earlier

When I was a child, people used to pin colourful foil doily cut-out things to the ceiling.

And paper chains and those collapsible paper decorations again pinned to the ceiling.
MMM nice combustible material pinned to polystyrene ceiling tiles.
70s style.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 23/09/2025 21:38

There was a trend a couple of years ago for upside down Christmas trees. Why? 🤯

Mew2 · 23/09/2025 21:38

Hatred of flashing lights here too. I get migraines, hubby has epilepsy.
I often send him to speak to managers at pubs etc to ask them to turn the flashing fairy lights off..... Don't understand why they are allowed- as they harm people .... You can't have nuts on planes in case someone has an allergy, but you can have flashing lights which could kill an epileptic.
And again lots of tinsel and beads in trees ...

From all I’ve seen of a Swedish friend’s decorations, they’re all red and white - no green at all. Personally I think green is essential.
