Christmas decor you just don't like?

It's obviously all down to* *personal taste but..... which items of Christmas decor leave you feeling colder than the weather outside?
For me it's the Disney baubles/figurine things that hang on the tree! Putting a little red hat on Bambi doesn't make him festive, even worse when it's the whole collection and it looks like something that belongs in a nursery!
Thinking about it most Disney films seem to be set in the summer so maybe that's why they seem so wrong on a Christmas tree🤔
I did go through a phase of everything being silver/black and white (should give the Disney lovers something to cringe at on my behalf! ) but over the last few years I have added a bit more colour, obviously in a very tasteful almost still neutral way...
This thread is hopefully lighthearted, I am taking the piss out of myself and do not feel I need hate mail from the 'Disney Christmas Decoration Foundation'🤣

What the actual F is a gonk? How is it Christmast? I feel like it's just appeared over the last few years.

Right with you on that, are they elves? Gnomes?!!

Carandache18 · 23/09/2025 22:02

Blue lights.
Anything that flashes, or does that icicle trickley thing.
Anything inflatable.
Anything that plays a tune.
Nearly everything imported on a container ship from China.

There was a trend a couple of years ago for upside down Christmas trees. Why? 🤯

Someone on here yesterday was saying they wouldn't be able to decorate the tree as they'd be too pregnant and the tree shape wouldn't let her near. I thought that must be where the trend for upside down trees started.

Maybe they deter cats too?

It’s this, I guess you could describe it as spaghetti timsel!

Oh this stuff should be destroyed (but that’s easier said than done)!!! When DH & got together 15+ yrs ago his Christmas decs contained a very nice artificial tree & this devil spawn & I am still vacuuming up miles of it every year!!🤣🤣 even when we don’t put it on the tree it’s the gift that keeps on giving.
& Elf on the shelf ewww just creepy🤣

Scandinavian wee dwarves/elves/gnomes/trolls. Tiny people with tall pointy hats usually red or green that come down to their noses, beard fromnose to floor.

I used to love putting lametta on the tree when I was little. It was a top job. I don't use it now but it was a lot of fun in the 70s when I was small.

Apparently it’s making a comeback! 😆🎉✨✨✨

Heartyredbeaker56 · 23/09/2025 22:09

Couldnt stop laughing at the last part - at first I though it was an edit that meant you had received hate mail from the ' Disney Christmas Decoration Foundation ' 😂

I hate it all. Its just tacky, dust collecting crap and I'm so glad that this year I can do away with absolutely all of it and stick to candles and some form of small, neat christmas tree that isn't a tree.

I'm not really a fan of those big bow things people sometimes put on their doors.

Yep, those and inflatables. I like everything else.

VenusClapTrap · 23/09/2025 22:13

I can get on board with most of it. I used to be very control freaky about colour schemes and tasteful restraint, but I’m more chilled out now. I draw the line at Elf on the Shelf though.

On and gift filled advent calendars - my kids have always had to make do with ye olde picture ones, because I have quite fixed ideas about advent being about looking forward; no gifts till Christmas Day here.

When I was a child, people used to pin colourful foil doily cut-out things to the ceiling.

I used to loathe these as a child. My dad died this year and I found them in a box. My whole house will be adorned this year!!!

They always remind me of only fools and horses.

My santa gonk is 35 years old this Christmas. He is an og gonk for the 90s

Chiefangel · 23/09/2025 22:17

Evil gonks. Garden centres must make a fortune.

Elf on the shelf - just awful. Evil looking little buggers.

Blue Christmas lights, oh lovely emergency response right in your house

And our stupid artificial tree that we got from John Lewis a million years ago that has to have every coloured coded branch inserted into the trunk and then sheds so much it clogs my hoover every Christmas and sets the holiday mood in a lovely fashion as myself and my husband then remember how fucking awful it is and how we wished we had bought a new one.

TwinklyNight · 23/09/2025 22:17

SeaAndStars · 23/09/2025 20:59

Christmas versions of household items - Mince pie patterned dustpan and brush, snowflake chopping board, elf washing up brush, kitten in Santa hat cushions, holly door mats or this toaster!

Either you have to store it all somewhere all year or it's Christmas every time you go in your kitchen.

Edited

I gave never seen anything like this before. I don't hate it.

They are from nordic folklore - dating back to the 18th century.

Calliopespa · 23/09/2025 22:18

I do enjoy a bit of festive toilet tissue.

I love mine. My partner bought them for me as a surprise. She bought me nutcrackers as well. 😁 🎄🎅

LillyPJ · 23/09/2025 22:21

Excessive outside lights, especially flashing and/or multi-coloured ones.

OwlIceCrem · 23/09/2025 22:22

That fucking demonic elf

I find it super un-Christmassy when people are judgmental of others - I love that some people go all out Disney, some people do monochrome, and others do an array of multicoloured tat. I do warm lights, red and gold throughout the house but now allow a Christmas tree of any tat the kids fancy in the play room (there is some Disney but the worst is an ice cream sundae with a unicorn coming out of it?) and the dining room tree is allowed to be a bit more multicoloured than the others. Embracing it all is definitely the way forward.

100% agree. It’s fantastic that so many celebrate and in their own way that makes them smile. I love it all!

StatuteofLiberty · 23/09/2025 22:25

Love lametta

Buxusmortus · 23/09/2025 22:26

Blue lights.

Any door wreath made of non-natural materials, in fact any fake foliage, flowers etc

Fake Christmas tree.

Huge bow on door.

Nutcracker figures.

Blow up Santa/snowman.

Outside lights in the shape of polar bear, deer etc.

Baubles/fake foliage etc all around the door.

Families wearing matching pyjamas.

Windows with fake snow sprayed on.

Resin Christmas scenes or figures that you can buy in the tat shelves of large garden centres.

ThatRareLimeFinch · 23/09/2025 22:28

apparently a lot when i think about it 😳😂

anything and everything that comes with a super colourful theme
themed trees
those god awful giant door bows
trees super overloaded with 'decor'
tinsel
glitter and shiny
feathers
and any lights that arent warm white

basically anything that isnt, a soft cosy neutral, white, deep red, deep green, natural wood. 😂

Ketzele · 23/09/2025 22:30

Having said I like it minimal, its worth adding that only applies to indoors. I quite like it when people go nuts in the garden, inflatable reindeer and all. Unfortunately I live in a Farrow and Ball enclave so its more holly wreaths round here. It gives me great delight that the only house that really goes large is one of the poshest homes in the area - a big detached house with formal gardens and stone Dobermans guarding the path. They have frolicking bambis, flashing Santas climbing the walls, elves riding the Dobermans etc.

ChannelingmyinnerMsRachel · 23/09/2025 22:32

Gonks I don't see people's obsession with them, every shop seems to sell some sort of Christmas gonk rubbish, they give me the creeps 😑
