A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Well- a not-unexpected e-mail. The tenant in my flat has given notice. She's in finance and has decided to jump ship before the budget. Returning to her home country. She said 'You will understand my reasoning..... '.

Yep.

Yep we all wish we could do the same!!

EasternStandard · 22/09/2025 11:14

Upstartled · 22/09/2025 10:22

Apparently we are going to give poor countries advice rather than aid because of budget cuts 😂😂

First lesson: tell them you are going to grow the economy while ushering in a slew of anti-business policies. You're welcome.

Advice! that’s nice. Maybe they can throw in an old pair of Labour freebie specs, I’m sure they’ll be pleased with advice not aid

JustStopItNorasaurus · 22/09/2025 11:16

That basically was what we used to pay much of the school fees. I've just sent an e-mail to school asking about what payment plans are available. Just in case we can't rent it or sell it I need to assume worst case scenario.

I completely understand why she's doing it. TBH we were going to sell my flat anyway 'eventually'. Just pushes it forwards most likely.

Yep.

Sorry to hear that.

Your risk will soon increase of course - credit risk, regulatory risk, operational risk, asset risk, fiscal risk etc etc.

Remaining a LL is not for the faint of heart, as you know, I am sure.

And now, we have falling asset values…

JustStopItNorasaurus · 22/09/2025 11:39

yes indeed.

I am not at all surprised though- a young dynamic professional who speaks 3 European languages and is in Finance? Not sure the UK will have much to offer her after November.

Rivalled · 22/09/2025 11:54

sorry to hear about your tenant, and the school fee issues @JustStopItNorasaurus Much sympathy.

Edited

Fingers crossed you can sort worst case scenario out with the school 🤞

JustStopItNorasaurus · 22/09/2025 12:03

Thanks. DH are I are going to sit down later and try and work out what to do. Reality is we can't pay fees with our remaining income. DS2 is on a part bursary. I knew it was insecure though so it's not an emotional earthquake as have been expecting it.

It’s good you have the option to sell. That might be an opportunity to do it earlier than you anticipated but perhaps for the best! We sold our btl earlier this year, was a relief tbh. We used an estate agent but it fell through once and then the second time was ok. Still took 5 -6 months though, in West London.

I think if we sold again I’d be tempted to use one of those firms that buy within days, no messing about. Obv you get a bit (10%??) less than you would with an EA, but the speed and less stress could be worth it.

Anyway good luck, it might be a blessing in the end!

GabrielsOboe · 22/09/2025 12:55

Asked about a claim that “most migrants” rely on benefits, Nigel Farage replied: “We are firmly of the belief, with research backing it up, that just over 50 per cent of those who are coming up as part of the Boriswave as part of indefinite leave to remain are not working, have not worked and in all probability will never, ever work.

“And by the way if you want to challenge what I’ve just said, ask the British Government for the numbers because we’ve trying for quite a long time and failed. Maybe with the might and power of the Financial Times you can get a straight answer.”

Ouch.

Sadly, accurate.

If you are young and mobile - why on earth would you stay to fund Labour’s fiscal largesse.

Upstartled · 22/09/2025 13:01

50% of migrants who are here haven't worked and won't work? That's a huge amount of worklessness. Is this a quirk of the Boriswave including a lot of Ukrainian children - who obviously won't be working - or is this specific to working aged adults and standard fare?

Upstartled · 22/09/2025 13:08

DH has always been a bit lazy with getting citizenship. He got indefinite leave to remain shorty after we were married - 23 years ago - and that's been fine. But I think it's quickly making its way onto the to-do list.

It's more a faff than anything off-putting, being a net contributor and having a first language of English anyway but if the test were making a decent cup of tea, I'd start packing now.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 22/09/2025 13:21

I'm an indefinite leave to remainer also.

Been here 25 years.

This day just gets better.

(I can't make a cup of tea either according to DH and all the colleagues in all the workplaces I have ever been in).

upseedaisee · 22/09/2025 13:27

@JustStopItNorasaurus Really sorry to hear that. My son had been planning to BTL, but changed his mind after Rayner came up with all the changes to renters rights. Hope you manage to sell quickly.

EasternStandard · 22/09/2025 13:32

@Upstartledand @JustStopItNorasaurusgood luck with the applications. I wonder how much of a bump this will bring rn for people moving to citizenship as it’s quite expensive.

We’ve just gone through citizenship and passports for the family for o/s. It was expensive and took a long time but plodding through it it does feel better afterwards. I did it due to knowing Labour would get in, just as back up!

Upstartled · 22/09/2025 13:36

Yeah, it's always been on the back burner. It's only DH so it's not too bad money wise. I think it's the thought of the ceremony and people clapping that has put him off the most.

twistyizzy · 22/09/2025 13:37

Officisl data for mumber of independent schools inspected by Ofsted. This will hit the SEND schools funded by taxpayer more than mainstream independent schools paid for by parents!

Some data. Though I haven’t read it only scanned.

It's probably because I'm full of cold today but I can't make much sense of all that information. It does look like there are high levels of unemployment among particular groups of migrants but doesn't go on to say what percent of the population those groups make up. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I'll try again when the paracetamol kicks in.

I’ve just been watching the stuff about the recognition of Palestine as a state. One thing I do hate is when politicians repeatedly say that they have been clear about <thing>. This isn’t just a Labour thing though - the Tories used to do it too. Yvette Cooper said it three times in the same sentence.
